COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: Army JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) Leadership, Education and Training (LET) 1 to 4 III. TITLE OF TEXTBOOK: JROTC Program of Instruction, Units 1 7 textbook provided, and US Army Curriculum Manager. IV. COURSE OVERVIEW: Junior ROTC is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. The primary mission of JROTC is To motivate young people to be better citizens. This curriculum prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as American citizens. Meanwhile, the program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, while providing instruction and rewarding opportunities that benefit the student, community, and nation. V. INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH: JROTC is taught through a combination of lecture, group discussions, practical exercises, demonstration, hands-on/performance oriented training, and drills. Cadets are graded on effort, as well as actual performance on physical activities such as Cadet Challenge (physical fitness). Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are instructional days and Fridays are sports/physical activity days. Cadets must wear uniforms six times in a nine-week period or quarter. Thursdays are uniform days, and must be worn during the entire school day. VII. EXPECTATIONS: A. DISCIPLINE Cadets are required to follow standard school rules, JROTC published regulations, and classroom rules. B. ATTENDANCE Assignments/work make-ups for excused absences will be handled in accordance with Standard School Policy. C. COURSE EXPECTATION Cadets should be able to demonstrate: 1. A sense of responsibility. 2. Leadership traits applicable to their rank and experience. 3. A desire to excel both mentally and physically. 4. Involvement in school and community activities. 5. Awareness of current local and world events. 6. Acceptable level of curriculum knowledge. 7. Good fellowship, teamwork, and self-discipline. 8. Adherence to Army grooming standards (i.e. shave, haircuts, jewelry, hair color etc. D. HOMEWORK: The bulk of JROTC work will be done in class except for the nine-week grading period essays and occasional assignments. E. GRADING The grading scale is the same as outlined in the Siegel High School passport and will be based on sub-course examinations/quizzes, uniform inspections, physical training, essays/research papers and leadership. Merits/demerits received for each quarter will be reflected in the Leadership portion of the grading. Cadets

3 receive merits for positive behavior and outstanding performance and demerits for misconduct, insubordination, uniform violation etc. Demerits can be removed by performing work/assignments before or after regular school hours. 1. ADDITONAL UNIFORM INFORMATION & REQUIREMENTS 1. Wearing the uniform: A cadet with an excused absence must make up the missed uniform day on the next instructional class day (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday). A cadet who does not wear the uniform but present for school will receive ten demerits each day he/she fails to wear the uniform. This uniform make-up cycle will end on the day before the next uniform inspection, usually Wednesday. If the cadet fails to wear the uniform on one of the make-up days, he or she will receive a grade of zero for that particular inspection.

Failure to wear uniform: Cadets who refuse to wear the uniform, consistently wear it improperly, or miss more than 50% of the semester uniform inspections will be dropped from the JROTC program. 3. Mandatory Forms: All cadets must complete the mandatory county forms to participate in JROTC. They include the Parental/Guardian Release and Statement of Health along with various other forms which make up the Magic five packet. Forms are due back to JROTC Department no later than 25 August Parades: We have one mandatory parade during the year. The event will count as one uniform inspection. The Veteran s Affair Veteran s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, November 18 th, 2017 at the Alvin York VA Medical Center, Murfreesboro, TN. 5. Awards Day: All cadets must attend the annual awards day which will be held on April 12 th, 2018, from at Siegel HS Auditorium. It is mandatory and counts as one uniform inspection. 6. Service Learning Project: All cadets must participate in the annual service learning project for four hours. It is mandatory and it is part of the core curriculum of the program. Our Service Learning Project will be held on November 29 th, Donor collection will take place during the week of November 14 th. 7. Other significant activities a. Adventure Training on the Duck River in Lewisburg, Tn on 15 September, b. Raider Banquet on 10 November, 2017 b. Military Ball on 9 December, c. JROTC Program of Accreditation on 15 March, d. Drill and Rifle Banquet on 6 April, e. Fun Night on 20 April, f. Farewell Picnic on 5 May, Portfolio: All cadets will create and maintain a portfolio that contains and organized collection of work based on accomplishments, personality, goals and aspirations. The portfolio will provide insight and information on the cadet s personal achievements and growth over time. G. RANK: Promotion to the next higher grade will not be automatic. All promotions will be earned by performance in assigned position, attitude and conduct. Cadets in the rank of Sergeant and above must also demonstrate their competence at a promotion board held by senior cadets. School grades are also very important in this process. Our goal is to place only those cadets with a GPA of 3.0 or above in key leadership/staff positions. Cadets may be reduced in rank for both in-school and out-of-school conduct.

5 VIII. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: The following JROTC activities are available to cadets with at least a 2.0 grade point average who desire to participate. 1. Raiders - Training begins on August 8 th and will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:15am and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30pm. Cadets will participate in the following four competitions: September 9 th at Smyrna HS, September 23rd at Oakland HS, October 14 th at Siegel HS, and 28 Oct at Riverdale HS. 2. Color Guard Training begins on November 1 st and will be held at 06:15 am on Wednesdays. Cadets will participate in the following three competitions: December 2nd and February 17 th in Chattanooga, TN and March 3rd h in McMinnville, TN. 3. Drill Team - Training begins on November 1 st and will be held at 6am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cadets will participate in the following three competitions: December 2nd and February 17 th in Chattanooga, TN and March 3rd h in McMinnville, TN. 4. Rifle Team - Training begins on November 1 st and will be held at 3:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Cadets will participate in the following five matches at the county level: December 7 th, January 18 th, February 1 st and 22nd and March 8 th.
