GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION A. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to and application of primary nursing skills. Emphasis on utilization of the nursing process and related scientific principles. 2
3 B. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Following completion of this course, the student will be able to: (DECS) 1. Demonstrate methods for promoting nurse, patient and environmental/workplace safety. 2. Demonstrate satisfactory compliance with patient rights. 3. Demonstrate satisfactory performance of selected nursing skills utilizing principles of safety and the nursing process. 4. Demonstrate satisfactory data collection and observation skills. 5. Demonstrate appropriate written, verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on providing compassionate care throughout all life stages and cultures. 6. Demonstrate principles of infection prevention and asepsis. 7. Discuss principles of medication administration. 8. Demonstrate proficiency in medication dose calculation. 9. Demonstrate proficiency in safe medication administration. 10. Recognize basic aspects of evidence based practice. 11. Recognize ethical and legal issues in nursing and basic knowledge of nurse practice act. 12. Utilize aspects of critical thinking and the nursing process when providing patient care. (WECM): 1. Describe the underlying principles of selected nursing skills and their relationship to health status 2. Demonstrate satisfactory performance of selected nursing skills utilizing principles of safety. 3. Identify the nursing process to solve basic client are problems across the life span. C. COURSE COMPETENCIES: A = B = C = D = F = 69 and below Grades are not rounded. A 76.9 is a D The student must receive a minimum of 77% in each course, and meet the specified clinical 3

VERIFICATION of WORKFORCE COMPETENCIES No external learning experiences provided but learning experiences in lab provide a setting in which student applies workplace competencies. Successful completion of the DECS Competency statements at the level specified by the course (Level Objectives) will allow the student to continue to advance within the program. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the state board exam (NCLEX) for vocational nurse licensure. 4
5 II. SPECIFIC COURSE/INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS A. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS 1. Burton, Marti (2015). 2 nd edition Fundamentals of Nursing Care FA Davis 2. Study Guide for above, 2 nd edition. The study guide workbook must be brand new and may not be written in previously. May not submit ebook version of study guide. 3. Additional required materials: Mandatory Films as announced by the instructor. Access to Video Links required 4. Nurse Practice Act, most recent version, State of Texas 5. Clayton, Bruce. (2016) Basic Pharmacology for Nurses Elsevier 6. Curren, Ana. (Most recent version) Math for Meds Elsevier 7. Davis s Drug Guide for Nurses (2019), or most recent release The student MUST have the most recent edition of the required textbooks and workbooks. Students will not be allowed to attend class unless the newest edition is brought to class each day. See student handbook for requirements for bringing textbook to class. B. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Contact Hours Please see SPC catalogue and Vocational Nursing Student Handbook. Students are expected to attend all classes and to remain for the entire class period. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. Students not responding to roll are marked absent in the attendance record. No more than 18 hours of class time may be missed, or the student will be withdrawn from the class. Three (3) tardies count as one (1) hours' absence. C. ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Students will be responsible for performing skills 1:1 with the instructor, performing during mass check offs, filming several skills or performing skills at the nursing simulation lab. These films or performances MUST be completed on or before the due date. If the skill is not passed on the third attempt or filming, or if the student does not meet the deadline, the student will appear before the 5
6 Admissions Academic Standards Committee. Practice time and time to film skills will be required outside regular classroom hours. The nursing skills lab is sometimes open extended hours to accommodate practice time and filming time. Some skills require 4 hours (or more) of mandatory practice time in order to check off successfully the first time. D. GRADING POLICY Unit Exams 70% Quizzes & Written Assignments 10% Final Examination 10% Student study guide 10% (PLEASE NOTE: THE STUDENT MUST PASS THE MEDICATION CALCULATION TEST WITH A GRADE OF 90% OR HIGHER) E. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 1. See student handbook regarding failure to turning required assignments. 2. Students are required to read assigned text and view assigned films PRIOR to lecture and/or demonstration. The student is responsible for learning terminology and abbreviations. 3. There will be an exam after the completion of each assigned unit, and a comprehensive final examination at the end of the course. Unit exams will not be made up. A grade of 0 will be given. The lowest test grade will be dropped. Always be prepared for an unannounced pop quiz. Quizzes are not eligible for make-up and a grade of 0 (zero) will be automatically given. 4. Students will be responsible for completing the student study guide for the material on the unit exam. The study guide will be turned in at the beginning of the test over the material. It will be graded on accuracy and completeness. 100% complete and accurate will result in a grade of 100% for that unit s section. All study guide grades will be averaged together to comprise 10% of the total grade for this course. 5. Student must successfully complete and pass units I through IV in order to attend clinicals. 6. Some check-offs will be mass check-offs, where the student goes from module to module to complete numerous check-offs. 6
7 7. Students will be required to complete some check-offs 1:1 with the instructor via an appointment system. The time allotted for the checkoff will be announced by the faculty. Faculty will determine if these skills check offs will be conducted in the nursing lab, recording room or SIM Lab. If the student does not pass the skill, the make-up time will be assigned by the faculty. a. Elimination 45 minutes b. Vital Signs 20 minutes c. Health Assessment 60 minutes d. Sterile technique 45 minutes e. Sterile dressing wet/dry 45 minutes f. Catheterization 45 minutes g. PO medication administration 45 minutes h. Topical medication administration 30 minutes 8. Appointment policy: If student does not notify faculty of absence for 1:1 skills by 0800 for an AM check off or by 1130 for a PM check off, this will be considered a no call, no show. That no call, no show will count as 1 skill failure. If the student does not notify faculty by the previously mentioned times of an absence for the second time in the semester, that will count as a second no call, no show and will result in course failure and removal from the program. Student will only be allowed to reschedule an individual skill once and only 3 total reschedules are allowed during the semester. Failure to comply with the 3 reschedule policy will result in an appearance before the academic/admissions committee. Students will need to arrive AT LEAST an hour before their appointment time to gather supplies and to be ready in the event faculty available earlier than scheduled time. PLEASE BE AWARE DUE DATES MUST BE ADHERED TO, AND THAT MOST SKILLS HAVE ONLY 2 DAYS ALLOTED FOR CHECK- OFFS. DO NOT COUNT ON BEING ABLE TO CHECK OFF THE SKILL ON THE AFTERNOON OF THE LAST DAY! 9. Students should use the available on-line skills rubric for the Davis textbook to help with practice, etc. 10. Skills checkoffs will not be considered complete unless the student has demonstrated proper documentation. The documentation is included in the timed portion of the skill. Before the checkoff, students should read the required documentation section in the Davis textbook for ideas on what should be charted. The student will only be allowed 3 cues, prompts and reminders from the faculty (CPRs) with documentation. If the student does not complete the documentation with only 3 CPRS, 2 more chances will be allowed. If the student does not pass the documentation by the 3 rd opportunity, the student will need to repeat the entire skill. 7
8 11. Medication dose calculation policy: The student is expected to score 90% or higher on the medication dose calculation test. If the student does not score 90%, the student will meet with the instructor to discuss learning needs and will retest. If the student does not score 90% or higher on the 2 nd retest, the student will meet with the instructor to discuss learning needs. A third test will be given. If the student does not pass the 3 rd test, the student will be removed from the nursing program. 12. Students will not be allowed to use programmable calculators during testing. 13. Student seating and placement will be at the discretion of the instructor during demo/practice and check-off, lecture and testing. Students may not have cell phones, or smart watches, or any other electronic device on their person, in their vicinity or on the desk during testing. 14. During class, lecture, testing and lab, cell phones must be turned OFF (not just on vibrate). Smart watches and/or fit bit watches, or any other electronic devices are NOT allowed. F. REQUIRED SUPPLIES Access to computer with video capability, internet, and printer Refer to policy in student handbook regarding availability of textbooks during lectures and demonstrations Laboratory supplies and bag Watch with second hand, stethoscope, penlight Laboratory coat, clothing and hair as specified in the dress code Supplies for keeping hair out of face G. RECORDING POLICY Recording of lectures, presentations and discussions is not permitted. H. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: It is the aim of the faculty of South Plains College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and will result in dismissal from South Plains College. See honesty policy within this syllabus. Assisting another student or using notes/other assistance during checkoffs are not authorized and are considered a violation of the honesty policy. I. Campus Concealed Carry Texas Senate Bill 11 (Government Code , et al) authorizes the carrying of a concealed handgun in South Plains College buildings only by persons who have been issued and are in possession of a Texas License to Carry a Handgun. Qualified law enforcement officers or those who are otherwise authorized to carry a 8
