MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In our chaotic world, we often forget the benefit and importance of live, face-to-face exchanges with others from the IP&C community; which brings me to the IPAC Canada 2018 National Conference, Climbing Mountains Pathways to Discovery. As we embark on another national conference, we come together to share ideas, gain knowledge and tips, and plan to create a better future for our patients and professional-selves. Finding time, support, and funds to attend a national conference can be very challenging; however there s so much to gain by participating. The system is changing at all levels, impacting each of us in some way. In the current healthcare environment where we Climb Mountains regularly, we re also embarking on groundbreaking and massive reorganizations, taking us down Pathways to Discovery, to grow into more efficient, safer organizations. As IPAC Canada continues to work on establishing new and stronger strategic partnerships, so should you at the national conference. It s at these times we must develop relationships and strengthen bonds to continue to grow and move forward. Globally, many annual conferences offer networking and learning opportunities. However, no other is like ours, where you re caught in a swell with others who share your focus; you access and absorb new information and advice; and meet old friends while making new. You ll leave recharged, teeming with new ideas. The conference planning committee has labored tirelessly on a program that takes you on a journey, opens your mind and heart, promotes growth, and hopefully even makes you laugh. It features some of our own experts as well as internationally lauded speakers to help us along our Pathways to Discovery. There will be practical, applicable knowledge/principles shared, as well as concepts to make you reach beyond your limits. Thank you Committee, for your work to help each of us. At the national conference we converge to participate in educational opportunities, meet new colleagues and network, and have fun!! Don t forget to take time to rejuvenate yourself and join the que, both May 29! And of course visit the Exhibit Hall (you might want to pack light to take things home). Welcome to Banff! Hope to see you at the Conference! Molly Blake RN BN MHS CIC, President, IPAC Canada 1

4 MESSAGE FROM THE 2018 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM COMMITTEE On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 IPAC Canada National Conference. What a wonderful opportunity it is to have our Conference at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity surrounded by the inspiring scenery of the Canadian Rockies! Amid the many vistas and the variety of activities, speakers and venues planned for the conference, the Banff Centre provides an ideal setting to explore this year s theme Climbing Mountains, Pathways to Discovery. As with any major mountain expedition, bringing an idea to fruition and creating meaningful and memorable experiences requires the vision, expertise and experience of many individuals. Because of these individuals contributions and dedicated planning, the various facets of this conference provide many pathways for conference attendees to explore and create their own personal mountain adventures. Thank you to our colleagues from Canada and around the world who started their mountain adventure early and worked hard to prepare their abstracts, oral and poster presentations to share their own paths of discovery through research and quality improvement initiatives. We also extend our appreciation to the many speakers who have agreed to join us on our journey, sharing their valuable knowledge and insights that will assist us in unearthing new ideas and building our own expertise. As you walk along the mountain trails, be sure to network with those you meet along the way. Laugh and share your own adventure stories with the lessons you learned through trials, tribulations, perseverance and through your successes. This year s conference is hosted by the IPAC Southern Alberta Chapter who have worked diligently to organize a warm and welcoming meet and greet. Our sincere thanks to members of both Northern and Southern Alberta Chapters who have joined together to fill the many volunteer roles that help make our conference run smoothly. No journey is complete without making sure we have the right equipment. We give a big shout out from the mountain top to our sponsors and industry partners who support our conference in so many ways. We appreciate the opportunities to learn about the latest technologies and products, and their help identifying the equipment needed on our journeys. Finally, as the Scientific Program Committee Chair, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the committee members for their dedication, expertise, practice wisdom, and advice that thoughtfully informed the planning of the conference program. It has been a pleasure to work with you over the many months since we started meeting in the fall of We hope you are inspired by the many panoramas you encounter as you wander the mountain paths at this conference. Let your discovery of new ideas and the affirmation of your skills edify you and stir in you dreams of new adventures. In the words of Lori Lansens from The Mountain Story, the climb speaks to our character but the view, I think, to our souls. 11 C O N F E R E N C E Objectives IPAC Canada invites you to immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains in Banff, Alberta. This is an ideal place to embark on paths of discovery surrounded by spectacular scenery, towering peaks and alpine lakes. The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is nestled in the heart of a UNESCO world heritage site and Canada s first national park, and its goal is to provide an atmosphere that inspires creativity and innovation. All Infection Prevention and Control Professionals (ICPs) and healthcare providers are invited to set up base camp and prepare for a journey that will have us traversing established pathways, belaying with our colleagues and navigating through crevasses on a stimulating journey that will lead us to the summit. Every adventure starts with an idea or dream that is nurtured and reworked until it becomes reality. All mountain landscapes hold stories: the ones we read, the ones we dream, and the ones we create (The Alpinist, April 1, 2010). The conference will bring both expert and novice ICPs, dynamic speakers and influential stakeholders together through networking, sharing of expertise, and the desire to pursue knowledge to forge ahead and realize our aspirations in infection prevention and control. As on any journey or adventure ICPs encounter challenges and obstacles in practice that can be daunting, frustrating and sometimes overwhelming. Our keynote speaker will explore such experiences and provide inspiring perspectives that will help us to embrace and overcome such challenges and obstacles, helping us to achieve our professional goals and dreams. Before starting our official journey, prepare to check your equipment and supplies by attending the preconference day which will offer three exciting learning pathways: explore the slippery slopes of disinfection, discover expeditions in construction, and address the challenges of infection prevention and control in Aboriginal health. These sessions are primed to look at existing and future trends. The climb to the summit begins when we transition into the full conference program: explore infection control in operating and procedure rooms, continuing care, care in the community, and prehospital service. Discuss how to manage those complex problems we all LANGUAGE OF THE CONFERENCE The language of the conference is English. CONFERENCE DRESS CODE All education sessions and meetings: Casual Special Events: Casual encounter from time to time in our practice. Make sure to pick up tips for teaching and communicating key messages or engaging physicians through the use of simulation. While adventures in infection prevention and control are exciting, the going can get tough, and we can feel weary or discouraged. Sometimes we need to stop, take in the view and have a bit of nourishment. Discover opportunities during the conference to reflect, rejuvenate, and reengage with your goals and aspirations. As Sir Edmund Hillary said, It s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. It is not always the grand adventures that transform. A nugget of wisdom, a bit of information, or a new contact can start an avalanche that has a resounding impact. Objectives for the 2018 conference are to: 1. Inspire the discovery of new ideas and innovations to advance and transform knowledge into infection prevention and control practice. Imagine how embarking on new adventures and journeys will turn into realities. 2. Challenge our knowledge and understanding of existing practices as we climb to new heights, continuing to build and refine our skills along with practices as we explore the complex challenges and issues across the various healthcare sectors 3. Strengthen foundations that provide us with core knowledge and skills that are used on a daily basis. Whether treading on familiar ground, or navigating new paths, we need to always be prepared, paying attention to ourselves as health providers, making sure our resources are current and reflect best practices, so we are prepared for the unexpected. 4. Provide opportunities to network, share stories and build collaborations through experience, lessons learned, and successes realized. 5. Promote awareness of new approaches, new technologies, products, resources and tools that can assist us in our professional endeavours. 6. Showcase IPAC Canada s commitment to serve as a pre-eminent source of infection prevention and control expertise in Canada. 9

20 Honourary M E M B E R Anne Bialachowski IPAC Canada is pleased to bestow Honourary Membership on Anne Bialachowski RN BN MS CIC. Since joining IPAC Canada in 1998, Anne has been an extraordinary asset to our association in many roles. Her service to the association and colleagues has been inspiring and continues to this day. Anne has been deeply involved in her home chapter IPAC Central Southern Chapter (previously known as IPAC HANDIC), serving in key positions of Treasurer, Education Coordinator, President-elect and President between 1999 and In 2010, Anne became President of the (then) Community and Hospital Infection Control Association Canada. During her tenure she represented the organization with the Canadian Foundation for Infectious Diseases in the development of what became the first Hill Day, cemented an excellent working relationship with the Public Health Agency of Canada, and forged collegial relationships with many external partners and organizations. Anne has authored several journal articles and provided abstracts for oral presentations at a variety of conferences. She was lead author in a series of articles for the Canadian Journal of Infection Control, introducing and outlining the utility of the Infection Control Audit Toolkit. Having been intimately involved in the development of the Toolkit, she was well placed to share the work broadly with membership through these user-oriented articles. Anne has devoted time to the national conference Scientific Program Committee for the 2012, 2015 and 2016 national conferences. At the same time she was a member of the APIC Core Competencies Committee and began her work with the IPAC Canada Endorsement Review Committee. Not one to rest on her laurels, Anne followed these activities by becoming a main developer of the Mentor Program for IPAC Canada and a developer and Chair of the Learning Repository Depository. As a testament to the respect that she garners in her professional life, Anne was appointed in 2003 to the Ontario SARS Scientific Committee by the Chief Medical Officer of Health in Ontario. She was the first Network Coordinator to develop a Regional Infection Control Network in Central South Ontario and spent four years building that program while participating in numerous regional committees and providing invaluable consultation across her expansive network. In her current professional life, Anne is the Manager of Infection Prevention and Control at St. Joseph s Healthcare in Hamilton. Among numerous efforts, she has been involved in initiatives intended to reduce catheter associated urinary tract infections, sepsis and central line blood stream infections. She oversaw the construction of a new Mental Health Hospital as well as a new Surgical Centre. She was instrumental in ensuring appropriate IPAC standards were met in the remediation of a major flood that impacted several areas of her hospital and has developed a formal IPAC rotation program for Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology residents, nursing students and advanced degree candidates. Anne continues her work as the IPAC Canada representative on the CSA Perioperative Safety Committee and sits on the Ontario Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee. In the words of one of her nominators: In our professional lives, we seldom have opportunities to recognize the work of exemplary colleagues. Anne is a natural leader with great charisma who turned her professional path to the world of infection prevention and control and we are so much richer for her contributions. This is a person who possesses unusual intelligence, confidence, professional commitment and razor-sharp wit. Anne is an exemplary professional and an extraordinary member of IPAC Canada. Recognition of Anne s contributions will take place at the Opening Ceremonies, Sunday, May

22 Moira Walker MEMORIAL AWARD FOR INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Barbara Catt & Zahir Hirji Awarded for their project: Building Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Capacity in Kenya Their journey began with a trip by the Infection Control Practitioner (ICP), Loyce Khungi at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Nairobi, Kenya who came to Toronto after registering for the inclass Centennial introductory, IPAC course. Zahir, as faculty within the corse was asked by the Nursing Administrator of AKUH to watch over Loyce. This created a relationship with the hospital and a request for IPAC support in The purpose of the trip was to work with the IPAC Department to ensure they would be ready for an Accreditation Survey by the Joint Commission. During a mock survey, IPAC was identified as a gap. A successful two week visit involved: basic infection control training for 30% of the nursing staff education sessions with the surgical units and ICU meeting with all departments who liaised/collaborated with that IPAC a very eye opening visit to the kitchen The visit resulted in the hospital accreditation which was in The trip in 2012 highlighted the need for IPAC resources in Kenya. By 2016 the Director of Nursing at AKUH-Nairobi moved to the Aga Khan School of Nursing where she was able to secure the opportunity to offer a basic IPAC course. Together with the assistance of the AKUH Medical Director with IPAC, the local ICP, Loyce, Barb and Zahir developed the program content for a basic course. The course was offered in two modules of three weeks. Barb and Zahir went to teach the second module. They taught for two weeks with the students getting a third week with the Medical Director and the local ICP. Topics covered included a review of materials covered in module 1 such as standard precautions and transmission based precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, outbreak management, microbiology, surveillance and epidemiology. It was important to review the original material to ensure maximum learning for the students. The students reported their projects completed during the time between module 1 and module 2. Additional material included a review of the literature, device related infections, surgical site infections, leadership and patient safety. The program included opportunities for tours of different areas of AKUH-Nairobi to enhance the students learning. Barb and Zahir secured their own funding for one flight with the gracious support of vendor partners and their local chapter IPAC-GTA. IPAC-GTA also provided swag that Barb and Zahir were able to distribute to the students. In total, there were 16 nurses from across Kenya plus one student, who travelled 24 hours by bus from the border of Uganda to learn about infection control. Each nurse participant has been identified as the ICP within their local organization. Many of the students projects consisted of getting 24 hours of running water to the hospital. Barb and Zahir have stated: We hope our short time with the students has increased their confidence, knowledge and skills as we continue to work with AKUH and the AK School of Nursing. The Moira Walker Award will be presented at the Opening Ceremonies, Sunday, May 27. Barb and Zahir will present on the initiative that resulted in their award at the Breakfast of Champions, Tuesday, May 29, Banff. The Moira Walker Memorial Award for International Service is sponsored by Sage Products LLC (now a part of Stryker). 20

28 CLOSING SESSION Dr. Patch Adams The Joy of Caring Wednesday, May 30 11:00 am 1:00 pm I interpret my experience in life as being happy. I want, as a doctor, to say it does matter to your health to be happy. It may be the most important health factor in your life. Patch Adams M.D. is an internationally known speaker on wellness, humor, and joy. He approaches the issues of personal, community, and global health with zestful exuberance, according to Time Magazine. Dr. Adams believes that the most revolutionary act one can commit in our world is to be happy. Extraordinary! A man I can look up to and respect, Incredibly mind blowing and memorable, and Inspiring, amazing human being invaluable to hear firsthand, are all testimonies of people who have had the chance to hear Dr. Patch Adams, the real man behind the hit Hollywood film Patch Adams. Patch is a medical doctor, a clown, and a social activist who has devoted 30 years to changing America s healthcare system. He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are integral parts of the healing process. Doctors and patients in his model relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust, and patients receive plenty of time from their doctors. Allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine work side by side in Patch s model. If you think that all sounds like a utopian impossibility, it isn t! Patch and his colleagues have practiced medicine at the Gesundheit Institute together in West Virginia that way for 43 years in what Patch refers to as their pilot project. Through the success of this program at the West Virginia location, a model healthcare facility is being planned on 310 acres purchased in Pocahontas County, WV. The Institute will include a 40-bed hospital, a theater, arts and crafts shops, horticulture and vocational therapy. Over five years ago, Dr. Adams temporarily stopped seeing patients so that he could coordinate plans for raising the $5 million needed for the Institute's permanent and expanded home, a model health care community. By bringing Patch Adams to speak, we are supporting this dream! Presented by: Made possible through the generous support of: 26

Unique Community Opportunities Standing Before IPC Stakeholders Jason MacDonald, B.Sc, B.EH(AD), CPHI(C), Environmental Public Health Advisor Health Protection Branch, Public Health and Compliance, Edmonton, Alberta The objective of this session will be to discuss two emerging and uniquely environmental health opportunities that stand before infection prevention and control stakeholders. The first is the opportunity that exists to increase the capacity of workers in non-hospital and non-clinical settings such as esthetic salons, daycares and other community settings. The second is the challenge that lies ahead in expressing to the public their role in preventing the creation of antibiotic resistant organisms in their households and built environments. Obviously, when done appropriately, cleaning and disinfection can prevent the spread of infections. When done incorrectly, evidence is showing us that we create antimicrobial resistant organisms and contribute to this increasingly serious issue. What role can non-government infection prevention and control stakeholders play in offering effective science communication to Canadians? Barbara Catt RN BScN MEd CIC, Public Health Ontario, Toronto, Ontario Claude LaFlamme MD FRCPC, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Ontario A key element for a successful Infection Prevention and Control Program is surveillance of surgical site infections (SSIs). One can compare SSI surveillance to that of a crevasse rescue. Although the mechanical principle of a crevasse rescue is simple, reality is dangerous and can be life threatening. In this session, current evidence-based strategies will be presented on preventing SSIs including process indicators. After this session, you will be able examine your SSI surveillance plan with a new lens and implement some rescue techniques. The presenters will: Discuss key strategies that occur in the Operating Room for preventing SSIs Discuss ambulatory surgical centers and applying a risk assessment STREAM B Kinnear Centre 101/103/105 Moderator: Lola Gushue BN RN CIC Clear Stream Ahead: A Urinary Tract Infection Program for Long-term Care Homes Jill Richmond RN MSc CIC, Public Health Ontario, Cambridge, Ontario Antimicrobial agents are overprescribed in long-term care homes (LTCH), which contributes to adverse outcomes such as Clostridium difficile infections and antimicrobial resistance. Key factors in this overuse are the over culturing of urine and prescribing of antimicrobials for asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB), which is often mistaken for a urinary tract infection. To address these issues, Public Health Ontario (PHO) created the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Program. This program emphasizes five core practice changes for the assessment and management of UTIs in non-catheterized residents in LTCHs. Changing practice is difficult and complex; education and tools alone may not lead to sustainable changes. The UTI Program has been designed to assess barriers to change and adopt appropriate strategies directed at the individual and organizational level to support the required practice changes. At this interactive session, participants will: Learn about the unique methodology that PHO used in the creation of the UTI Program Hear about the key strategies required to support the implementation of the UTI Program Find out about the recently released UTI program evaluation results Explore how the UTI program can be used to make an impact in your facility or region Lunch / Exhibits 11:30 am 1:30 pm Kinnear Centre 2nd & 3rd floor MONDAY POSTER PRESENTATIONS 12:30 pm 1:15 pm Kinnear Centre 206, 208, 210, 306, 308, 310 See page 51.
