Boy Scouts of America Monmouth Council Meet me at the Summit July 15 24, 2013 jambo.monmouthbsa.org Issue 2 October 2012 Announcements Please be certain to maintain your Summit Dashboard! Be sure your and contact information is correct and update your rank and leadership experience if necessary. If you own a geocaching GPS please let your Unit Leaders know. We need one GPS for each Patrol for the December Hike. September 23 December 15 April July Calendar Jamboree Kickoff at Monmouth Regional HS, 4:00pm NYC Geocaching Hike for all participants Shakedown Weekend for all participants Jambo, departs 7/14 at 6:00pm Jamboree Committee Jamboree Committee Chairman Steven Buckley sbuckley@monmouth.com MISSION Our mission for this, our 2013 National Jamboree, is to enrich the lives of youth participants, showcase Scouting as we start our second century, reinforce Scout skills, offer innovative programming, provide experience in leadership and teamwork, and offer a diverse, healthy, safe environment where everyone lives the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Open House We had our kickoff meeting held on September 23rd at Monmouth Regional High School and it was great in spite of being locked out of the building initially. We started the day in the bleachers at the soccer field before moving inside. I hope everyone found the group meeting and the four unit meetings helpful. From what I could judge we all had a good time. Unit Meetings We are now in the process of each unit starting to hold their individual meetings. These meeting continue though the spring of The next time we meet as a group will be the Geocaching Hike on December 15 th and then the shakedown training weekend at QHSR on April 26 th 28 th, From this point forward almost all communication from participant or their families will be handled thru their individual units, the adult leadership of the unit and our newsletters. If any special news needs to be sent out we will use our distribution lists. Registration We still have a couple of people that are not correctly registered on the Summit Jamboree site. Chris Quakenbush has been trying to finish this up. If you or your family is having difficulty electronically registering please contact Chris at the service center for assistance. Unit Assignments All units are full and we have a waiting list but we could use more folks to be in position for any future openings in our units. If you desire to be added to our waiting lists please register on the Summit Jamboree web site and Chris will take note of your desire. In addition please fill out our local paper Monmouth Council Application to hold your spot with a deposit. We are attempting to make a few adjustments to our current assignments of youth to units. A few people either assigned now to a troop or who are on the waiting list have shown a willingness or preference to be in our venture crew our in a different Jamboree Troop. Our problem is that our venture allocation is full at 17 youth and 3 adults. We are sharing the venture campsite with two groups from other councils. One of these councils has some openings which we have asked them if we could have them. If we are successful this will solve our situation. Please be patient if you are one of the folks waiting for a possible change Chris is working hard to make this happen. Budget We will be submitting our preliminary budget to Monmouth Council for inclusion in their 2013 budget this month. Our committee will see this budget at our October meeting. Once this is done it will be placed on our web. An

article on the budget discussing it in summary form will be in our next news letter. Jamboree Logo Items At the open house Ed Carroll who is in charge of our locally created logo items made a presentation on what has been designed so far. Order forms for purchasing extra items if you desire to that were passed out. If you lost yours or you did not get one for any reason the form can be found on the MC Jamboree website. On the form it also lists what items you receive as part of your Jamboree fee. Visitors at the Jamboree Hopefully by the end of 2012 a section will be added to the Summit National Jamboree website outing all the details for people who wish to visit the Jamboree. The site will list visiting hours (mainly 9am to 5pm except on the closing show day), Visitors Fees, Parking Fees, Required on-line registration instructions, and a short list of things to take special note of. You will only have access to the Summit Center for visitors where you will be able to experience what I would call a Jamboree Light Experience. At the Summit center you can pre arrange with family members to meet you there if you wish to see them. Details of this experience will be found on the web-site. In addition visitors will have no access to any other areas of the Jamboree. In fact you will not be free to wander all over the Jamboree or visit the Unit Camping Areas as was the practice in the past. This site also contains links to each units FaceBook page as well as a Google calendar for the Troops. Perhaps the most useful tool you will find besides the links to the Facebook Groups is the Google Calendar. You can access this calendar directly from your mobile devices. Website Instructions for syncing your mobile device with the Jamboree Troop Calendars can be found by going to calendar.google.com and going to the help page. Instructions can be found for Apple, Android, and Windows Mobile devices. There are several ways to keep up on what is happening with the Jamboree. Your Troops are you best source of information. Your adult leaders attend monthly meetings to hear the latest. They will share this info via your Troop meetings and . Discussions may also be held on the Troop FaceBook page. However, FaceBook is primarily to share photos, distribute reminders, and to answer questions in a forum format. The Monmouth Council Jamboree Committee also maintains a website whose address is always on the Newsletter s front page banner. It is this website that will contain payment information and other important documents. There is a lot of information on the Jamboree. At the National Level, on the Council Level, and on the Troop Level. Read everything sent to you. Read everything on the websites and the FaceBook pages. Be Prepared!

Troop B238 John Guaragno The Adult Leadership will allow our natural leaders to shine at our October Troop Meeting and we will be selecting our Scout Leadership Team after our meeting. That will then allow us to build our Patrols. Again, I ask each of you to be open and understand that some Patrol decisions may seem odd at first, but are proven in the long term to ensure all have an excellent Jamboree experience. If you are one of the 12 that have yet to sign up online for our Troop updates and provide some additional information, like interest in leadership positions for both the Scouts and the interested parents, visit here: Our next two Troop Meetings are: Sunday October 28 from 630PM to 8PM, and Sunday November 18 also from 630PM to 8PM. The Troop Meeting Location is the Neff Chapel behind the Old Tennant Presbyterian Church. For those using a GPS or Google maps, use 644 Craig Road, Manalapan, NJ and enter through the cemetery. The first white building on your left is Neff Chapel, identified in the picture below by a green arrow. All Scouts are expected to be in their Field Uniform for all Troop functions unless advised otherwise. Parents should plan to stay for the entire meeting. While the Patrols meet, the Troop Committee will also meet to discuss support items. Our October meeting will be to kick off some introductions of the Scouts, determine our Scout Leadership Positions and to position for Patrol Assignments. Our Youth Leadership Team is comprised of the SPL, the ASPL, the Scribe, and the Quartermaster. There will be four Patrols of eight Scouts each. If you are interested in one of these leadership positions, please state your interest when registering at the above Troop Registration site. We will also have a brief overview of the upcoming Troop meetings and events between now and Jamboree time. Troop C440 Peter Grasso C440_Leaders@monmouthbsa.org Announcements Our next Troop meeting will be held on Monday, November 5 from 7:30-9:00pm at the Monmouth Council Service Center on Ginesi Drive. The December Hike will be held on Saturday, December 15. It was originally set for later in the month but there was a conflict with the OA Dinner so we moved it earlier in the month. Everyone interested in holding a Senior Patrol Leadership position was interviewed. Everyone was very qualified and the Adult Leadership thanks everyone for stepping forward to make this a great Jambo Troop. We were very impressed with our Scouts. Troop C440 would like to congratulate SPL Francis Klincewicz, ASPL Chris Iverson, Scribe Dom Squillaro, and Quartermaster JP Fleming! We held our first meeting on October 8 and the Scouts divided themselves up into patrols: Classy Cubones Patrol; Cloud Nine Patrol; Border Patrol; and the Honeybadger Patrol. The Patrols also elected the Patrol Leaders, Assistant Patrol Leaders, and the Patrol Scribes. They are Classy Cubones PL is Noah Ziegler, APL Joseph LeTendre, Scribe Zachary Bolger; Cloud Nine PL Gregory Penczak, APL Bailey Ferrugia, Scribe Ajay Sandhu; Border Patrol PL Lee Sortore, APL Nathan Spaltro, Scribe Stephen Kostman; and the Honeybadger PL Richard Pyburn, APL Matthew Stevenson, and Scribe James Borg. If you need to reach out to the adult leadership please use the C440_Leaders@monmouthbsa.org address. Your will automatically go to all four adult leaders. addresses and telephone numbers for the patrols will be distributed to the Patrol Leaders shortly so that they can communicate with their Patrols. If you use Facebook and haven t joined our Facebook Group then please do so. It is a closed group so only those approved by the leadership can see what is on the page. This page will be used for running discussions and answering questions during the year. We will also be publishing Troop photos on the Group during the December Hike, Shakedown, and of course the Jambo itself. Don t miss out! Meet me at the Summit!

Troop D418 Kevin Sweetnam Crew F302 Advisor Brian DeShong It was great to see many of you at the Jamboree Rally and start to form our Troop. We have 6 troop meetings, 1 contingent trip and a shakedown campout to get ourselves ready for the Summit. Our goal is to make the Jamboree one of the lasting memories in your scouting career. We will keep everyone up-to-date via and Facebook. We have set up and address for you to contact the 4 adult leaders. Please send your s to this address: D418_leaders@monmouthbsa.org We have also created a Facebook page for the Jamboree Troop. The Facebook page will be used to share information and ask questions. During the Jamboree, we will post pictures to the page and give periodic updates of things happening at the Jamboree. It is a Closed Group and no one will be able to view our site without the approval of the admin. This group will be available for members of our Jamboree Troop and members of the Jamboree Committee. If you wish to join the Facebook page you ll need to search for Troop D418 National Scout Jamboree 2013 and send a request. The is administrator of the site and will grant you access. Troop Meetings We will hold our first Troop Meeting on Sunday, October 28th. The meeting will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 136 Wemrock Road, Freehold. The meetings will start at 4:00pm and end at 5:30pm. Future meeting dates are Nov 25th, Jan 20th, Feb 24th, Mar 24th, and May 19th. All meetings will be held at the LDS Church from 4pm 5:30pm. Everyone is expected to attend the Troop meetings and full uniforms (Class A) are required. Youth Leadership We are in the process of selecting the Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe and Quartermaster for the troop. Please make sure that you submit your Youth Leader Application by October 14th. Please your application to D418_leaders@monmouthbsa.org We ll see you all on the 28th! Crew News Crew 302 has grown! Our members come from 3 different Councils, the majority of which (over half the Crew) are from Monmouth Council with the remainder from Jersey Shore (Ocean County) and Delmarva (Delaware/ Maryland/ Virginia) Councils. We are in the process of reaching out to the other Council contingents so that we can become one cohesive unit at Jamboree. At Jamboree, our contingent will be placed with other Venturers and International Scouts to make our experience unique and interesting. As mentioned elsewhere in the newsletter, there is a closed Facebook community to share information. Additionally, communications will take place via . If you need to contact the leaders, we can be reached at f302_leaders@monmouthbsa.org. Crew Meetings We held our first Crew meeting on Oct. 14, 2012 at the Monmouth Council Service Center. At the meeting, we all introduced ourselves with some fun games in addition to discussing the election of Crew leaders. We also answered a number of questions from the parents about a variety of topics during our talk with them. Our next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18, 2012 from 4-5:30 pm at the Monmouth Council Service Center. At the next meeting, we will watch some videos on the Jamboree at the Summit, hold elections, and go over the Jamboree the various activities available. Future meeting dates will be determined on a monthly basis. Since crews have different uniform requirements, crew members should arrive to the monthly meetings in either their Class A or B Crew shirt, or a plain green T shirt. In light of Venture Crew Class A shirts being unavailable through Council, we will discuss obtaining a Jamboree Crew T shirt at the next meeting. Youth Leadership We are in the process of selecting a President, Vice President and Scribe. If you are interested in the position, please send your name, the position you are interested in and why you think you re qualified/why you want the position to your leaders at f302_leaders@monmouthbsa.org.

Summit.Scouting.Org This is going to be the most high tech Jamboree ever. We are used to getting our news every morning at the Jamboree in a newspaper. No more, now it will be on our smartphones. We were given a map of the Jamboree in years past, now we will be reliant on our mobile device to get around. Registration and medicals are even going high tech. Do you recognize this website? You will have to register for certain events. We are not sure of what these events will be. For certain Rafting will be one of the events. You will register for these events on the Summit site. It is in your best interest to know your user ID and password. To be sure how to login. So that when you are notified that activity registrations are available you know how to login and can register for the activities you are interested in as quickly as possible. Don t be locked out of an activity because you don t recall your password! The information on these pages will be used to create your Jamboree ID card including the picture. You initially signed up for the Jamboree here. That wasn t the last time you ll have to use it. You entered some important information and you ll need to keep it up to date. If anything changes such as telephone numbers or addresses you must login back here and update your information. You must also update your rank advancement here. Made First Class? Congratulations, update the Summit site. This is very important. Even if you tell your Patrol Leader or your a new cell phone number or address you MUST UPDATE THE SUMMIT SITE AS WELL! So here is an important assignment. Log in to the website and confirm your information. Make sure your parents addresses are listed as well as your own. Also make sure everyone s cell phone numbers are listed. We need to have this information to be able to reach everyone in the event of an emergency or if we have important information to pass along. The page below is where you would update your rank. When you update it here, the Council will notify your Jamboree. Remember to keep the Summit site up to date!
