2 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW This conference provides participants with an in-depth examination of compelling ethical challenges faced by behavioral and mental health professionals. Building on introductory ethics concepts, this presentation explores difficult ethics cases and practical strategies designed to protect clients and practitioners. A series of challenging ethics cases involving conflicting professional duties will be presented, followed by a discussion of conceptually based, practical ways for professionals to skillfully manage ethical dilemmas. Key topics include boundary issues, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, clients rights, termination of services, and impaired professionals. The presentation also includes discussion of relevant ethical standards, statutes, regulations, case law, supervision, and consultation. The workshop satisfies the three-hour ethics requirements for social workers.

PROFESSOR, RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK Frederic Reamer is a professor in the graduate program of the Rhode Island College School of Social Work where he has been on the faculty since His research and teaching address a wide range of human service issues, including mental health, health care, criminal justice, professional ethics, and, more recently, ethical issues involving electronic communications and social networking websites in the provision of professional services. He has published numerous articles on the subject in his column Eye on Ethics in the journal Social Work Today. A prolific author, Dr. Reamer has written 18 books, including Tangled Relationships: Managing Boundary Issues in the Human Services. He speaks to multidisciplinary audiences and has conducted extensive research on professional ethics. He s also been involved in several national research projects sponsored by the Hastings Center, the Carnegie Corporation, and the Haas Foundation.
