You may choose a maximum of 4 sessions: (two 4 hour sessions, four 90 minute presentations, or a combination of all) CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS Jona Olsson Founder and Director of Cultural Bridges to Justice, Jona offers cultural diversity programs to fire departments, as well as regional and national conferences. Jona is a political activist and educator, delivering programs covering sexism, racism, homophobia and how to diversify within a department while creating an atmosphere of much needed trust. Jona has now retired from active duty as the Chief of Latir Volunteer Fire Department in New Mexico. Her time as Chief, as well as her education, travel, trade union membership, work in the arts, the trades, college faculty positions and continued social activism provide over 30 years of experience and rich background in justice education. Jennifer C. Pernfuss Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Windsor. Jennifer was called to the Ontario Bar in1994 and began her career focused exclusively on relationship issues and the prevention and elimination of workplace discrimination, harassment and conflict. She received extensive training in mediation and negotiation at Pepperdine University School of Law, Institute for Dispute Resolution in California; CDR Associatesʼ training in Mediating Employee Relations Disputes in Boulder, Colorado and has also received training in mediation from the University of Toronto and the University of Windsor. Jennifer also engaged in a course of self-study on inner and outer relationships based on the works of Thomas Moore, John O'Donohue, Parker Palmer, Clarissa Pinkola Estes and David Whyte. Jennifer shifted her focus a few years ago and trained as a Life and Leadership Coach at CTI and as an Organization and Relationship Systems Coach at the Center for Right Relationships. Jennifer has been retained by organizations in Canada and the United States as a facilitator, mediator, trainer, coach and consultant.
4 Dr. Tom Hales - Dr. Hales is a senior medical epidemiologist with the CDC NIOSH. He received his BA from Stanford University, his MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and his MPH from Univ of California Berkeley in epidemiology. He is board certified in internal medicine and occupational/environmental medicine. For the past 14 years he has been the Team Leader of the NIOSH Fire Fighter Program-Cardiovascular Component. For the past 12 years he has been a member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Service Occupational Safety, and serving on the IAFF Advisory Board for Hazmat and WMD training since As an emergency responder, he is a member of CDCʼs emergency response team he responded to the 2001 anthrax attacks in WDC, hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and the 2005 tsunami in Southeast Asia. He is the currently the Vice-Chair of ACOEM Public Safety Medicine Section and a member of the NIOSH research team studying the relationship between fire fighting and cancer. This presentation will be divided into two parts. The first part will review association of fire fighting and cancer and provide an update on the NIOSH fire Fighter cancer study with an emphasis on female cancers. The second presentation will review the risks to the pregnancy during fire fighting and review proposed guidelines from NFPA Paul Atkinson - Toronto Firefighter and Co-Chair Occupational Disease Committee OPFFA (Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association). Paul was instrumental in the fight for Presumptive Legislation as the WSIB committee chair and continues to assist and fight for firefighters suffering from Cancers and other occupational illness Skye Lorimer Skye graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Physical Education and was a Police Constable with Durham Regional Police for 15 years working in various capacities such as uniform patrol, community patrol, sexual response officer, scenes of crime officer and Forensic Identification. Skye has most recently been with the OFM for 7.5 years conducting investigations into the origin and cause of fires and explosions. Until April of this year, Skye was the only female fire investigator with the OFM. This 1.5 hour lecture will focus on the expectations of the fire service when extinguishing and overhauling the fire scene, preservation of evidence and the responsibilities of firefighters when providing notes and witness statements. Skye will provide an understanding of how this information, combined with OFM and Police responsibilities, will result in an accurate origin and cause conclusion. The presentation will include case studies and an opportunity for a question and answer period. HOT CLASSES: FORCIBLE ENTRY (4 hrs 8:00 or 13:00) Firefighter Laura Gutscher (Waterloo Fire Rescue) will lead this highly interactive session that will focus on using your set of irons to force open many doors you will encounter in residential structures. You will also be shown how to properly utilize a power saw to gain entry to higher security doors often found in commercial buildings. Firefighter Andrew Brassard (Milton Fire Department and co-owner of the Brotherhood of Instructors ) will be on hand to answer your technical questions about todayʼs fortified doors and the latest in lock designs. Firefighter Laura Gutscher - Laura Gutscher graduated with honours from the Pre-Service Firefighting Education and Training at Conestoga College in She was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in a Selected Area award (Top Gun award) from Conestoga College. Laura is a third class firefighter for Waterloo Fire Rescue. She has completed the forcible entry course through Brotherhood Instructors, which includes conventional forcible entry (inward/outward doors), gates and padlocks, throughthe-lock, and saw techniques.
5 POWER SAW ROOF VENTILATION (2 hrs 10:00 or 15:00) Acting Captain Karen Davey (Waterloo Fire Rescue) and Captain Stacey Hemstock (Kitchener Fire Department) will review the basics of ventilation and vent size-up, discuss how the type of structure and building construction affect ventilation, and offer hands-on experience using ventilation saws. Each firefighter will perform hands on at ventilation skill stations, including peaked-roof and flat roof operations. Students will be able to understand the importance of ventilation at structural fires, how ventilation operations are conducted at different types of structures, and the importance of coordinating horizontal and vertical ventilation; ongoing size-up during ventilation operations at structural fires; how different types of building construction affect ventilation operations; and how to safely access different areas of a fire building to conduct ventilation operations. Acting Capt Karen Davey Karen Davey studied Kinesiology in Waterloo from After graduation she was unsure of a career path and had heard about firefighting from a friend from hockey. Karen spent two years working on achieving her goal of being a firefighter and was hired with Waterloo Fire and Rescue in She is now in her 17 th year and an Acting Capt. Captain Stacey Hemstock - Stacey Hemstock a Captain on the Kitchener Fire Department. She has been a Captain for 3 years, and in the fire service for the past 13 years. Stacey is responsible for shift training with her crews on a daily basis. She is a level 2 Associate Instructor with the Ontario Fire College facilitating courses on Building Construction, Incident Command Theory and Practical Operations and specialty rescue. Stacey is currently the chair of the medical committee for the Kitchener Fire Department and oversees training and equipment. She was a Paramedic for 13 years and continues instructing Emergency Patient Care, Heart and Stroke CPR, defibrillation and is a ROC defibrillator instructor. Stacey enjoys the challenge of training and learning from her peers during each and every training exercise. HAZMAT FROM THE INSIDE OUT (2hrs 10:00 or 15:00) Firefighter Jessica Stephenson (Waterloo Fire Rescue) will lead this 2 hour introduction to Hazmat training. Participants will learn about all levels of PPE used during Hazmat incidents. Through Levels A,B,C, & D, they will learn what each level provides in terms of protection as well as when it is necessary to wear them. Each participant will then get the chance to don a fully encapsulating Level A suit with SCBA and try their hand a mitigating a leaking tanker truck scenario. Firefighter Jessica Stephenson - Jessica Stephenson is a graduate of the Pre-Service fire fighter program at Conestoga College. She has been with Waterloo Fire Rescue for 7 years, and has been a member of their local hazmat team as while as there provincial level 2 response team for 3 years. She is a certified Hazmat Technician. FIREFIGHTER SURVIVAL (4 hrs 8:00 or 13:00) Captain Esther Lakatos and Acting Capt Lisa Belanger (Vaughan Fire & Rescue) will lead and Acting Capt Claude Duval (Kingston Fire Department) will assist, a challenging four-hour firefighter survival course, designed to teach techniques of self survival and partner rescue. With such drills as: low-profile/wall breach, wire entanglement and ladder escape. Participants will gain experience and self-confidence in managing a Mayday in self-survival. Partner rescue is covered with many maneuvers in drags, lifts and carries as a working fire company. Drills are performed in full PPE and SCBA (SCBA provided on site). Esther Lakatos A 15-year veteran in the fire service, Esther is a Captain with Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service and is a Platoon Rope Rescue Technician. She has been an Associate instructor with the Ontario Fire College and is a Captain with Humber College in the Pre-Fire Service Program, respectively since Her extensive hands-on training has taken her to the Illinois Fire Service Institute and FDIC annually since Esther holds Canadian and World titles in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. She holds a Provincial Instructor certification in Firefighter Survival and Rescue from the Ontario Fire College.
6 Lisa Belanger A 21-year veteran in the fire service, Lisa is an Acting Captain for Vaughan Fire & Rescue Service and a Confined Space/Trench Technician. She has been a FDIC Hands-on Instructor in Firefighter Survival since 2006 and is a fire ground operations instructor for Durham College in the Pre-Fire Service Program. She has studied in the Officer program with the Illinois Fire Service Institute and has also instructed for the Ontario Fire College in the recruit firefighter course. Lisa holds Canadian and World titles in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. Claude Duval A 15-year veteran in the fire service, Claude is an Acting Captain for Kingston Fire & Rescue Service and a member of the technical rescue team. As a Provincial Instructor Trainer in Firefighter Survival & RIT and Associate Firefighting Instructor for the Ontario Fire College, he travels across the Province instructing. Claude has trained extensively at the Illinois Fire Service Institute in Firefighter Survival, Live Fire, and Rescue, and has 18 years experience as an adult educator, including 12 years in the Canadian Military.
