FLOOD FIRE MARSHAL FIREFIGHTER / EMT / PARAMEDIC Starting Salary Paramedic $58, EMT- $ 55, The West Haven Fire Department will be conducting an Entry Exam on Saturday May 16, 2015 at 9:00am. This exam will be for entry level Firefighter/Paramedic/EMT. This is a Fire Police Selection Inc. (FPSI) exam. The fee for this exam is $91.00 and shall be submitted on line with the application and certification documents. Application documents and fee must be submitted through FirefighterApp.com. Application deadline is May 4, Qualifications to sit for the exam: 18 years of age (by date of the exam) United States Citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S Qualifications for employment: State of CT Certification for EMT/Paramedic (points) Passing score on Written Exam Passing score on Oral Exam (Pass/Fail) Physical Agility Exam (Pass/Fail) Medical Examination (Pass/Fail) High School Diploma/GED Extensive Background check (Pass Fail) Psychological Exam Fire (Pass/Fail) Valid Driver s License (CT) Completion of the Firefighter Recruit Academy (Pass/Fail) One year Probationary period upon date of Graduation (Pass/Fail) The West Haven Fire Department is a progressive Class II Department providing fire suppression, fire rescue, hazardous materials intervention/protection, emergency medical care and mutual aid, responding to more than 6000 calls per year. The WHFD/ Center District has four twelve-person platoons, which rotate four 24/72 hour shifts. 2 Dear Applicant: The testing process is comprised of the following components, Fire & Police Selection, Inc. (FPSI) National Fire Select Test (written), agility test, oral exam, an extensive background check and a physical/psychological exam. All candidates who possess the minimum qualifications and comply with the application process are eligible to take the written test. The test location, directions, instructions and study material may be obtained from FirefighterApp.com On Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 9:00 am, the West Haven Fire Department will conduct an entry level written examination for "Grade C" Fire Fighter at West Haven High School, 1 Circle St West Haven Ct The Agility Exam will be conducted on Saturday May 30, 2015 at the New Haven Regional Fire Academy on 230 Ella T. Grasso Blvd. New Haven Ct. Candidates with the highest written scores from the firefighter entry exam (including bonus points if applicable) will be invited to take the agility exam. Thirty (30) candidates will be invited to the Agility exam in the initial hiring cycle. The Oral Exams will be conducted on Thursday June 4 th and 5 th at the New Haven Regional Fire Academy 230 Ella T. Grasso Blvd. New Haven Ct. the top fifteen (15) candidates will be invited to the Oral Exam. The West Haven Fire Department intends to place four (4) candidates in the New Haven Fire Department Fire Recruit Class scheduled to begin in late June or early July of 2015 at the New Haven Regional Fire Academy 230 Ella T. Grasso Blvd. New Haven Ct. Candidates offered a Conditional Offer of Employment must be available to attend this class in the initial hiring cycle. The testing agency shall determine the pass/fail grade based on the results of the entire candidate testing pool. Once the testing agency has determined the pass/fail cut off point candidates that pass the exam will be notified. Candidates that fall below the pass/fail cutoff point will be notified by . Candidates entitled to "Bonus Points" will have those points added to their FPSI National Firefighter Entry Test score to determine a preliminary eligibility lists. The Board of Fire Commissioners reserve the right to make job offerings based on Department needs as it relates to the Emergency Medical Services division and the Paramedic needs of the Department. All appointments will be done in this manner for the life of the list. The hiring list will be formulated for successful candidates and will expire two years from the official date of the list(s) set by the Board of Fire Commissioners. In the event that the Recruit Firefighter Fire Academy curriculum available at the time of the appointment includes an EMT Certification component, a candidate who does not already possess his/her EMT Certification and who is on the list will be considered for possible appointment. In the event that the Recruit Firefighter Fire Academy curriculum available at the time of appointment does not include an EMT Certification component a candidate who does not already possess his/her EMT Certification and who is on the list will not be considered for possible appointment at the time but will remain on the list.

3 The department shall select the candidates from the final eligibility list to fill open positions. The selected candidate will undergo an extensive background check and a physical exam. The selected candidate(s) will be required to undergo and satisfactorily complete, in the sole discretion of the district, an extensive background check and a pre-employment medical examination The remaining candidates who have not been selected for the agility test will be placed on a waiting list according to their scoring and will be notified if the department conducts additional agility testing prior to the expiration date of the list. Applicants must present proper identification (valid driver's license or photo identification) and the Confirmation Receipt in order to be admitted to the exam. Box 207 West Haven, Connecticut The West Haven Fire Department Board of Fire Commissioners Announces: Open competitive examination for Grade C Fire Fighter Starting Salary Paramedic $58, EMT-D $55, APPLICATIONS: Applications must be submitted on FirefighterApp.com after April 13, 2015 a non-refundable payment of $91.00 and photocopies of all certifications and licenses requested by the Call of Exam and Application shall be submitted to Firefighter App.com Applications must be submitted no later than May 4, 2015 GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs firefighting work of ordinary difficulty and assumes responsibility in the prevention, combating, confining, and extinguishing of fires. The candidate shall perform the delivery of Emergency Medical Services. Perform search and rescue work; protect exposures; overhaul; ventilates and does salvage work as it relates to the fire service. Makes inspections of buildings as it relates to pre planning; must be certified in the use and wearing of self contained breathing apparatus; capable of performing all requirements of NFPA 1001; and able to function at the Hazmat Operational Level. Operates fire department equipment and pumps; responds to emergencies; drives various types of apparatus; performs hose and ladder work; attends classes and evolutions as they relate to the fire service; performs fire prevention and public fire education work; maintains apparatus and stations in a clean, orderly fashion by performing normal maintenance, doing building repairs, and painting as ordered to keep buildings and equipment in good repair; performs life saving and life sustaining techniques and victim extrication for the general public as emergencies may demand; does house watch duty; does related work as required; works a rotating shift including days, nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Candidate must be capable of performing all requirements of National Fire Protection Association Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications SUPERVISION RECEIVED; The candidate shall work under the direct supervision of an officer or other designated superior. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Certifications: (All current at time of Employment Offering) (Send clear copies with Application) High School Diploma or State of Connecticut Certified Equivalency or Equal to G.E.D. from another State. State of Connecticut Emergency Medical Technician Certification State of Connecticut and National Paramedic Certification. National Paramedic/EMT Registry for out of state candidates. Maintain a Valid Connecticut Driver's License. DD 214 (if claiming Veteran points) Must be eighteen years of age by date of exam.

5 Knowledge, skill and ability: Possess good social skills and general intelligence; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn fire prevention and fire fighting procedures; ability to comprehend fire prevention codes and ordinances. Ability to think quickly and effectively in emergencies; good mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; must be able to learn to drive trucks in the 10,000 to 60,000 pound range and obtain a Class 2(Q), State of Connecticut operator s license, before completion of probationary period; following satisfactory completion and graduation from the fire training school the date of the probationary period will be established by the department All employees must maintain a Paramedic, EMT Certification and local Medical Control for the duration of employment with the WHFD. No appointment to the position of fire fighter shall be deemed final and permanent until after expiration of one year of successful probationary service. CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the checking of references and facts in the application, a thorough character investigation of each candidate will be made before the names are certified for appointment. Candidates who do not have a good character rating or persons who have a felony criminal record or who have been dishonorably discharged from any police department, fire department, or armed forces are ineligible. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have reached their eighteenth (18) birthday by the date of exam; good physical condition with weight in proportion to height to include a physical fitness profile that meets the following a) Candidates shall meet the Wellness Standards as per the Union Contract. b) Applicants must have considerable agility and endurance. c) Applicants will submit to a medical exam, the scope and contents to be determined by the West Haven Fire Department, immediately before appointment. d) Applicants must not smoke tobacco or use any other tobacco substance, on or off duty during the tenure of their employment. e) Applicants must agree that they will not participate in the purchase, usage, or sale of any illegal drugs or narcotics during the tenure of employment. 6 POINTS FOR CANDIDATES: Points for candidates shall be awarded in the following manner, provided the candidate achieves a passing grade on the FPSI National Firefighter Select Test. West Haven Fire Department Center District Volunteer Firefighters must be in good standing for one year prior to the date of written exam. Paramedic candidates shall receive points based on their paramedic certification and firefighting certification if applicable. EMT's candidates shall receive points based on their EMT certification and firefighting certification if applicable. All points are final upon the certification of the candidate lists by the Board of Fire Commissioners. Additional points will not be added after this date. Total points claimed shall not exceed 15. a) Paramedic 12 points b) Certified State of CT.
