2 LEARNING GAP There is clearly a gap in dermatologic diagnostic and therapeutic skills when considering the primary care physician population as a whole. It is recognized that many important dermatologic topics are inadequately taught during both medical school and postgraduate education. Repeated studies of skills assessments demonstrate an unequivocal lack of core cognitive and surgical dermatological skills among those delivering primary care. Physicians must also be prepared as the timeline for implementation of ICD-10-CM is approaching, and be aware of the ICD-10-CM requirements for documentation and the general principles of medical record documentation and why it is important. This conference will review diagnostic and therapeutic information relating to skin disease in a didactic manner, accomplished by a series of medically-oriented talks followed by a series of surgically-oriented talks, revolving around high volume/high risk subjects. The program will include hands on diagnostic training involving dermatoscopy, a relatively easy technique which greatly enhances diagnostic skills for skin tumors, now reaching epidemic proportions in the U.S. As an added bonus, the conference content will include information to assist the practitioner in understanding practice goals for ICD-10-CM implementation, as well as the importance of medical record documentation as it applies to coding. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed for healthcare professionals including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners specializing in Internal Medicine, Family or General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pediatrics/Adolescent Medicine. Other healthcare professionals practicing in a primary care environment or needing additional information for primary treatment in a specialty environment may find this activity beneficial to their patient s outcomes. 3 CONFERENCE CHAIR Theodore Rosen, MD, is Professor of Dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Aside from his faculty position, he serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and is the immediate past Vice-President of the Texas Dermatological Society. He is a past-president of the Houston Dermatological Society and prior Chairman of the Dermatology Section of the Southern Medical Association. He is on the editorial boards of PubMed indexed journals and Associate Editor of Dermatology Online Journal. Dr. Rosen has written over 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, authored 3 medical textbooks, and two dozen textbook chapters. He is co-author/editor of a major international textbook on the management of cutaneous neoplasia. Dr. Rosen has lectured to local, state, regional, national and international audiences. He has also served as a visiting professor at over 75 American and foreign universities and teaching hospitals. DISTINGUISHED FACULTY Moise L. Levy, MD, is faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and is Chief of Dermatology Service at Texas Children s Hospital. Dr. Levy has won teaching awards from the medical students and pediatric residents at Baylor. Under his leadership, the pediatric dermatology service grew into one of the top programs in the U.S. He has been Chairman of the Dermatology Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, was past President of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Archives of Dermatology. Dr. Levy holds board certifications in pediatrics, dermatology, and pediatric dermatology. The information learned from this conference will be of tremendous use in my daily medical practice. His professional interests include general pediatric skin diseases, inherited skin disorders, vascular birthmarks, and clinical research activities. He has been a co-director of the vascular anomalies group at TCH for several years and began the laser program at TCH for the treatment of vascular birthmarks. Dr. Levy has authored or co-authored over 100 journal articles and textbook chapters, and is a reviewer for multiple scientific journals. He often lectures at local, national, and international meetings. Ida Francesca Orengo, MD, is Director of the Mohs Surgery Center, Professor, Department of Dermatology, and Assistant Professor of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include cutaneous oncology, Mohs micrographic surgery, and pigmented skin disorders. She stays incredibly involved in both academic and non-academic positions, and is part of several professional societies and has numerous publications. She s given over 50 lectures worldwide and is particularly interested in research on skin cancer, photobiology, and dietary modification. Andrea C. Day, RHIT, CCS-P, obtained her certification as a Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based in November 2002, and her RHIT (Registered Health Information Technologist) credentials through AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association), of which she is also a member. Currently the owner of Alabama Physician Services, LLC, she provides physician education and training pertaining to specialties, as well as daily billing and collection operations for physician practices. She has worked as a Practice Administrator and billing consultant for physicians of multiple specialties for the past 17 years, and has expertise in auditing and coding for physician offices. Ms. Day has been a speaker for the Greater North Alabama Professional Coders Chapter, Wallace State Community College, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) student forum. She has additionally been an instructor for Compliance Training and Evaluation and Management Documentation for physician practices, as well as an instructor on Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and transcription.
