1 Module Content Module Three Professional Behavior: Respecting Yourself & Others This module will include more in depth information about professional behavior in nursing. The focus will be on respecting yourself and others. Module Content A quiz has been created to help you verify that you know the content of each of this module. Like the other, the quiz for this module has not been made to trick you or negatively affect your course grade. Module Content The quiz has been designed to help reinforce your learning and thus assure that you understand these concepts well. You may retake the module quiz as many times as needed to pass. You are required to get a 100% on the quiz before moving on to the next module. Respect Respecting yourself involves dressing and behaving in a professional manner. Respecting others includes treating each person you meet with dignity and courtesy. Perception is Everything People make judgments about other based on appearance, These decisions about other people s character may not be correct, and However, first impressions do make a difference. 1

2 In clinical settings, students are required to dress professionally, For more specific information about attire can be found in the Student Nurse Handbook under S-III-300. Clinical sites have set up policies for attire to help build patient confidence in nursing care and improve safety. Because we are guests in their facilities, we must abide by their policies. Research Findings Research by Thomas et al (2010) studied the influence of nurses appearance on patients. They found: All subjects rated the nurse with the most body art (piercings and visible tattoo) the least caring, skilled, and knowledgeable. Many of the policies help improve safety such as restricting acrylic nails, long earrings, and requiring hair to be pulled back. This is because: Acrylic nails: increase infection rates Long earrings: may get pulled out Long hair hanging: hair can drop into sterile areas and can cause infections The School of Nursing has been advised of the policies of the various institutions that students go to. A dress code policy that abides by the rules of the various institutions has been created. Students dress is dictated not only by the facilities policy but also by what students are doing in the clinical sites, Appropriate dress for clinical days when direct patient care is not provided in a hospital setting may vary, and Your clinical instructors will let you know if your clinical site has different rules that must be followed. 2

3 students MUST wear to a clinical site: - a lab coat with the SON patch - a name tag - closed toe shoes - long pants or longer skirts - socks or pantyhose students MUST NOT wear: - piercings on the face - shorts or short skirts - blue jeans - tank tops or t-shirts - clothes that show the stomach or chest area students MUST NOT wear: - caps/hats - other attire that may be deemed sloppy and/or inappropriate for a business like setting. students CAN wear their uniform when they go to get information on their patients. When caring directly for patients, students must wear blue scrubs, unless specified by the instructor. In addition, the student may not wear any of the items that were listed in the NOT caring for patient section. Getting accustomed to wearing professional attire may not be easy at first. Overtime, you will feel more comfortable in dressing professionally. This will help build self-esteem and selfconfidence. 3

4 : Overview Everyone wants to feel respected. Respect is a reciprocal feeling. You will not be respected by others unless you show them respect. : Overview Respect is showing consideration for the self-worth of others, Respect is a basic right that we all possess, and As nurses, we must respect all people, whether they are premature babies, child abusers, or sex-offenders. It is not our job to judge others, Our job is to provide the best care for everyone. : Teamwork Nurses cannot provide care alone, We must work effectively as a team, and Team members must show respect for each other for the team to be effective. At school and in the clinical settings, students need to be respectful of instructors, patients, their families, staff, and other students, and Through respect and teamwork, excellent patient care can be provided. : At BSU Respect others at BSU by: - arriving on time to class - being prepared to learn and work - turning off the sound on cell phones during class - paying attention to what others say 4

5 - not interrupting other people, - completing assignments on time, - being polite, patient, and courteous in person, in s, and on social networks - working cooperatively, - ask thoughtful questions during class, - encouraging others to be open with their emotions, - Realizing that everyone has bad days, - Being tolerant of differences of opinion, - Being open to new ideas, and - Knowing that you can learn something from everyone. - Working to find similarities rather than differences, - Looking for the good in people and not the bad, - Being flexible, and - Considering alternative solutions to problems. Respect Outside of the Classroom The internet and social media are places where nursing students must also show respect for classmates, staff, and instructors. 6 / Netiquette It is very important that you realize as a nursing students, your communication needs to be supportive of others on and offline. Don t put online what you wouldn t want to see on the front page of the newspaper. Respecting Yourself By respecting others, they will develop a higher respect for you. You will also develop a higher respect for yourself and know that you are able to work effectively as a nurse. Students Further Responsibilities As with cheating, it is your responsibility to make sure that other students and faculty are treating others with respect. If you see disrespect, it is your responsibility to acknowledge disrespectful. If you are unsure what to do, speak with your instructor or advisor. Summary Respect for others is an expectation of our nursing students, It is students responsibility to show respect for themselves and others, and One way of doing this is to act and dress professionally.
