2 INSTRUCTIONS Read Carefully Below are the course descriptions, prerequisites and/or required equipment, if any, for the classes that are being offered at the 2018 North Idaho Emergency Services Academy. Class rosters will be filled as registrations are received. We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 Academy. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING REGISTRATION CONTACT Chief Larry Phone OR hauserfd@cda.twcbc.com; Curriculum Contact warrenm@kootenaifire.com COURSE TITLE COURSE DESCRIPTION PREREQUISITES AND/OR REQUIRED EQUIPMENT Engine Company Operations See Appendix A for course prerequisites. Capt. Bill Clifford This program is designed for firefighters/company officers who are primarily assigned to, or respond as a member of an Engine Company. The program offers firefighters an opportunity to either sharpen their current skills, or learn new and efficient skills for the important task of getting water on the fire. This program is an intensive hands on program, designed to expand the firefighters experience in Engine Company Operations in a live fire setting. ADVISORY: This training involves live fire and should only be attempted by students in good physical condition. Beards and/or facial hair (except mustaches) will not be allowed in live burns. See Appendix A for course prerequisites. Register: Max. Class Size: 24 students, 4 hrs. Fri, 8 hrs. Sat & 8 hrs. Sun Prerequisite: See appendix A for requirements. Proof of Worker s Comp coverage. Required equipment: Full protective equipment, SCBA, a spare SCBA bottle, and a hose rope/ tool/strap/or webbing. Essentials of Fire Fighting Lead instructors Kelvin Daniels Ray Hanson These modules will cover areas of hose, ladders, self-contained breathing apparatus, and personal protective equipment. The material covered in this program will assist the firefighter working toward their FFI practical skills in the areas of hoses, breathing apparatus, ladders, and personal protective equipment. An excellent hands on program that will be conducted in a limited live burn atmosphere. It will refresh firefighters on the basics if not participating in the certification program. Students will be placed in a variety of restricted and narrow passages while operating in zero visibility conditions. ADVISORY: This training is rigorous and should only be attempted by students in good physical condition. Beards and/or facial hair (except mustaches) will not be allowed in live burns. Register: Max. 3 Extrication Operations Level Capt. Bryon Smith This Idaho State class is designed meet NFPA 1670 Awareness and Operations level. It is structured with firefighter safety in mind. In this class students will be exposed to new vehicle construction and design. They will gain an understanding of vehicle Safety Restraint Systems and alternative fuel technology. We will discuss tool safety and usage. Students will learn to read the vehicle to determine mechanism of injury. Students will be shown the Crash Recovery System a computer program that gives the IC safety messages and cut-a-way views of vehicles. Each student will participate in cribbing of vehicles on their wheels, tops, and sides and on concrete barriers. Students will participate in a basic door pull, dash push and top removal. Register: Max. Class Size: 18 students, 4 hrs. Fri, 8 hrs. Sat & 8 hrs. Sun Prerequisite: Proof of Worker s Comp coverage Required equipment: Hard hat, ANSI Safety Glasses or Shield, Gloves and steel toed boots. Long sleeve shirts and protective pants or jump suit. Note: Students can be EMS only to attend this class. Fire Sprinklers & Alarms: What Firefighters Need to Know s Chief (Ret.) Jeff Welch Matthew Bishop, Sprinkler Technician Class Description: Upon completion of the class, participants will be able to identify the 5 various types of sprinkler systems and control valves. We will examine different ways systems are compromised and gain insight to reduce or minimize water damage to the occupancy during a non-fire event. Additionally, different types of fire alarm components, including smoke/heat detectors, notification appliances, and control panels will be reviewed. Zoned/addressable systems will be discussed and how each may have an impact on initial arriving companies and assignments. Insight obtained from this class will aid responding companies in decision making that is knowledge driven and best suited for the occupancy. 4 The Burden of Leadership s Capt. Justin Capaul Capt. Kaipo Kuehu The Burden of Leadership was put together to build a foundation for new Company Officers or Firefighters looking to promote in the next couple of years. There are two sides of a Company Officer, the Leadership side and the Management side. It takes the right leader to possess both traits to have a successful organization and a successful Company. This class shares what s worked for us, as well as learn about what s worked for others. The students will also leave the class with a list of expectations that they build, Company level training ideas, letter of recommendation templates, plus much more. Register: Max. Class Size 24 Students 8 hrs. Sun. Only Prerequisite: None Idaho State Fire Inspector Course Deputy Fire Marshals Jason Blubaum and Casey Strong Required training for all department officials who apply and enforce the provisions of the adopted International Fire Code pursuant to Idaho Code (6). Students will conduct analysis of the intent of fire codes and how to apply them in individual fire districts. How to use good judgment and discretion considering the District s capabilities, apparatus, terrain and access roads to apply the code fairly and equally. Students are encourage to bring their copy of the 2015 Edition of the International Fire Code and a laptop or tablet. Register: Max. Class Size: 24 students,4 hrs. Fri, 8 hrs. Sat & 8 hrs. Sun Prerequisite: None Rope Rescue Level I Lt. John Bartholomew Eng. Chad Whaley Rope Rescue I is a 20 hour class designed to give the student awareness and operations of rope rescue at the low angle. The student will be able to set up and perform operations to rescue victims in the types of situations. Student will become familiar with ropes and knots, anchor systems, rappel and ascending techniques, along with lowering and raising systems with patient packaging in a litter. Register: Max. Sun Prerequisite: Proof of Workers Comp coverage or equivalent Required equipment: Hard Hat (i.e. Wildland) w/chin strap, Leather Gloves, Leather type Work Boots, Safety Glasses. 5 EMS Continuing Education Lectures EMS Chief Chris Way Dr. Gordy Luther Life Flight Lectures to include cardiac emergencies, patient advocacy, Narcan, obstetrical emergencies, mass casualty and a class on landing zones. The landing zone class will be instructed by Life Flight personnel; approach, packaging, LZ prep, etc. The lectures qualify as continuing education. Register: Max. Class Size 24 Students 4 hrs. Prerequisites: EMT-B license (min) S-215 Wildland Urban Interface Scott Hayes, Warden Mica Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVOC) Chief Rohrwasser This is an instructor-led course to be presented at the local level. Instructional units include firefighter safety in the interface, managing human factors in the interface, pre-incident planning, size-up and initial strategy, structure triage, structure protection overview, tactics in the interface, tactical operations and resource use in the interface, action assessment, plan update and after action review. Register: Max. Class Size: 24 students, 4 hrs. Fri, 8 hrs. Sat & 8 hrs. Sun Participants in this course will have the opportunity to gain and/or verify a broad range of competencies associated with driving emergency vehicles. These competencies include basic understanding of emergency vehicle operations as well as the skills necessary for practical operation. The course is designed to present the necessary classroom experiences and competency course training. This course will consist of classroom Friday night and Saturday morning, after that students will be given a scheduled time to drive the competency course. Saturday and Sunday times will depend on the time for the student s driving the course, students will complete at various times. Register: Prerequisite: None Prerequisite: Paid or Volunteer EMT or FF w/proof of Workers Comp coverage or waiver and a valid Driver s License. Students are encouraged to bring a dept. vehicle but it is not required Boot Camp for BC s Chief Warren Merritt Max. Class Size 18, 4 hrs. Friday, 8 hrs. Sat. & 8 hrs. Sun. (depending on course time) If you are a new or aspiring battalion chief this class is for you. The course will cover leadership, accountability, courageous conversations; the role of the Battalion Chief is addressing challenging behavior, mentoring and the importance of carrying the heavy water for the agency; Mission, Purpose and Message. 6 Managing the Mayday BC Rick Clutter & Engineer Brett Lynch Imagine for a minute that you re a chief or company officers; perhaps you already are. If a mayday was called while you were commanding a fire, what would you do? What specific steps are you going to take, what order are you going to take them in and why? This course will provide steps to be taken when a firefighter on the fire ground make the ultimate call for help. Register: Max. Class Size 24, 8 hrs. Saturday Prerequisites: None FST IFSAC Evaluator Training Scot McGuire Testing Coordinator, FST This is the course required for certification as an IFSAC evaluator for certification skills testing. It also counts as a refresher course for existing evaluators, Idaho is in need of more evaluators, and we are ramping up the numbers of skills tests in the State and are constantly seeking new, qualified evaluators in all districts. We are committed to planning, organizing, and producing a Fire Academy, which offers a wide range of in-depth academic and practical hands-on classes for the firefighters of North Idaho and beyond. We strive to create a learning environment, which challenges each participant mentally and physically. At the end of the Academy, the individual will be better equipped to SAFELY serve and protect their community. For this reason, the members of the North Idaho Fire Chiefs Association offers Academy Scholarships to assist departments and individuals interested in attending the NIFCs Fire Academy.
