He has taught and mentored at all levels of nursing to include LPN, ADN, BSN, MSN, and PhD. Developing new programs, innovations in learning, and helping programs internationally, he is an expert in bringing the evidence-base of nursing, leadership, healthcare, and education to students and faculty at all levels. Through consultations, writing, and mentoring, Dr. Bristol assists faculty in identifying the competencies needed to effectively enhance programs for optimal student outcomes. He has certification as a nurse educator, is a fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education, and is internationally known for bringing excitement through success to his colleagues and students. Mark Taylor, MSW, EdD Dr. Mark Taylor is an award winning speaker recognized internationally as an educator, expert and thought leader who is on the forefront of transformations in educational practice and workplace management. He is dedicated to helping colleges, universities, schools and professional programs better understand and serve our students for learning, development, persistence and successful integration into the after college world. His work focuses on helping people understand and work more effectively with the generational groups, especially our young people from Generation NeXt. Publications include professional journal articles including his recent articles on Teaching Generation NeXt. His most recent publication is in the journal LEADERSHIP on helping faculty move to research based instruction. Cheryl M. Smith, EdD, MSN, RN, FNP Cheryl M. Smith, EdD is Professor of Nursing at Columbus State University School of Nursing in the College of Education and Health Professions, Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Smith has worked as a nurse and nurse educator for over 40 years. She joined Columbus State in 2007 and previously taught at Auburn University School of Nursing, Auburn, Alabama. Her specialty areas are pediatrics, leadership, and evidence-based practice in nursing. She has an active interest in technology and simulation. Her recent work has been in bringing awareness to nurse educators about bullying and incivility in the nursing profession. Kathleen D. Pagana, PhD, RN Kathy has been a leader in healthcare for more than 40 years with experiences including military service, clinical practice, college teaching, administration, publishing, and speaking. She has recently been awarded the prestigious designation of Certified Speaking Professional by the National Speakers Association. Kathy has written more than 90 articles, and she and her husband are the co-authors of 29 books including the Pagana & Pagana Mosby s Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference. The second edition of her book, The Nurse s Etiquette Advantage, received an AJN Book of the Year Award in She keeps current in nursing practice by working in a hospital several days a month. They have characteristics and expectations that present unique challenges to those of us charged with teaching, serving and supervising them through their nursing training. Their issues with academic preparation, responsibility and self-esteem, consumer expectations, use of technology and styles of interacting can impact, and interfere with, their learning, persistence and academic success at school, and workplace readiness and success. This program will help nursing faculty understand the social, personal and academic traits and preferences our students bring to their training, how these characteristics impact learning, persistence and success, and how we can best help all of our students reach their educational goals by transitioning to a researched informed model of learning based on increasing both student activity and leveraging available technologies to improve instructional efficiency and effectiveness. An instructional model and methods to increase students responsibility for their own learning, personal ownership of class goals and to improve students reaching meaningful learning and developmental goals will be described and demonstrated with immediately applicable techniques.
