1 Note: We ARE NOT Military Recruiters and there is NO military commitment. Stebbins High School Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) 1900 Harshman Rd, Riverside, OH Aerospace 100 Course Syllabus Congratulations on signing up for Air Force JROTC! The mission of JROTC is develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community (we do not recruit you to join the military). We challenge you to become more disciplined, taking on leadership roles and improving your physical fitness. Our program is challenging but one of the most rewarding at Stebbins! Some of our highlight from last year include: five of our graduates earned over $150,000 in scholarships and one of our many field trips took us to Washington, D.C.! We also offer plenty of extra activities and events to help you meet new people in a safe environment. No matter how active you are in the program, every student builds a computer generated resume that can help you prepare for life after high school. Thanks again for signing up and we look forward to working with you! The grading system is as follows: - 40%: Aerospace Sciences (AS): Within AS, your grade will be based on your work in the classroom, written and performance tests/quizzes and participation in Drill & Ceremonies. - 40%: Leadership Education (LE): Within this forty percent, you will be graded on the following areas: o Academics: written tests and quizzes o Wear of the Uniform (required weekly) o Community Service participation - 20% Health and Wellness: expectations defined below 1
2 Class Schedule - Mon: Alternating schedule one week is Aerospace Science and the other week is Leadership Education - Tues: Blue Uniform Inspection and Drill - Wed/Thurs: Alternating schedule one week is Aerospace Science and the other week is Leadership Education - Fri: Wellness (physical training), cadets wear issued shorts and t-shirt LE Course: Traditions, Wellness and Foundations of Citizenship (Chapters 1-5) Course Description: The Leadership Education I (LE-I) intended for students who are entering the AFJROTC program and beginning their high school studies. It will introduce cadets to history, organization, mission, traditions, goals, and objectives of JROTC for all services. It introduces key military customs and courtesies, how to project a positive attitude, and examines the principles of ethical and moral behavior. It provides strategies for effective note taking and study skills for academic success. Lessons will cover how to be emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy. AS Course: A Journey into Aviation History (Units 1-3) Course Description: This is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomy and space exploration history. Course: Health and Wellness (Physical Fitness) Course Description: The objective of the Wellness/PT Program is to motivate cadets to lead healthy, active lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. Based on individual ability, cadets will participate in a number of individual and group exercises, strength training and the Presidential Fitness Challenge. Grades will be based on proper uniform wear, participation and a quarterly fitness test. Course: Drill and Ceremonies Course Description: The Drill and Ceremonies class provides an introduction to basic military drill movements. The course concentrates on the elements of military drill, and describes individual and group precision movements, procedures for saluting, ceremonies, and development of the command voice. Though each class will follow an established lesson plan, most of the work will be hands-on. Participation in Physical Training and Drill Students will also complete and return a Wellness Program Participation/Consent Form with Health Screening Questionnaire before engaging in physical activities. Use this form to notify JROTC Staff if a student has a chronic medical condition or disability that may require special care or emergency treatment. Additionally, students who wish to not participate in Drill and Physical Training will be excused if a doctor s note is on file, within 3 school days of the illness and/or the student has seen the nurse for an unexpected illness. Student Accommodations Students are requested to see the instructor to discuss accommodations for physical and medical disabilities. accommodations will be provided for students religious beliefs, observations and practices. Reasonable Uniform Wear Students are issued the same uniform (no cost to you) items as active duty Air Force members and required to follow similar uniform wear standards. Proper uniform wear is a must as you represent yourself, Stebbins High School and Air Force JROTC. Students cannot pass the course without wearing the uniform. Guidelines: - If a student is absent on the designated uniform day, they are required to wear it the next day they return to school. If not, students will receive a zero along with one of the consequences listed below. - Students that forget/fail to wear the uniform on the designated day, can wear it the next day for half credit (to include deductions for infractions). - My uniform is too small is not a valid reason for not wearing the uniform. Students are responsible for notifying staff of ill-fitting uniforms prior to uniform day and will be exempted while their uniform is altered or replaced. Consequences: Failure to wear the uniform or wear it properly will result in the following actions being taken: - 1st Offense: call parent, student will serve a JROTC detention on Tues or Thur in 30 or 60 minutes depending on the severity of offense. 2
3 - 2nd Offense: call parent, student will be recommended for school detention - 3rd Offense: call parent, student will be recommended for AIM (in school suspension) - 4th Offense: call parent, cadet will be dis-enrolled from JROTC and placed in another course. No academic credit will be given! * Parents may be called and asked to bring students a change of clothing if the issue is serious. Common Problems: Items listed below are not all-inclusive. Students are encouraged to ask an instructor for clarification before making changes. - My uniform is at the dry cleaners. - Not wearing hat when outside - Waiting until JROTC class period to comply with uniform standards - Failing to shave (properly trimmed mustaches and sideburns are ok). - Refusal or improper haircuts ( buzz cuts are not required) - Piercings: Males aren t permitted to wear any type of visible piercing while in uniform (Tues or Fri). Visible piercing = zero for uniform credit and students may be required to change. Females are permitted to wear one pair of earrings (in the lower ear lobe only) in uniform. Cartilage piercings and nose piercings are not permitted. - Unnatural hair colors i.e. red, green - Unauthorized fingernail polish i.e. neon colors, stripes, designs etc. - Dirty/soiled uniforms - Wearing unauthorized items i.e. wrong sock color etc. Uniform Care Your student will be issued an AFJROTC uniform that costs. You should be aware of the following information before the uniform is issued: COST: All items are issued at no cost to you or the student. The student and you are responsible for all items issued and will be responsible for the cost to replace damaged or lost items. Lost or missing items must be paid for before a new item will be issued. DAMAGED/WORN ITEMS: Efforts are made to ensure that students receive items in good repair. If an item is damaged because of wear (using reasonable care), it will be replaced at no cost to the student. CLEANING: The student is responsible for the cleaning of uniforms. The light blue, short-sleeve shirt can be machine washed and dried (permanent press cycle recommended). All dark blue items (trousers/slacks, service coat, light weight jacket, garrison cap, and tie/neck tab) must be dry cleaned. Machine washing these items can damage the material. Ironing of these items can also damage the material. You will be responsible for the cost to replace damaged items. Use a damp towel to clean minor spills etc. ALTERATIONS: The Air Force pays for all required alterations to the uniform. Parents/ students will not attempt to sew or make changes to the uniform. If the clothing item no longer fits, dry clean the item and return it for an exchange. HAND RECEIPT: Once all items are issued, your student will be issued a receipt for all items provided and the cost of the item should it be damaged or lost. Both the student and you are required to sign and return the receipt. Only items accountable by the Air Force will be listed on this receipt. However, you are still responsible for the cost to replace damaged or lost items that are not listed on the hand receipt (belts, buckles, shoes, name tags, insignia, ties/neck tabs, etc.). RETURN OF UNIFORM: Once your student is no longer enrolled in AFJROTC (graduation, dropped class, etc.), all uniform items must be returned. **All items must be dry cleaned and returned in the cleaning company s plastic bag, on hangers, with the cleaning tags attached. Uniforms will not be accepted unless they have been dry cleaned. DEBTS: Failure to turn in uniform items will result in a debt being placed on the student account and potentially delaying the release of transcripts and diploma. All student debt obligations must be cleared before the end of the semester in which they were incurred. Obligations may include: lost or damaged textbooks and uniforms not returned. Students will not be issued a replacement textbook and/or uniform until the obligation has been cleared. Students who owe for obligations will not receive grade reports of any kind until all obligations have been cleared through the main office. Community Service Students are required to complete 5 hours of community service (through JROTC or personal opportunities) each quarter. JROTC offers numerous activities to meet or exceed the goal. Color Guard for the school district, sporting events and assisting with events such as Making Strides against Cancer to name a few. Co-Curricular Activities Co-curricular activities add interest, prestige, and educational opportunity and a chance work with others at Stebbins other schools. Color Guards for sporting events and parade, Orienteering (using a map and compass), Cyber Patriot and Drill Team. Every cadet is encouraged to participate in at least one of these activities. Additional information can be found on our website. 3
4 Assignment Policy All assignments are completed in class. Complete assignments may be turned in one day late, but will receive a one-letter grade reduction. Assignments submitted more than one day late will receive half credit. Pop quizzes may be given at any time by the instructor. Textbooks will not be issued, but will be available in hard copy in the classroom. Hard copy textbooks will not be removed from the classroom at any time. Attendance Attendance will be taken every day at the beginning of the class period. Students absent or tardy will be recorded in Progress Book. Students who are tardy will be subject to the school disciplinary procedures as described in the Student Handbook. However, illness and emergencies do occur. In such cases, students should notify the teacher, prior to the absence (if possible) or upon return, of the reason for the absence and turn in the proper excuse to the attendance office. Make-Up Work Procedure for Absences Students are provided an opportunity to make up missed assignments and/or tests for excused absences, including AIM and Out of School Suspension (first suspension only). However, it is the student s responsibility to make arrangements and/or complete all missed work. If a student is absent, he or she is allowed to complete the missed work for credit (usually) within 3 days. Academic Freedom Students and instructors have the right to express his or her point of view and the responsibility to respect the points of view of the instructor and other students.
