NAVY JROTC COURSE SYLLABUS CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Instructors: LT Carl Jones-SNSI-NS3/NS4 Gunnery Sgt Anthony Elder NS1 Chief Gary Dudley NS1/NS2 Room Number: NJROTC BLDG FALL, 2017 Textbooks: NS1, NS2, NS3, NS4, Field Manual NJROTC New Parent Meeting is August 23 Phone number: ext Website: Central High Cafeteria 5:30 pm Course Goal: The main goal of the program is to instill in students the skills necessary to excel academically and socially at Central High School, ultimately leading to achievement of personal intermediate and long term goals. Sixty percent of the course grade is dependent upon the cadet s ability to routinely display a positive, self-confident attitude, and properly wear the uniform. Twenty percent of the course grade is the cadet s ability to proactively participate in drill and physical training. Twenty percent of the course grade is related to academics and leadership lab. The expectation is that every cadet will comply with clearly defined course rules and regulations specified in this syllabus, persevere in challenging situations, and act respectfully to everyone. As the cadet gains experience and displays the characteristics of a positive, mature, and supportive follower, it is expected that he or she will desire to earn rank and fill positions of leadership within the unit. While serving in a leadership position, the cadet will learn the importance of teamwork, effective, two-way communications within a chain of command, and earn the respect of subordinates that will ultimately lead to successful accomplishment of clearly defined unit goals. The NJROTC program methodology is designed to provide a cadet the skill set necessary to effectively prioritize, tackle, and solve challenging problems that will prepare him or her to successfully achieve personal, short term high school academic goals, followed by intermediate and long term post-high school educational and career goals. Course Description: The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a leadership program designed to give students a head start. NJROTC develops the self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills to help students successfully meet life challenges. People who are successful in life, who succeed in business, industry, and education, have developed strong self-discipline, the ability to lead and motivate others, and a well-rounded character. The NJROTC curriculum and instructional activities are designed to develop your leadership ability regardless of your career path. Course Outline: The Naval Science Curriculum consists of four textbooks: NS1 level cadets will study from the Cadet Field Manual (CFM) and Intro to NJROTC Textbook. NS2 level cadets will study from Naval Science 2 textbook and Cadet Field Manual, NS3 level cadets will study from the Naval Science 3 textbook and Cadet Field Manual. NS4 level will study from the Naval Science 4 lesson book. NS4 cadets will get additional career enhancement lessons to assist them in their future careers beyond high school. Course Prerequisites: Student and parent read and sign course syllabus and supporting paperwork (i.e. Uniform policy, Code of Conduct, health forms). Parents must also provide valid phone numbers, and addresses to facilitate communication. Parents must actively return phone calls concerning their student s progress and/or conduct. CHS NJROTC requires positive parent, student, and instructor communications. Parents must ensure your child is physically able to complete this course.

Central High School Grading System: A B C D 60-Below. F Grading Scale Area Percentage ACADEMICS/Assignments (tests & quizzes) 20% Drill/PT Participation 20% Uniforms (NSU s & PT) wear. (Personnel inspection) Conduct (Discipline Referrals) 60% 100% Frequent non-compliance in dressing out or wearing uniform will result in disciplinary referral and a conduct grade of zero. 3 or more is considered frequent. Important Note: Five paperwork documents require cadet and parent signature: Health Risk, Standard Release Form, Course Syllabus, Sports Physicals, Code of Conduct. Receipt of these signed documents within the first two weeks will result in a grade of 100/paper; 3 rd week - 90; 4 th week - 80; 5 th week - 70; after 5 th week - zero). Sports Physicals must be complete within 30 days. Classroom Expectations: Each cadet is expected to comply with rules and regulations as specified in the Central High School Hand book and NJROTC Code of Conduct. Each cadet will be treated fairly and consistently as young adults and are expected to be fully responsible and accountable for their actions. Of primary importance is a display of respect at all times for self, classmates, instructors, and all school administrators and support staff. In addition, each cadet must be supportive in creating a quality learning environment during curricular and extra-curricular NJROTC activities Late Assignments: Cadets must develop the ability to plan and manage their time effectively. Meeting established timelines is a very important skill that is required in the real world after high school. Assignments are given in Navy JROTC for the purpose of assessing timeliness as well as content. As a general rule, reduced credit will be given for submission of late assignments within a limited timeframe (Late Assignments must be turned in by the end of the School day to receive partial credit (75). This will be solely at the discretion of the SNSI/NSI. Fees: NJROTC Fees are $50 per year or $25 per semester. All fees must be paid by September 5th to receive a grade of 100 for Academics grade. If fees are not paid by the deadline date, they will not receive a pt uniform and will get points deducted from their PT grade. Our fees cover the expenses of purchasing PT clothing for the summer and winter months and name tags, certificates and awards.

Academics: Point deductions as noted on tests. Required Materials: a. Uniforms - Issued at no charge. Code of Conduct specifies cadet uniform responsibilities. b. Uniform maintenance items: Cadets are responsible for consumable items (i.e. black shoe polish, brass polish, and tissue) to prepare shoes and belt buckles for uniform inspection, prior to arriving at school vice upon entering the NJROTC classroom. c. Three ring notebook: Mandatory to organize course material. Code of Conduct, Course Syllabus, and other NJROTC material will be retained in the same binder and made available for reference during the school year. d. Textbooks: Unless notified in advance, cadets will be financially responsible for replacing textbooks that have been damaged beyond normal wear and tear.

e. Writing implements: Pens/pencils and notebook paper must be brought to class every Monday and Thursday. (exception to cadets assigned to the drill class) Make-up Policy: Cadets are expected to attend school and be in their assigned class. This is particularly important in lieu of the new period scheduling at Central High School. Truancy and skipping are serious infractions and reflect poorly on a cadet s maturity and personal integrity. Excessive excused absentees are also highly discouraged and seriously undermine a cadet s ability to perform well in their primary role as students. Tests or academic assignments that are incomplete due to an excused absence may only be made up within three (3) school days of returning to class. It is entirely the responsibility of the cadet to make arrangements with the SNSI/NSI within the three-day window for make-ups. Any event, assignment, or test missed as a result of an unexcused absence (i.e. skipping, truancy, etc.) will NOT be allowed to be made-up. Missed uniform days due to excused absences will be made up on the following school day. Re-do Policy: All cadets must recognize that their job this year is to be an engaged, productive student. In this capacity, they must effectively and efficiently use their talents to master material presented in all their courses. Without exception, core subjects take priority over Navy JROTC. Once eligible, Cadets will be given an opportunity to take the promotion exam once at the end of each nine week grading period. There will not be a re-do for promotion exams. If a cadet is absence and it is excused, they will be allowed to take the promotion exam the following school day. Course Credential Students that successfully complete 3 years of NJROTC will receive a certificate of completion. This certifies they are eligible to receive advance rank to enlist in the Military Armed Services. The Army, Navy, and Air Force will award them the rank of E-3 and the Marine Corps will award them the rank of E-2. NJROTC Weekly Routine: Monday: Academics-Cadets are expected to bring notebook and something to write with. Tuesday: Physical Training-Cadets are expected to bring their PT clothes and shoes to school and dress out and participate in the activity. Wednesday: Uniform and Personnel Inspection-Cadets are expected to wear their uniform to school. Thursday: Academics/Military Drill Friday: Physical Training-Cadets will dress out in PT clothing and running shoes.

Please sign the acknowledgements below and return to the Naval Science Instructors. We (Cadet and Parent) acknowledge that we were provided a copy and have read the NJROTC syllabus and the Uniform Rules/Policy and that we understand and will comply with: The requirement to maintain proper personal grooming while in uniform, paying particular attention to hair, jewelry, and uniform maintenance. No VISIBLE body piercings in or out of uniform while in NJROTC. The requirements set forth in this syllabus. The requirements set forth in the Uniform Rules/Policy, specifically the requirement to return uniforms as directed in the Uniform Policy and the responsibility to financially reimburse CHS NJROTC for lost or damaged uniform items. The requirement to come to class prepared with prescribed class supplies. The requirement for completing the Health Risk Screening Questionnaire and Standard Release Form. The requirement to actively participate in PT, defined by wearing the appropriate clothing, maintaining a positive attitude, performing to the best of ones capabilities, and understanding that the only valid excuse for not participating in PT is possession of a signed parent/guardian note the day of the scheduled PT giving reason for non-participation. Also, a phone number must be on the note. The instructor will call to verify with the Parent. If unable to do so, a grade of zero will be assigned until the instructor is able to speak with a parent concerning the note. The requirement for a completed school sports physical signed by a doctor to participate in extracurricular NJROTC activities and perform class PT (within 30 days). The requirement to maintain accurate parent/guardian contact phone numbers. The requirement to respond to phone messages left by the SNSI/NSI at ext.240 (phone messages may be left 24/7). We acknowledge the program s mandatory element of physical training and we agree to comply with the policy of physical training exercises (push-ups, curl-ups, mountain climbers etc.) as a disciplinary tool.
