2 COURSE OVERVIEW Pediatric Emergency Medicine STATE OF THE ART This state of the art course in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, presented by the Boston Children s Hospital Emergency Medicine Faculty, aims to engage clinicians practicing pediatric emergency medicine including emergency physicians, acute care pediatricians, and residents and fellows in emergency medicine. Evidence-based, state of the art practice is presented by faculty who have written national guidelines and published widely on their topics. Didactic presentations and small group interactions maximize faculty contact with participants and facilitate specialized discussions and practical skills sessions on important clinical aspects of pediatric emergency medicine. Learning objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Evaluate the current management of pediatric sepsis focusing on early goal-directed therapy, strategies to improve outcomes, and relevant ED quality metrics Apply reasoned approaches to the diagnosis and management of pediatric poisonings Employ reasoned approaches to evaluation of cardiac emergencies in children Apply a thoughtful and evidence-based approach to the management of acute asthma exacerbations Employ a thoughtful reasoned approach to the evaluation of a child with a limp Employ a careful thoughtful approach to recognition and diagnostic testing for children with suspected nonaccidental trauma Apply reasoned approaches to the diagnosis and management of trauma in children Apply reasoned strategies for transferring children to another facility Employ a careful thoughtful approach to diagnostic evaluation and management of children with suspected appendicitis Employ strategies for optimizing analgesia and sedation of children in the ED setting Review diagnostic approaches and management strategies for critically ill children Recognize common pitfalls in diagnostic radiology in pediatric emergency medicine Demonstrate techniques for performing minor common pediatric procedures Apply techniques for performing critical pediatric procedures Recognize critically ill and injured children and apply appropriate management strategies including life support guidelines Target Audience The course is intended for: Pediatric Emergency Physicians General Emergency Physicians Acute Care Pediatricians

Interactive and Small Group Sessions Pre-registration required Registration by credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) can be completed through Harvard Medical School s secure online registration system at Registration by check (draft on a United States bank), please make payable to Harvard Medical School. 7 Accreditation The Harvard Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Harvard Medical School designates this live activity for a maximum of 15 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Risk Management This activity meets the criteria of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine for 9.25 credits of Risk Management Study. Please check your individual state licensing board requirements before claiming these credits. American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn 10 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada recognizes conferences and workshops held outside of Canada that are developed by a university, academy, hospital, specialty society or college as accredited group learning activities. Through an agreement between the American Medical Association and the European Union of Medical Specialists, physicians may convert AMA PRA Category 1 Credit to an equivalent number of European CME Credits (ECMECs ).
