1 Program Concentration: Healthcare Science Career Pathway: Medical Services Course Title: General Medicine Director: Mrs. Swindell, RN Telephone: ext My Daily Schedule: Morning Duty 8:20 8:50 1 st Period 8:50 9:55 Planning Period 9:55 10:50 2 nd Period 10:50 11:55 Lunch 11:55 12:15 3 rd Period 12:15 1:20 Passing Period 1:20 1:25 4 th Period 1:25 2:30 Planning Period 2:30 3:20 Course Description/Goals This course is designed to offer team members the opportunity to become effective and efficient multi-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of each of the major departments of the average acute care setting/hospital, including but not limited to: Orthopedics, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging, MedSurg, Gastroenterology, Urology, and Customer Care Services. Team members focusing on a career path in medicine or on a career in one of the ancillary departments noted above will apply classroom/lab knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as they participate in direct client care. The work-based learning strategy appropriate for this course is a minimum 40-hour clinical practicum. This course will be taught in eleven units which correspond to the Georgia Performance Standards for this course. The Georgia Performance Standards for this course are posted in the classroom and online at
2 Textbook Effingham College and Career Academy maintains a classroom set of textbooks for use at school. Team members requiring the use of a textbook at home are required to check-out his/her assigned textbook with Mrs. Swindell. Team members will also receive a workbook for this course. Team members are responsible for the care and upkeep of his/her assigned textbook and workbook. Introduction to Healthcare Science Technology Applications of Therapeutic Services Prerequisite Courses Classroom Design Upon entering the classroom, team members are to be seated at the tables in the center of the classroom. These tables do not have computers on them. Team members are to sit at computer workstations ONLY when prompted to do so by Mrs. Swindell. Team members are not permitted to enter the lab area of the classroom unless instructed by Mrs. Swindell. Computer/Internet The computers and internet are to be used for educational purposes only. Team members may use computers/internet only when instructed by Mrs. Swindell. Please refer to the Internet Acceptable Use Policy and the Use of Internet/Technology Policy located in the Student/Parent Handbook for detailed policy regarding the use of computers and internet access. Evaluation/Grading Grading Scale: Evaluations per nine weeks: A class work 20% B tests/quizzes 20% C work ethic 20% Below 70 F labs/clinicals/projects 40% *Team members will receive a separate work ethic report card for each 9-week period. The work ethic report care will highlight the team members strenghths and weaknesses in the categories. The work ethic report cared score will be transferred to the team members 9-week report cards. Team members are expected to participate in all class discussions, activities, group activities, and projects. Daily points will be assigned based on team members overall work ethic in the classroom. Professionalism/Work Ethic Professionalism is a key character trait for any healthcare professionals. Team members not displaying professional behavior in the classroom or clinical may be removed from clinical, this course, and/or the Effingham College and Career Academy. Please refer to the Work Ethic Traits displayed in the classroom and in the Student/Parent Handbook for the expectations regarding the team members work ethic.
3 Absences/Make-up Work Please make every attempt to attend all scheduled class days and clinical hours. Team members may only make up missed work if the absence is excused. It is the team members responsibility to inquire about missing assignments/notes on the first day back at school following an absence. Team members have 3 days from their return date to turn in make-up work. All make-up work turned in after the 3 day period will be reduced by 30%. Any assignments or tests not submitted by these dates will result in a zero. 1 st Quarter Progress Report Deadline for submitting assignments: August 24, st Quarter Report Cards Deadline for submitting assignments: September 25, nd Quarter Progress Report Deadline for submitting assignments: November 5, nd Quarter Report Cards Deadline for submitting assignments: December 12, rd Quarter Progress Report Deadline for submitting assignments: January 29, rd Quarter Report Cards Deadline for submitting assignments: March 6, th Quarter Progress Report Deadline for submitting assignments: April 16, th Quarter Report Cards Deadline for submitting assignments: May 15, 2013 Classroom/Clinical Infraction and Consequences Infraction: Not calling Mrs. Swindell and their Clinical Site Proctor prior to missing a clinical day/unexcused clinical absence Consequence: o Parent/Guardian will be notified o Team member will receive a zero for that clinical day o Team member will receive an unexcused school absence Infraction: Classroom/Equipment Abuse Consequence: o Parent/Guardian will be notified o Team member will pay for any damaged equipment o Office referral Infraction: Disrespectful behavior to anyone- including clinical time Consequence: o Parent/Guardian will be notified o Possible office referral o Removal from clinical location with a grade of zero for that day o Possible removal from course
4 Clinical for General Medicine o Team members are required to complete a minimum of 40 clinical hours in an approved healthcare setting. o Any absence from clinical is strongly discouraged however, if the team member does miss a clinical, he/she is responsible for notifying Mrs. Swindell and his/her clinical site proctor. o Team members will need a written excuse signed by their parent/guardian to be excused from a clinical absence. Any missed clinical time must be made up. o Clinical Evaluations and Journals: Clinical site proctors will fill out evaluations for the student s performance at each clinical site. Students are responsible for getting the evaluations to their proctor. Evaluations and journals are due weekly. A clinical site proctor is the person directly supervising and responsible for the team member during their clinical rotation. This could be a nurse, pharmacist, nursing assistant, veterinary technician, dental hygienist depending on the team member's clinical site. These evaluations reflect the team member s timely arrival, appearance, behavior, and level of responsibility. It is important to remember that at all times, behavior reflects on the Effingham College and Career Academy. Infractions will be taken seriously. o Team members should come to clinical well-groomed in a clean pressed uniform. Fingernails are to be short natural nails without polish, hair must be off the collar, or must be pulled back and put up, a single small stud pair of earrings, watch with second hand, and plain ring are the only jewelry acceptable. o Team members are expected to display positive work ethic traits and professionalism at all times. o Most clinical hours will occur during the school during the team members scheduled class time and/or on occasional Saturdays depending on where the team member the team member wishes to work.
5 Special Requirements for General Medicine No team member will be permitted to attend clinical until requirements below have been met o Current and up to date Immunization Record o Copy of completion of a two-step TB skin test o Copy of current CPR certification o Consent to participate in random drug screening per Effingham County Hospital and CDC guidelines o Copy of driver s license o Copy of proof of current insurance on vehicle o Team member must have transportation to and from clinical o Paper o Pencil/Pen (Black or Blue Ink Only) Supplies o 3 Ring Binder or a section within a 3 Ring Binder for notes/assignments o Clinical Uniform: Solid black medical uniform (scrubs, nursing uniform, shirt/pant/skirt). No additional piping/colors on uniform allowed. Optional: white/black undershirt (long/short sleeve), white lab coat, and embroidery of first and last name on left chest area (white embroider on black uniform/black embroider on white lab coat). Uniforms may be purchased from any retailer. One or two uniforms should be enough for the entire program. Approximate cost for one uniform is $30.
