2 DESCRIPTION OBJECTIVES L ung disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease and cancer and is responsible for one in ten deaths. Lung diseases, excluding lung cancer, caused an estimated 236,000 deaths in And COPD alone caused 135,000 deaths in Today more than 52 million Americans are living with chronic lung disease such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The economic cost of asthma, COPD, and pneumonia was $106 billion in 2009 $81 billion in direct health expenditures and $21 billion in indirect cost of mortality.
