What you need for marching band Rehearsal Attire: Band and Guard Members 1. Light colored shirts (preferably white) are required for each rehearsal. This keeps you cool and makes it easier for directors to clean drill from the tower. 2. The Grant Co. High School Dress Code will be followed throughout the season with the exception that hats are allowed at all rehearsals 3. Tennis Shoes a. Absolutely no boots, sandals, etc. b. Students must wear socks at all times c. Bare feet are never allowed! 4. It is required that students with long hair put it up out of the face and off of the neck to keep cool. Contest Attire: The yearly Marching Band Show Shirt must be worn to all contests and football games. It is recommended that your show shirt is not worn underneath the uniform, as the excessive amount of sweat would make a new shirt look old very quickly. Every member must order a show shirt ($15- $20) in August. Family members are also allowed to purchase Marching Band Show Shirts. Uniforms: The Grant Co. Band Boosters Association is charged with the responsibility of maintaining the band uniforms. The portion of the expenses that each band member pays at the beginning of the school year is used by the Band Boosters to clean our uniforms several times during the school year. Each uniform consists of pants (white), a jacket, a hat, hat plume, gauntlet, white socks, and white shoes. Students are expected to furnish long white socks and white shoes. The shoes will be measured and purchased early in the marching season. The cost for shoes is approximately $ Fitting for the school-supplied portion of the uniform will also occur early in the season. If the student has hair that goes below the collar of the jacket, it should be put up for the proper fitting of the hat. Students must wear a t-shirt under their jacket and white undergarments that will not be visible through our white pants. If any student is deliberately careless or abusive with one of our uniforms, that student will be held accountable for cleaning/replacement.
Uniforms Cont 1. It is recommended that the student put his or her name/initial on the inside of their band shoes or any other student purchased items 2. Shoes should be cleaned and polished for every performance 3. The only jewelry that may be visible while in uniform is small stud earrings, no hoops of any size. 4. Hair cannot be visible below the collar or the student will be required to wear a hairnet. 5. Student facial hair must be maintained. The band uniform is the responsibility of the student and must never be left in an unoccupied space. The Grant County Band uniform is a symbol of pride and tradition. When wearing this uniform, students must embody the virtues that we stand for as an organization Pride, Integrity, and Respect. Band Fees Maintaining a competitive marching band can get expensive with contest registration fees, transportation expenses, hotels, staff expenses, uniforms, instruments, show design, etc. The Grant County Band Booster Organization does an excellent job of fundraising year round to cover many of these expenses, but band fees are still a necessity. Compared to other bands in our state, our marching band fees are relatively inexpensive (Dunbar: $800/student, Beechwood: $650/student). The Grant County Marching Band Fees for 2017 will be: Single Member: $300 Sibling Fee: $250 These fees are mandatory for all members of the band and are truly needed in order to continue to offer our kids the experience that they deserve. Payment plans can be as flexible as needed and all checks should be made out to Grant County High School. Volunteer Obligation In order for our band booster organization to be successful and absorb most of the costs related to marching band, it is necessary that we ask each family to donate 25 volunteer hours during the year. There are a number of opportunities, over the course of the school year, for families to complete this obligation. More information regarding volunteer opportunities will be available soon.
Grant Co. Band Traveling Rules BUS EXPECTATIONS: 1. Students will remain seated and facing forward while the bus is in motion 2. Band members will use their speaking voice when on the bus. 3. No food or drink is allowed unless authorized by the driver 4. The driver and chaperones are extensions of the directors at all times HOTEL CONDUCT AND EXPECTATIONS 1. All Grant County School rules apply at all times 2. Band members will not be permitted in any hotel room containing members of the opposite sex. No unauthorized persons will be permitted to visit when we are staying in a hotel. 3. Students are expected to behave at all times in the hotel. You are representing Grant County High School, your band, and your family. 4. All students are expected to participate in all activities. 5. Parents and students will be held responsible for paying for any property damage or room charges. 6. School dress code applies at all times unless noted by the director 7. Swimsuits are only to be worn at appropriate times, such as going to the pool 8. Rooms are to be locked at all times when students are not in the room. 9. No instruments are to be played in hotel rooms. 10. Infractions will be dealt with by the Band Program and the school authorities. 11. All students should realize that for the duration of the trip, any personal desires, uniqueness of character, or other individualities must be considered secondary to the traits that facilitate large group control and management. 12. Under no circumstances will you be permitted to leave the hotel except when with the entire group. 13. Profanity is not a part of the Grant County Band Program. Make sure that your language is never offensive while with the band. 14. Curfew requires students to stay in their own rooms. Lights-out will be followed by all members. A director can dismiss a student from a band related trip/activity at anytime
ATTENDANCE POLICY Tips for Parents: Get your child to every rehearsal at least 15 minutes early. Let your child know that you think band practice is important. Provide a plan of transportation for getting your child to and from practice on time. Schedule doctor, dentist, and other appointments around the practice schedule. If your child must be out of school part of the day, allow him/her to miss only the time necessary for the appointment. Do not view tardiness as acceptable behavior. Refuse to write an excuse for anything other than a legitimate absence. Discourage any checkouts from school. In case of prolonged absence due to illness or hospitalization, etc., notify the band director ASAP There is a direct relationship between attendance and achievement. Students who have good attendance generally achieve higher grades, have fewer problems at school, enjoy school more, and are much more employable after school. Excused Absences For up to three (3) days during the marching season, parent notes or an excusable admit slip from the appropriate teacher will be accepted for certain reasons. If the school will excuse your absence, so will I. Excused absences will be for one of the following reasons: 1. Personal illness of the student 2. Serious illness in the immediate family 3. Death in the family 4. School related activity that cannot occur outside of band practice. 5. Music or school related activity that is a unique privilege for the student and cannot occur outside of band practice. 4 th Excused Absence: Student will not march with the band in the next performance. However, the student will dress in uniform and stand at attention on the front sideline facing the audience. 5 th Excused Absence: Student will not perform with the band for the remainder of the season. The position will be filled by an alternate (if available) or eliminated. Unexcused Absences An Unexcused Absence occurs when the student is absent from band practice without the knowledge and/or consent of the parent or director and when the absence is not for one of the reasons listed above in the excused absence category. It is important to note that parental consent or knowledge does not constitute and excused absence, unless the reason for the absence falls under the listed excused absences. Unexcused Absences could include the following: 1. Skipping band practice or a large portion of practice 2. Missing band practice for work 3. Going to another activity during band practice that could be done at another time. 4. Anything not listed as an excused absence. 1 st Unexcused Absence: Student will not march with the band in the next performance. However, the student will dress in uniform and stand at attention on the front sideline facing the audience. 2 nd Unexcused Absence: Student will not perform with the band for the remainder of the season. The position will be filled by an alternate (if available) or eliminated.
Parental Accountability When a student decides to join band, it is important that everyone responsible for that student is equally committed to the experience. Feeding your child before rehearsal, getting him/her there on time, picking him/her up at the end of the day, volunteering, and paying fees are all part of being a band parent. They will not be successful without your support and commitment! For families in joint custody situations, it is important that all parties involved are on the same page and accept the role that they will play in helping the child be successful. Conflicts with Band Marching Band season is extremely time consuming. It is recommended that students spend the months from July-October focusing on band and school and do not over-commit themselves with additional activities or obligations. Marching Band season is not a good time for vacations, starting a new job, or joining a new team or club. What we do is very demanding and rewarding, and being successful means making sacrifices and making band a priority. Students and parents who are not prepared to make these sacrifices should not do marching band. Philosophy of Competition The Grant County Marching Band is fortunate to have had a long history of competitive success in KMEA. The plaques, trophies, and championships that hang in the band room represent thousands of hours of passionate work invested by our students over the years and I am very proud of what those success stories mean to our community. However, our first objective and reason for having a marching band is to push our kids to discover their potential and to teach them life skills that will help them grow into adults with discipline and character. As the director, it is my job to determine what the students are capable of doing and to insist that they reach that potential. Students who do not give their best effort to reaching their potential will never be able to be competitively successful and should recognize that marching band is one of many ways to have positive musical experiences. When that level of effort, discipline, and character is not met by a student, the director reserves the right to remove the student from the competitive activity.
BAND CAMP HOW TO PREPARE Stay active and spend time outside during the month of June. Get your body acclimated to doing physical activity in the heat. Cut out sugary drinks and start drinking water instead. Hydrating your body has to happen in advance drinking a Gatorade before a rehearsal will not give your body time to get rid of all the junk you had previously put in it! Drinking water before bed can help your body repair itself so that you can perform better the next day. Eat breakfast every day. At lunch and dinner, stop eating when you are no longer hungry. Do not treat mealtime as a chance to see how much food you can eat before becoming uncomfortable. It is crucial that every member continue to improve his or her craft individually during the month of June. That means playing your instrument and spinning your flag. Playing an instrument is not like riding a bike! It is more like being an athlete and you have to keep your chops in shape. If you don t use it, you lose it! Great accomplishments require great expectations. Every wind player is expected to be able to play his/her notes and rhythms by the first day of band camp. MATERIALS Water bottle/jug with name (MANDATORY!) Pencil Light colored shirt Instrument/Equipment Music 3-ring binder with plastic sheets to hold music and drill Low-top tennis shoes (no sandals or high-tops) Hat Sunscreen (Don t be the mooch who is always borrowing other people s sunscreen) Every student must be prepared with all materials at every rehearsal. If a student is unprepared, the following consequences may be carried out: Running laps, extra clean-up responsibilities, cleaning the band locker room, being denied the opportunity to perform that weekend, etc.
