5 33 RD ANNUAL ADVANCES IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES: New Directions for Primary Care The, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco presents its annual symposium on Advances in Infectious Diseases. Now marking its 33 rd year, this conference emphasizes state-of-the-art therapy for patients with infectious diseases and also provides reviews of new developments. TARGET AUDIENCE This educational activity is intended for internists, family physicians, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists, who are involved in the care of patients with infectious diseases. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Based on discussions with UCSF faculty and practicing physicians at other institutions, the topics were chosen based on physician-identified need for additional practicebased knowledge. All topics pertain to current clinical issues relevant to patient health outcomes. An attendee completing this course should be able to: Apply current approaches to the management of patients with infectious diseases, with emphasis on correct diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment regimens Appropriately administer newer antibiotics Effectively manage common infections seen in the outpatient setting, including upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, dermatologic infections, and diarrhea Improve management of patients with common central nervous system infections Improve clinical assessment of infectious considerations with certain groups at special risk, including those with HIV and diabetes Increase competence relevant to the emergence of drug-resistant organisms is shaping therapy of common problems such as community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases Interpret and apply up-to-date information on less common infections in the U.S., including tuberculosis and infections in travelers Hilton San Francisco Financial District Hotel April 25-27, 2012 ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 19 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. Pharmacy: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Family Physicians: Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA category 1 credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
