2 FACTS ABOUT AGED CARE, DISABILITY, HOME AND COMMUNITY CARE $14.8 billion was spent by the Australian Government on aged care services during Government funding includes funding for home and community care, domestic assistance, personal care and community based respite care (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2016) As of April 2013, aged care became the fastest growing industry in Australia. As of September 2014, 3.1% of the Australian workforce works (as PAYG employees) in aged care. These are predominantly employed on a part-time, permanent basis 72% residential, 62% community (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013) The Australian population is growing older with 1 in 7 aged 65 or older this in turn creates a greater need for employees in the industry (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013). More than 240,000 workers are employed in the aged care and home and community care sector, in the direct care of the elderly. Of these 147,000 work in residential facilities and 93,350 in community outlets (Department of Health and Ageing, 2013) In , $7.5 billion was spent by Australian governments on disability support services under the NDA (excluding specialist psychiatric disability services). Of this, $7.0 billion was allocated directly to service delivery. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2016) In , an estimated 321,531 people used disability support services under the National Disability Agreement (NDA). The number of service users has generally increased over the 5 years to by 9% since , and by 3% between and If service users who only used open employment services are excluded (see Box 1.2), an estimated 219,564 people used NDA services in an increase of 7% since , and of 3% between and (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2016) Overall, 1.2 million people receive services from disability support services and/or the Home and Community Care program (HACC) program including 54,800 who use both disability support services and HACC services, 259,400 who use only disability support services, and over 879,500 who use only HACC services. 9 HOW This course is delivered in the following ways: Face to face delivery with a qualified trainer/assessor at an Apex Training Institute campus. Simulated work environment: There is a simulated work environment in the Apex campus, which is used for training on hands on skills. Online: All learning materials are placed online in written and video format. PowerPoints and other supplementary materials. Actual work environment: part of learning takes place during 120 hours of work placement in different contexts according to specialization. You are assessed using the following tools: Short questions Case studies Observation in a simulated work environment Observation in actual work environment via third party reports and observation checklists Student journal Research activities Oral assessment (Optional) page 9
10 Online learning and assessment can be conducted from anywhere where there is an Internet connection in the world. Your assessment in a simulated work place will take place in an Apex campus. Your vocational placement, and observation in an actual workplace, can be organised from any State and Territory in Australia. PRE-REQUISITES While there are no pre-requisites, the essential requirements to participate in this course are the ability to effectively communicate in an English workplace. A brief language and literacy assessment may be conducted by an Apex member of staff during the application process. page 10

12 FAQ How long does the course/qualification/certificate course take? At Apex, study is blended. This means you can combine face to face, correspondence and online learning however you please once you are enrolled as a student. The use of correspondence learning & online learning means you can go through the knowledge component of study as slowly or quickly as you want. However, from the date you enroll, you have 12 months to complete your study. To qualify for the award of Certificate III Individual Support, CHC33015 you must complete 120 hours of practical work placement in the context (s) that relate to your chosen specialization. This equates to 3-4 weeks based on 8 hours a day Monday to Friday. Yes, we assist you in finding vocational placement. As our student you are allowed to organize your own vocational placement. This has to be ratified by the Institute. Do we guarantee a job? We do not. We provide nationally recognized training that prepares you for industry. We also provide you as much support and information as we can to prepare you for employment in the industry. We assist with finding you work placement during the course of your study. Close to 7 out of 10 (65%) of Apex students get hired within 2 months of completing their qualification Do we guarantee a certificate? We do not. You must satisfactorily complete all your knowledge assessments and all assessments during work placement to qualify for a certificate.
