1 26TH ANNUAL EMERGENCY MEDICINE FOR RURAL HOSPITALS A PROGRAM FOR PHYSICIANS AND NURSES FRIDAY EVENING TO SUNDAY January 22-24, 2010 COURSE OVERVIEW This program is designed for physicians and nurses in rural hospitals. Through a combination of plenary lectures, breakout sessions and small group workshops, participants will review current issues in management of patients presenting to rural emergency departments. NOTE Small group workshops have limited registration. REGISTER EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT. COURSE OBJECTIVES To provide nurses and doctors with an update on the management of urgent conditions presenting special challenges in the rural emergency department. Assessment, investigation and treatment appropriate to the rural setting will be covered. Having a plan in place can change a dangerous and uncomfortable situation into one that is managed with reasonable calm and safety for the patient and the staff. Although the focus of the GROUP A workshops is for the identified health professionals, other disciplines are welcome to attend. GROUP B workshops are restricted to the identified health discipline group. Sessions designed for PHYSICIANS: A1-A16 and B1-B8 Sessions designed for NURSES: A12-A20 and B6-B11 Due to the limited capacity and/or hands-on component of certain workshops, participants will be assigned to a maximum of two of the workshops in GROUP B. Attendance will be strictly monitored. Priority will be given to those registering early. The remainder of sessions assigned will be from your GROUP A choices. Most breakouts will be held at the Banff Park Lodge, although some procedure-based small group workshops will be held at the Mineral Springs Hospital next to the hotel. GROUP A A1. Non-invasive Ventilation: The Use of CPAP Modality for Pulmonary Edema and COPD Luc Berthiaume Understand when and how to use CPAP and when definitely not to use it. A3. Joint Injections Simplified Eric Babins Following a brief overview of indications for joint injections and aspiration, participants will have a practical session. A4. Clinical Examination of Soft Tissue Injuries of the Shoulder Greg Buchko This workshop will help non-specialist physicians develop skills to examine and diagnose shoulder injuries. A5. Novel Uses for Ultrasound Kyle McLaughlin Take bedside ultrasound to the next level. In this lecture, learn about advanced ultrasound techniques to complement your practice. A6. Weathering the Perfect Storm: Living While Practicing Emergency Medicine Marc Cherniwchan This interactive workshop is designed to help participants understand the root reasons for stress in the practice of Emergency Medicine in the rural setting and to explore practical, workable ways of managing family and personal life while doing this work long-term. A7. Clinical Clearance of the C-Spine Ian Stiell Research-based practical advice for the rural GP s approach to C-Spine issues.

After the ABCs: What Sick Kids Teach Us About Health and Care Vincent Hanlon In this session we ll consider the nature of brief therapeutic alliances, how we communicate with children and remind ourselves of the importance of name, touch and being present. A11. Approach to Three Views of the Abdomen Stefan Przybojewski How to sharpen your interpretation skills with plain film of the adbomen. A12. Vomiting and Diarrhea Care Pathway (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) David Johnson A new protocol for pediatrics. A13. Challenges of Transport from Remote Rural Communities (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) Trina Larsen Soles This session will discuss case presentations highlighting difficult transport situations involving trauma, medical and obstetric/neonatal emergencies. A14. Adolescent Substance Abuse (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) Samuel Chang This workshop will focus on the challenge of managing the adolescent s foray into substance abuse. A15. Evidence-based Health Tips for MDs and RNs (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) PFSP Physician TBA This session will explore six proven strategies for staying healthy while working in a pressured clinical (ER) environment. A16. Differentiating the 3Ds (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) Kelly McDonald & Colin Powell Identifying depression, delirium, and dementia why bother? A17. Understanding the Chest Drainage Tube and Pleur-Evac System (NURSE FOCUS) Anthony Falvi Overview of theory and management of chest drainage system. A18. Respiratory Medication Devices (NURSE FOCUS) Kathy Courtney Up to 91% of patients use their Asthma and COPD medications incorrectly. This session will help practitioners teach the patient and/or parent to administer respiratory medication effectively, enabling the patient towards self management of the disease. A19. Emergency Deliveries in the Rural Emergency Room (NURSE FOCUS) Leslie Perry Overview of vaginal delivery, shoulder dystocia and breech. A20. Rodeos, Ranches, and Recreation (NURSE FOCUS) Theresa Pasquotti This session will discuss trauma injuries from large animal interactions on the farm/ranch, rodeos and the road ; patterns of injury, new information on trauma care & treatment; and some transport considerations. Intraosseous Access: New Tools to Help with an Old Skill (PHYSICIAN ONLY) Steven Douglas & Katharine Smart Practice your IO needle insertion techniques. Become familiar with the new drills available, making the procedure very quick, very simple and applicable to a much wider age range of patients from pediatric to adults. B2. Emergency Ophthalmology Procedures (PHYSICIAN ONLY) Gordon Douglas Overview of common eye emergencies and practical skill development for ocular examination and treatment including slit lamp. B3. Plastic Surgery Techniques in the Rural ER Advanced Suturing Skills (PHYSICIAN ONLY) Thomas Sinclair Common plastic surgery problems seen in the ER and tips on how to treat them. B4. Procedural Critical Skills (PHYSICIAN ONLY) Wayne Sefcik & Cathie Belenky This session will comprise stations focusing on lumbar puncture, needle decompression, and insertion of chest tubes. B5. Airway Management (PHYSICIAN ONLY) Ian Wishart & Alexis Mageau This session will comprise stations focusing on assessment of the airway (regular versus difficult), in adults and children, adjuncts for difficult airway (Lighted Stylet, Bougie, LMA) and RSI intubation controversies. B6. Basic Suturing Techniques for the Rural Practitioner (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) Mort Doran This session will provide a practical overview and demonstration of basic suturing. B7. STARS Simulator (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) David Lendrum, Chad Hegge & Bob Odney The human patient simulator replicates complex medical and traumatic problems, offering health practitioners an opportunity to practice their reactions and skills. Participate in 2 short case scenarios with this advanced technology that simulates an emergency room.

Pediatric Human Patient Simulator (MULTI-DISCIPLINARY FOCUS) Tanuja Kodeeswaran & Connie Abrey The pediatric patient simulator helps healthcare professionals to develop and enhance the skills required to provide medical assessment and treatment of children. In this workshop, participants will work through common emergency pediatric presentations in real time, using an advanced simulator. B9. Procedural Skills for Managing Trauma Patients (NURSE ONLY) Thora Barnes, Laura Fowler, Patricia Morkin & Theresa Pasquotti Demonstration and hands-on experience with pelvic binder, spinal immobilization, fluid warmer and Intraosseous. B10. Basic ECG Interpretation (NURSE ONLY) NOTE: DOUBLE SESSION (TWO 50 MINUTE TIME SLOTS) Angela Hope Examine elevation and depression of ST segment and new onset Bundle Branch Block and what it means; distinguish the difference between inferior vs anterior and the clinical implications. B11. Advanced ECG Interpretation (NURSE ONLY) NOTE: DOUBLE SESSION (TWO 50 MINUTE TIME SLOTS) Susan Bengivingo Examine axis deviation and bundle branch block and which leads are involved; discussion of patient stratification in ACS and administration of fibrolytics in the rural ER. Reserve at the Banff Park Lodge ( ) by December 23, 2009 to receive the conference rate of $115 per night (plus applicable taxes) at the Lodge or $95 per night at the sister hotel, Bow View Lodge. REIMBURSEMENT OF REGISTRATION FEES Physicians who are members of the Alberta Medical Association may be eligible for reimbursement of registration fees and expenses to attend CME courses from a fund administered by the AMA.
