Therefore, the subjects listed on the syllabus are consistent with the competencies and skills contained in the prepared by the Tennessee Medical Services in keeping with the United States Department of Transportation curriculum. Consequently, this course is designed to prepare individuals for taking the Basic Medical Technician license examination administered by the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Medical Service. Topics covered include an overview of the role and responsibility of the emergency medical technician in provided medical care services such as patient assessment, splinting and bandaging. Additional studies include basic trauma care, pediatric emergency care, and intravenous therapy offered in two semesters (prerequisite: EMTB 1040). EMTB 1010 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN I 8 credits Competencies: On completion of this course the student should have the cognitive and the psychomotor skills to perform the following skills: Patient assessment, to include an assessment of the patient utilizing a system approach to learn all relevant medical history, making pertinent observations of the environment and doing a pertinent physical examination; Airway management, to include oxygen administration, ventilatory management with a dual lumen airway device (combitube or PTLA), suctioning and observes endotracheal/nasotracheal intubation. Assist in cardiac arrest, including CPR, airway management and observe defibrillation/cardioversion. All basic EMT skills, including application of MAST suit, traction splints, cervical immobilization device, and other EMT level devices. Formulate a plan of treatment by determining mechanism of injury, triage of patients, patient assessment and treatment, radio usage and daily operations in the emergency department. 2 of 7

3 Grading Policy: Walters State Community College Medical Technology Mastery of Learning (Exams): 50% 1. If you score <70 on any EXAM, you will have one (1) week to retake the exam. 2. If you score <70 on the retest, you will be dismissed from the EMT program. 3. If you score >69, the original grade along with the retest will be averaged for your composite EXAM grade. Quizzes: 15% 1. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped from your record. 2. Quizzes can t be made up. 3. Any missed quizzes due to tardiness or being absent will be recorded as a 0. Participation: 10% 1. Based on how well the student interacts in class. a. 100 points for each class b. Drops 50% for unexcused Tardies c. Drops 100% for unexcused Absences Final: 25% 1. The final is a formal summative assessment. State Board Exam Eligibility: 1. Must meet all the skills competency requirements. 2. Must have a composite semester average no lower than 70% C. 3. Even if these previous requirements are met, the instructor must release student. Grading Scale: A B C D (No longer eligible for state board exam) <63 F Class Attendance: Attendance is part of the course grade and is required in order to be eligible for state testing (Refer to WSCC Student Handbook for detailed explanation of the attendance policy). Excused absences/tardies are to be documented by the proper authorities (Teacher, Doctor, Clinic, Court, etc.). Quizzes that are missed due to an unexcused absence or tardy constitute a 0 grade and are not allowed to be made up. 3 of 7

4 Student Conduct: Walters State Community College Medical Technology Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. The penalty for cheating shall be receiving a 0 (zero) on the examination or assignment with the possibility of dismissal from the program. The chewing or spitting of smokeless tobacco products are not allowed in the classroom. Disruptions are also prohibited and will lead to dismissal from the class. Cellular phones, PDA s, Pagers, and radios are to be turned to the non-audible mode until after class, at which time calls can be received or checked. Late Assignments: Assignments will not be accepted after seven days without an emergency medical excuse. Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities must register with the Student Support Services Office in CCEN 262 Phone Number (423) if they need any special facilities, services, or consideration. Financial Aid Statement: Students receiving any type of financial aid or scholarship should contact the financial aid office before making any changes to their schedule. Schedule changes without prior approval may result in loss of award for the current term and the future terms. WSCC Catalog Notification: All students attending Walters State Community College, regardless of the time and location of the class, must abide by the rules and regulations outlined in the current Walters State Catalog/Student Handbook and the current Walters State Timetable of Classes.
