2 How do I get into the industry? Aged Care is about helping people in their advanced years lead happy and rewarding lives. Providing a degree of care and assistance day-to-day whilst promoting independence and choice provides freedom for people to live the life they choose. Whether its helping with some activities in the home or providing 24-hour residential care, working in the Aged Care industry is a rewarding experience. The Aged Care industry is one of the fastest growing areas of employment now and into the future with over 1 million people required to provide the care needed for the future aging population of Australia. That means that not only does Aged Care provide a rewarding opportunity to help people but it is a stable choice of employment with opportunities abounding in every region around the country. Work Experience & volunteers Work experience via a work placement program can give you valuable insight into what working in Aged Care is really like. Whether you are a student or a mature aged person seeking a change, work placement programs are available through job network agencies, registered training organisations or school work experience programs. Australian Apprenticeships A comprehensive range of apprenticeships and traineeships are available for people of all ages. Apprenticeships align with traditional trades like horticulture and cookery. Traineeships are shorter and include a range of qualifications in the industry. Contact your local Australian Apprenticeship Centre for details. School Based Programmes School-based traineeships and apprenticeships are also available through your school. These include Certificate II and III courses that you can undertake at school, starting in Year 10 and contributes to the completion of your High School Certificate. As well as a qualification, you gain valuable industry experience through paid part-time work. 3 Where could I work? Residents are usually independent, but care and services may be provided in the home of the resident by the village operator or another provider. There are common facilities where activities take place that are fun and inclusive of all residents. Home and Community Services Care and services are provided in the home of the care recipient to assist them to live independently. This can range from personal care, to shopping or housekeeping. Wellness centre Wellness centres offer regular planned activities and programs and social opportunities for older people, such as exercise classes or planned outings. Transport to and from the venue, morning tea and lunch can be included. It is usually a busy day also filled with fun and laughter. Hostel style single room accommodation with an en-suite and shared dining and lounge facilities. Residents can be independent and still require assistant with personal care, meals and activities of daily living. Residential care facilities provide a range of services to a diverse group of people who require supervised clinical care 24 hours a day. What opportunities are there for professional development One of the greatest attractions of Aged Care as a career is that there are so many different options, enabling you to work in the area that interests you most. Whichever you choose, training is available, progressing from basic to advanced levels. On-the job professional development is a key component, through courses and mentoring. 4 Jobs in the aged care industry Jobs related to direct care Working hands on, in both a Home Care and Residential Care setting and providing essential assistance to people to carry out the activities of daily living, including: Assistance with dressing and undressing Showering Toileting All aspects of personal care Providing domestic support within the household Meal preparation in the home Medication assistance within the home Job-roles include: Careworker (Residential) Home Care worker (Community) Care Coordinator Allied Health Assistant Physiotherapy Assistant Occupational Therapy Assistant Speech Pathology Assistant Registered Nurse Enrolled Nurse Leisure and Lifestyle Officer Qualifications related to direct care: There are a variety of courses that relate to job roles for direct care workers.
