1 Dear Fine Arts Scholarship Candidate: We welcome your interest in the fine arts at Cornell College. Excellence and meaningful performance opportunities in the fine arts are longstanding traditions at Cornell. Our faculty are active artists as well as outstanding teachers. Underscoring the value placed on the fine arts, the college has recently invested $16.3 million in its performance and classroom facilities. While all students are encouraged to participate in the fine arts at Cornell, students with special talents and interests are recognized each year through scholarships and awards in art, music, and theatre. Scholarships and awards in the fine arts range in value from $2,500 to $20,000 per year. Awards with a value of up to $5,000 per year may be combined with another Cornell scholarship (not in the fine arts) for which a student may be selected. Non-majors as well as student s planning to major in one of the fine arts are encouraged to apply for a scholarship, all of which are renewable throughout the student s four-year degree plan at Cornell. George F. Buzza Awards are valued at $5,000 per year. These scholarships are automatically renewed as long as a student maintains a cumulative 2.75 GPA at Cornell College. Cornell College Art Awards are valued at $2,500 per year. Acceptance and renewal require that a student remain in good standing with the college. To become a candidate for art scholarships: Submit the Art Scholarship Application and a portfolio with 5-15 pieces. Slides are encouraged, with emphasis on the best quality possible. Submit a sketchbook (optional). Portfolios are reviewed on a monthly basis, from October through March. Theatre Scholarships Cornell College offers theatre scholarships and awards to students with a background or high interest in dramatic performance and production. William Fletcher King (WFK) Theatre Scholarships are valued at $20,000 annually. Acceptance and renewal of the scholarship requires that a student a) maintain a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA, b) audition for each main-stage production, c) accept a production assignment for each main-stage production, and d) contribute at least three hours of service in the theatre department per week. Trustee Theatre Scholarships are valued at $15,000 per year and have the same renewal requirements as the WFK Scholarships. Cornell College Theatre Awards are valued at $2,500 and $5,000 for students with a background or high interest in dramatic performance and production. These awards are automatically renewed as long as the student remains in good academic standing with the college. Audition information Actors Monologues are preferred to scenes; include two pieces contrasting in style; combined length of both pieces should not exceed three minutes. Material, if developed from speech competition, should be dramatic in nature (taken from plays as opposed to fiction or poetry, and definitely not public address, persuasive, after-dinner speaking, or impromptu/extemp events). Memorization is required. Auditioners will also be interviewed. If the applicant is also a

2 singer, we encourage also auditioning for music scholarships. The two faculties will consult about such students. Dancers should prepare an acting selection and be prepared to talk knowledgeably about their performance experience. Designers/Technicians The faculty will interview students about technical theatre background; this will be the primary evaluation. However, students with any type of portfolio including production photos or slides, technical drawings, scenic or costume renderings, light plots, stage-management prompt scripts, and/or photographic depictions of scenic models are encouraged to present such materials at the interview. The lack of a portfolio will not be held against any applicant. Directors/Writers/Dramaturges The faculty will interview students about their interest in directing, theatrical writing, or theatrical research; this will be the primary means of evaluation. Students, however, are encouraged to present any research or preparation materials they may have created and, in the case of writers and dramaturges, a writing sample (dramatic writing from aspiring playwrights and expository writing from dramaturges). To become a candidate for theatre scholarships: Submit an Application for Admission to Cornell College. Submit the Theatre Scholarship Application. Submit a statement of interest telling us what your theatre interest is and what you expect of a Cornell theatre education. Submit a letter of recommendation from a director, technical director, or teacher. Perform a live audition or conduct an interview at Cornell. Videotapes are accepted but not encouraged. Submit a resumé (optional). Music Scholarships Music scholarships and awards are offered to students with significant promise in instrumental or vocal music. William Fletcher King Music Scholarships are valued at $20,000 annually. Acceptance and renewal of the scholarship requires that a student a) be a music major, b) be enrolled in a department-sponsored major ensemble performing on your principal (audition) instrument, c) take music lessons, d) be enrolled in a music performance seminar, and e) maintain a minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA. Acceptance and renewal of the scholarship requires that a student a) be enrolled in a department-sponsored major ensemble performing on your principal (audition) instrument, b) take music lessons, c) be enrolled in a music performance seminar, and d) remain in good academic standing with the college. Submit a resumé of your musical honors and activities. Perform a live audition (strongly recommended). Audition information The following repertoire suggestions provide a guide to the selection of literature for your audition. It is important to select music that displays your talents, and you are encouraged to discuss your selections with your instructor. Sight-reading and scales are not required. Seven minutes are allotted for an audition. Though you may be asked to stop at the end of the allotted time, this will not jeopardize your opportunity for a scholarship. You also have the option of auditioning in a second medium, and an additional time of five minutes will be scheduled later in the day. The audition judges are members of the Cornell music faculty. Piano Two works from: a composition from the Baroque era; a composition or first movement of a sonata from the Classical or Romantic period; a composition from the 20th century. Voice Memorization is required. Performance in the original language is optional. Popular songs are not recommended; however, repertoire from the musical theater is acceptable. Two works from: Old English songs; art songs, in contrasting styles, from Italian, German, or French repertoire; a contemporary British or American art song. String Instrument (including classical guitar) Two works chosen from: a composition from the Baroque era; a composition or first movement of a sonata from the Classical or Romantic period; a composition from the 20th century. Wind Instrument Transcriptions, when appropriate to the medium, are acceptable. Two works from: a concerto, sonata, or suite from the Baroque or Classical period; a concerto, sonata, or suite from the Romantic or Contemporary period. Percussion Two works in contrasting styles. Jazz One or two works which display your improvisatory skills. Cornell will provide a backup rhythm section if requested in advance. Participants in this category may be asked to sight-read. In the case that a student cannot perform a live audition, an audition by tape (audio or video) will be accepted. The Cornell College Office of Admission must receive the tape with your application materials.
