3 Scholarships and Awards at Sedbergh School INTRODUCTION This brochure provides some introductory information on specific requirements and the assessment process. Application forms are enclosed: please contact the School office if you require additional copies. AWARDS Awards may be offered to candidates who display excellence in any of the following fields: Academic Music Art Design & Technology Drama Sport All-Rounder Awards are offered for entry at Years 9, 10 and 12. Candidates who offer two or more fields of excellence other than Academic will be automatically considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, although a discipline-specific Award may still be made on the strength of any single component. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are the highest Awards, granted at the Headmaster s discretion to those displaying excellence in the assessments, and may be up to the value of half of the fees and index-linked. MINOR SCHOLARSHIPS Minor Scholarships may be awarded to candidates who are close to Scholarship level. BURSARIES All Awards for entry to Sedbergh School at Year 9 and above may be supplemented by a Bursary Award, based upon the financial circumstances of the candidate s parents. Bursaries are not part of the Scholarship process but may be applied for by contacting the Bursar s office. SEDBERGH SCHOOL 01

4 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Year 9 and 10 Entry The award of an Academic Scholarship is made, in most cases, upon either the candidate s performance in the Common Academic Scholarship papers set by The Independent Schools Examination Board, from whom past papers may be obtained, or in other papers as specified by the School Year 9 and 10 Assessment Candidates will be required to sit the following papers: English Mathematics Biology Chemistry Physics French (listening, speaking and writing) Geography History Religious Studies Candidates may also offer Latin, Greek, German and Spanish. Year 12 Entry (Sixth Form) Scholarship examinations will comprise three one-hour papers, one of which will be a General Paper, the others being in subjects of the candidate s choice. 5 MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS A Scholarship may include one period of free tuition per week in two instruments and a Minor Scholarship may include one period of free tuition per week in one instrument. The minimum standard of performance expected is Grade V of the Associated Board for Year 9 and 10 candidates, although a higher standard is expected for those candidates at Sixth Form entry level. However, evidence of talent and promise of development is of more importance than actual examinations passed. Candidates may offer a second instrument. Singing may be offered and candidates should prepare and sing one song; they will also be asked to sing at sight. Non-specialist singers are encouraged to offer singing and should bring one song. Original composition may be offered and should be submitted in advance. The audition will last approximately 45 minutes and comprise: a) the performance of two contrasting pieces on each instrument, or the voice for specialist singers b) sight reading tests c) aural tests, to include sight-singing Candidates will be interviewed by the Director of Music. 6 Candidates entering for the following Scholarships will also be required to sit a Verbal Reasoning paper (Yr9/10) or a General Paper (Yr12) ART SCHOLARSHIPS Art Scholarships are awarded for outstanding performance in the visual arts. Candidates should bring a portfolio of artwork, which may include paintings and drawings, done from observation and imagination. Other work, such as prints, photographs, ceramics and sculpture, will be very welcome. A candidate may be a specialist in any area of art. Candidates portfolios will be discussed at interview with the Director of Art. As a practical assessment candidates will be required to draw from still life. DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS Design & Technology Scholarships are awarded for capability and potential in Design Technology, particularly in the fields of Resistant Materials and Computer Aided Design. There is a written paper based on: a) theory of materials/processes b) graphic work c) a short practical design task All candidates should bring a portfolio of work to include evidence of drawing ability, use of DTP or CAD and photographs of objects that they have designed and made. Candidates portfolios will be discussed at interview with the Director of Design and Technology during which they will be expected to demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of the design process. Where possible candidates are encouraged to bring examples of their practical work. 04 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

7 DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS Drama Scholarships are awarded to outstanding candidates, performers who demonstrate creative thinking and the ability to communicate innovative ideas and enthusiasm for the discipline. For the practical assessment candidates will need to prepare a short piece of their choice of no more than three minutes duration to be performed to an audience. There will also be an extended period of ensemble work. An interview with the Director of Drama will concentrate on: a) theory and subject knowledge b) play text analysis c) evaluation of a live performance seen by the candidate d) performance experience Candidates should bring a portfolio of work to include any relevant qualifications gained e.g. LAMDA examinations and evidence of their involvement within productions to indicate their depth and range of experience within the Dramatic Arts. Candidates portfolios will be discussed at interview. SEDBERGH SCHOOL 05

8 SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS Sport Scholarships are awarded to those displaying exceptional talent and potential in one or more sporting disciplines. Candidates will be expected to furnish evidence of achievement to date and supporting documentary testimonials from teachers or coaches at School and Club levels. Candidates will be undergo a practical assessment of ability in at least one of the major team sports of Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Shooting. Candidates may offer more than one sport, but on the application form should indicate clearly the rank order in which they wish to be assessed. It is usual that only two sports are assessed. Candidates will be interviewed by a Director of Sport. 06 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

9 ALL-ROUNDER SCHOLARSHIPS All-Rounder Scholarships are awarded to those who show potential as leaders and whose all-round attributes will ensure that they make a major contribution to the life of the School. The Wavell-Wakefield Scholarship, named after the esteemed Old Sedberghian Sir William Wavell-Wakefield, may be awarded to the most exceptional All-Rounder candidate. Each candidate will be required to undertake: a) a series of interviews b) assessment in two or more skills from Art, Design & Technology, Drama, Music or Sport Candidates are expected to be close to Scholarship potential in all of the separate disciplines offered. 10 AGE RESTRICTIONS Candidates for entry into Year 9 should be over 12.6 and under 14.0 years of age on 1st June in the academic year of the Examination. DATES FOR ASSESSMENTS Assessments take place in November and from the end of January to March in the academic year preceding September entry, depending on dates set by The Independent Schools Examination Board. Please note dates for Yr9 (Academic) and Yr9 (Music) are those published by ISEB and MMMA respectively. 08 SEDBERGH SCHOOL

11 CONDITIONS 1. Candidates will be required to satisfy the ordinary Entrance requirements of the School. At Year 9 there must be a satisfactory performance in either the Academic Scholarship or Common Entrance Examination or the School s own Entrance Examination. At Year 12 a successful candidate needs to have a minimum of five GCSE passes at Grade C or above. 2. No candidate who has already won an Award or is awaiting the results from another school, may compete at Sedbergh without first producing evidence of leave from that school to do so. 3. All Scholarships are tenable on condition that the Headmaster is satisfied with the holder s good conduct and industry. 4. There will be a formal, annual review of each Scholar s performance and behaviour. In accordance with the Scheme of Management, Scholarships may be withdrawn should the Scholar not meet the expected standards. 5. It is expected that holders of Scholarships will remain at Sedbergh School until the completion of their A-level courses at the end of the Upper Sixth Form year. Exceptional reasons for withdrawal must be brought to the Headmaster s attention at the earliest opportunity; and such withdrawal may result in the repayment of an Award. 6. The Headmaster will allocate Scholars to a House. He will consider, where possible, the wishes of parents expressing an order of preference on the Registration Form. 7. The Headmaster reserves the right to increase or reduce the number and/or value of the Awards. 8. In assessing Scholarship candidates, definite allowance will be made for age. 9. If the ISEB Common Scholarship is taken, the cost incurred will be borne by the candidate. 10. Music Scholars will be expected to play a full part in the musical life of the School, throughout their time at Sedbergh. This may involve taking part in orchestras, bands, the choir and Choral Society. SEDBERGH SCHOOL 09
