2 Conference Overview As a community of multidisciplinary practitioners, we all share the common goal of achieving wound care success. Each day, we follow a path towards that goal, our own yellow brick road so to speak. Sometimes the road signs are clear in directing our way, other times we may get off track given the many challenges that we face in today s healthcare environment and within our individual work settings. Of the many tools that we have to guide our way, pursing high quality education related to the evolving world of wound management can provide our best compass. This fall, the Advanced Wound Healing and Lymphedema Center at Allegheny General Hospital will once again sponsor a full day of comprehensive education provided by nationally renowned and leading experts in the field. Current concepts and interventions will be explored and the event will be geared towards a diverse audience including physicians, podiatrists, nurses, physical therapists and others involved in the care of patients with chronic wounds. Numerous vendors representing the latest therapies will also be on hand to share their knowledge. Join us and learn how to navigate your way to success! Conference Objectives At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: n Verbalize the importance of evaluating the patient as a whole in developing wound care goals and an effective treatment plan. n Identify key components of a comprehensive wound assessment that includes a thorough review of pertinent medical history, signs and symptoms and all objective tests and measures. n Describe evidence supporting negative pressure wound therapy, parameters and rationale for choosing this modality in wound care treatment n Recognize normal age-related (gerontodermatogical) skin types n Assess impact of gerontodermatological changes on wound healing n Identify significant factors that impact non-healing diabetic foot wounds and verbalize advanced care practice required to treat diabetic foot wounds n Describe state-of-the-art therapies for chronic wounds and emerging trends on the horizon for wound care best practice n Relate the effect of exercise on each of the typical wound diagnoses (arterial, venous, diabetic, neuropathic) n State the indications and contraindications of exercise for each wound population n Review basic pathophysiology associated with lymphatic filariasis (LF) n Appreciate unique lymphedema stages associated with LF n Demonstrate an understanding of the negative impact of bioburden and its role in delayed or non-healing of open wounds. n Describe current treatment interventions that are available to wound care practitioners that are designed to identify and reduce the harmful effects of bacteria.
