SCHOLARSHIPS, EXHIBITIONS & AWARDS Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards reward excellence based on performance at assessment. They normally constitute a modest discount on the full fee either for a set period of time or for the entire duration of a pupil s time at the Royal Hospital School. The Award in some cases may be Honorary, whereby the recipient gains the accolade of being a scholar but no monetary discount is given. This is normally the case when a pupil is in receipt of another substantial discount such as the MOD Continuity of Education Allowance or a Greenwich Hospital Bursary. For further information about any of the Scholarships & Awards mentioned, please contact the Admissions Office: t: / 136 e: admissions@royalhospitalschool.org w: ROYAL HOSPITAL SCHOOL BURSARIES Candidates in receipt of a Scholarship, Exhibition or Award may be eligible to apply for additional assistance by way of a means-tested Royal Hospital School Bursary should the financial circumstances of the family necessitate it. Bursaries may be awarded in the form of discounts on the boarding or day fee, depending on the financial circumstances of the applicants and subject to the School s budgetary constraints. GREENWICH HOSPITAL BURSARIES Greenwich Hospital Bursaries are awarded to the children of serving and retired Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and sometimes to those with certain other seafaring connections. The eligibility criteria and application forms for Greenwich Hospital Bursaries are available from Greenwich Hospital through the Admissions Office. The number of Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards awarded are at the discretion of the Headmaster and subject to the School s budgetary constraints. All Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards may be subject to review. 3 3

3 ACADEMIC EXHIBITION (YEARS 7 & 8) To reward and acknowledge excellent performance on the Entrance Assessment Day and academic merit at the end of Key Stage 2 and provide a programme to support the development of individual excellence and high performance. ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP (YEARS 9 13) To reward and acknowledge academic merit and provide the scholar with a programme to promote intellectual curiosity and academic leadership whilst encouraging independence of mind and self-reliance; and provide a programme to support the development of individual excellence and high performance. 10% of the fees for two years (until the end of Year 8) Entry at Year 7 (11+) Entry at Year 9 and Year 12 Entrance assessment, interview and reference from current school. Performance in the Entrance Assessment, GCSEs or Common Application deadline: 8 December 2017 Entrance / Scholarship, an interview and a reference from current school. 4 MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP (YEAR 7 13) To reward and acknowledge musical ability and provide a programme to support the development of individual excellence. Up to 50% of the fees Entry into Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12 Completion of an Application Form detailing musical achievements, instruments played (at least two, which may include voice), grades (at least Grade 4 for Completion of an Application Form detailing sailing achievements, Year 7 entrants, Grade 6 for Year 9 entrants, and Grade 7 for Year 12 entrants, in one RYA levels and race experience instrument) and performance experience A practical assessment An assessment by audition involving two contrasting pieces on first instrument and Reference from current coach or club one on second, a sight reading test on main instrument and a selection of aural An interview with the Director of Sailing exercises 6 An interview with the Director of Music Internal candidates: 7 Internal candidates: Demonstrate talent and commitment to music as recommended by the Director of Music. To make a full and active contribution to musical life at the School by participating in the orchestra, band, choir or other musical group according to specialisation. There is an expectation that a scholar will be fully involved with at least two ensembles. Assessment date (external candidates): 27 January 2018 SAILING SCHOLARSHIP (YEARS 7 13) 6 7 To reward and acknowledge sailing ability and provide a programme to support the development of individual excellence. Up to 50% of the fees Entry into Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12 Demonstrate talent and commitment to sailing as recommended by the Director of Sailing. To commit to sailing as main sport for all three terms in Years 9 to 13 or at least the Michaelmas and Summer Terms in Years 7 and 8 To have the motivation and aspiration to perform at the highest level and become a role model in terms of attitude, diligence and performance To compete at key regattas and team racing competitions held on weekends during the year (normally five per year) To contribute towards the development of sailing in the Lower School DEADLINE: Recommended by the Director of Sailing on entry into Year 9 / 12. 5 TALENT AWARD (YEARS 7 & 8) To reward and acknowledge co-curricular ability and potential including sport, art, design & technology, drama, music or sailing. 10% of the fees for two years (until the end of Year 8) Entry at Year 7 (11+) Completion of an Application Form detailing all co-curricular achievements, performance at RHS Taster Days and a portfolio of work where appropriate. Selection will also be subject to a reference from current teacher, coach or club and an interview. Application deadline: 8 December 2017 Assessment: 27 January 2018 To be committed to sport at the Royal Hospital School and have the motivation and aspiration to perform at the highest level. To become a role model in terms of attitude, diligence and performance and contribute to the development of sport in the Lower School. Application deadline: 8 December 2017 Assessment: Year 9: 16 January 2018, 9am 2.30pm Year 12: By arrangement ART AND DESIGN SCHOLARSHIPS (YEARS 9 13) To reward and acknowledge ability and provide a mentoring programme to support the development of individual excellence. Reference from current coach or club An interview with Director of Sport and Head of Sport. Take a relevant subject at GCSE and/or A Level. 6 DRAMA SCHOLARSHIP (YEARS 9 13) To reward and acknowledge ability and provide a mentoring programme to support the development of individual excellence. Entry into Year 9 and Year 12 Completion of an Application Form detailing drama experience A practical assessment involving the performance of a monologue of the candidate s own choice and a group exercise A reference from current teacher or mentor Completion of an Application Form detailing all co-curricular achievements and An interview with the Head of Drama a portfolio of work where appropriate 10 Performance in the Entrance Assessment, Common Entrance or GCSE 11 Internal candidates: Demonstrate talent and commitment as recommended by Head of Department. Take GCSE Drama and make a contribution to drama at the Royal Hospital School including school performances. Recommended by Head of Department on entry into Year 9 / 12. External candidate assessment date: 27 January 2018 ALL-ROUND AWARD (YEARS 7 13) To reward and acknowledge good academic and co-curricular ability and the potential to thrive at RHS. The All-Round Award is not a scholarship but an Award that recognises pupils with good academic and co-curricular ability but who may not be at quite the level for a scholarship. 10% of the fees External candidates for entry into Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12 Internal candidates for entry into Year 12 only Practical assessment as detailed for the appropriate co-curricular scholarship assessment A reference from current teacher, coach or mentor An interview Internal candidates: Demonstrate academic ability and commitment to co-curricular life. 7 REMOVAL OF AN AWARD OR BURSARY The Headmaster has the discretion to reduce or withdraw a Scholarship, Exhibition, Award or Bursary, not only where a pupil s progress, attitude or behaviour has been unsatisfactory but also where the parents/guardians have failed to support the School, for example by the late payment of any contribution they are making to the fees. CONFIDENTIALITY The School respects the confidentiality of Awards and Bursaries made to families and recipients are expected to do likewise. OTHER SOURCES OF ASSISTANCE In addition to Greenwich Hospital and Royal Hospital School bursaries, there are a number of educational and charitable trusts which provide assistance with tuition fees. In the majority of cases, these are to assist children who are already attending a fee-paying school and, due to a change of circumstances, may be unable to remain. The Royal Hospital School encourages parents/guardians to apply for support where it is felt a good case can be made for assistance.
