R O T A R Y D I S T R I C T Issue No. 1 July 2013 ROTARY DISTRICT 5580 David Smette District Governor Rotary International District Clubs 3200 Rotarians Includes North Dakota Northern Minnesota Northwestern Wisconsin A Portion of Ontario CANADA A large District spanning 1,100 miles Member of Zone District Governor David Smette smette@gmail.com th St. SE, Jamestown, ND (C) / (H) smettedavid@gmail.com Rotary Greetings Fellow Rotarians: My year as District Governor is here! The reality of that was brought home recently with the Passing of the Gavel. The Jamestown Rotary Club hosted the event and did just a wonderful job of the whole affair. It was something very special for Claudette and I. The end of June of course brings Governor Don and Mary Cavalier s year to a close. They have done a wonderful job in fulfilling all of the tasks of being the Governor and first Lady of District 5580! Many thanks to both of them for their hard work and for their Service above Self! Claudette and I were in Portugal for the Rotary International Conference held in Lisbon. We have attended the last two International conferences; New Orleans and last year in Bangkok. They are wonderful showcases of all that Rotary is doing in the world as well as good training on the many avenues of service. Our year as Governor of Rotary District 5580 began on July 1 st. Our first club visits were up to visit the Canadian Clubs on July 8 th. We look forward to our visits to all of the Rotary Clubs. Yours in Rotary Service, District Governor-Elect Tim Kaminski Dave and Claudette Smette

David H. Smette District Governor Rotary Club of Jamestown, ND USA I first joined Rotary in 1988 in Dickinson, North Dakota. I have been a member of four different Rotary Clubs during my 25 years in Rotary. Besides Dickinson, I was a member in Menomonie and Marshfield, Wisconsin and now am a member in Jamestown, North Dakota. Claudette and I have been married for 45 years this coming spring. We both grew up on farms in Northern North Dakota. I grew up west of Upham and Claudette just west of Rugby. We have two girls. Candace is a veterinarian living in Grand Rapids, Minnesota with her husband Derek. Pamela is our special daughter living here in an apartment in Jamestown. Claudette and I were both teachers. Claudette was a Physical Education teacher and coach while I taught physics, chemistry and mathematics. I taught in Mohall, North Dakota. Claudette taught in Pittsville, Wisconsin. Later we both taught in Random Lake just north of Milwaukee. I have multiple hobbies including raising and riding Arabian horses, hunting and fishing, cross country skiing and reading books and traveling. My most memorable two trips have been a Rotary project to Guatemala to assist in building a first aid station and dock and a trip to Nepal where I assisted with the Polio vaccinations. One of Dave s first meetings up to the Thunder Bay was to the Port Arthur Rotary Club. Here, Judi Turner, Club President, trades banners with District Governor Dave.

Greetings District 5580 Rotarians: July is a month of transitions for Rotary Clubs and Rotarians. It certainly is a big change for Claudette and me as we have already started our Club visits, first to Thunder Bay and Nipigon Clubs and this week with a visit to Camp RYLA and clubs in central and Duluth/Superior area. It is a wonderful experience to visit clubs, find out the many good projects Rotarians are involved in, and make new friends. July is also a transition time for all Rotary Clubs and RI International. New Presidents and Boards of Directors take office and new visions and goals are established for the years ahead. This year is a major transition for RI as well. We have moved from Future Vision to a new and reorganized method of looking at our grant structure. The new grant model builds on the success of the past and builds in more sustainability and flexibility so that we can serve more people around the world in better ways. Most if not all of our clubs have had at least one person attend Roly Turner s Grant Management Seminars. Consequently, these clubs have a very knowledgeable person to lead the way in working on grants. Our District 5580 Grant Committee has also put Mentors in place to assist with those clubs who have submitted grants or wish to in the future. One of the changes that has come about was the elimination of a very popular program called the GSE cultural exchange. Our District 5580 did explore the possibility of trying to continue that program on our own but it was not possible since Rotary International had phased it out, and with it, their support for finding partners worldwide. The new Vocational Training Teams, however, should be even more exciting and achieve a much higher level of service to people in countries that we as Rotarians are trying to serve. There is quite a bit of information on line as to how to assemble a VTT. I would hope that some of our clubs would start exploring the idea of putting together a VTT in conjunction with a global Grant. Rick Bricker of the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club will be serving as VTT Chair and would be glad to talk with you about this program. Claudette and I look forward to our continued Club Visits. It will be an exciting summer and fall for us! ENGAGE ROTARY CHANGE LIVES Dave Smette District 5580 Governor

ASK DIANE Fellow Rotarians, Here we are in another new Rotary Year, ready to EMBRACE ROTARY CHANGE LIVES. How good it feels to be back at my desk, working for all of you again! As I look at our Theme for this year, it really struck a personal chord with me. Because of all that happened to me from April through June, I experienced first-hand what can happen when my life was changed so dramatically. And, I absolutely knew what it meant to embrace Rotary. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for everyone s good wishes through their prayers, cards, s, flowers and telephone calls, together with all the offers of help and support. District Officers stepped up and did much of their own work, there was a fantastic District Conference carried out, as well as a smooth transition of our District Leadership. My thanks to all of you for everything. I am doing very well and the healing process continues on schedule. My office hours are still somewhat limited, and I have learned to pace myself according to how I m feeling that day. WELCOME to our new Club Presidents, Secretaries and other Club Officers. 5 Todos Por el Lago Everyone for the Lake Atitlan-Agua Hermosa (An Update on the Lake Atitlan Global Water Project) Composed by Terri McLean and Submitted by Bob McLean D5580 Water/Sanitation Chair Lush vegetation, flora, fauna, coffee plants, and vibrant color spread over the mountainsides along the windy road leading to the jewel of Guatemala- Lake Atitlan. Tourists call it the Guatemalan Riviera. Many deem it the most beautiful lake in the world. In addition to its stunning beauty, it has nurtured its inhabitants for centuries with food, drink, a place to clean and a place to play. But now, Lake Atitlan is in deep peril. At an elevation of 5125 feet, the lake is encircled by mountains and volcanoes. Thus, the depths of the lake can reach 1,120 feet. The surface of the lakes stretches over 50 square miles and its shores are home to nearly a dozen major villages. Tourism has staked its claim on much of this exquisite area. Hotels, restaurants and shopping bazaars are frequented by many. Well cultivated coffee plantations prosper along the hills. When travelling by boat, one can see magnificent homes built into the hills and shores. Many owned by wealthy Guatemalans and a good sum of them by expatriots wanting to experience this piece of paradise. Stepping off the boat and interacting with many of the local villagers, one quickly realizes this is not all paradise. Indigenous peoples have inhabited these hills for centuries. Civil wars, deforestation, over building and over population have wreaked havoc on the area. Recent mudslides have carried towns, people and their belongings to the depths of the lake. The water is contaminated, but centuries of traditional practices and lack of alternatives keep the people using at their risk. The locals have rallied. In 2010, a group of concerned citizens formed Todos Por El Lago (Everyone for the Lake); a Committee working to solve the pollution problem with new practices and education, a daunting task. Rotary Clubs from Guatemala District 4250 have become quite involved as well, working on methods to reverse the devastation. Collaborating with leaders of local municipalities, environmentalists of the area and the input of local communities has brought the necessary attention to the issues. In 2011, Rotarians from Cupertino, California District 5170, visiting other projects in the area, were moved to join in the cause. Club Cupertino as International sponsor, and Club del Este Guatemala as Host sponsor sought a Future Vision Pilot Global Grant to help finance the programs needed for positive change. In addition, Rotarians from our own District 5580 raised additional funds to help the two pilot districts qualify for the international grant. After a very long process, the grant came through and in February, 2013, members of 5580 joined the Cupertino team to visit the sites in progress along the shores of Lake Atitlan.

Warmed by the hearths of our gracious hosts, we set out on a sun glistening morning. We boated over to the town of San Lucas Toliman where one of the first demonstration sites has been constructed. As we approach the site there was a stark contrast between those still washing clothes in the filthy water along the shore while others were making good use of the new pilas (washing station modules). The grant will cover five of these modules in most needed locations. Each will contain the following: 12 outdoor clothes washing stations- Traditionally clothes have been washed on the rocky shores of the lake also serving as visiting time for village women and playtime for young children. Detergent phosphates, debris and excrement have all contributed to pollution. The new stations are cement wash basins with running water located up the hill. Women like the height and size of the tubs. They like the roughness for scrubbing and the running water for rinsing. The 12 are built next to each other for the social aspect to continue. Soapy used water drains into three constructed tiered wetland systems. These tiers filter the water leaving it clean as it makes its way back to the lake. It is a simple, effective, sustainable approach. Nearby is a simple playground for young children to play safely in mom s view as she completes her tasks. Slightly down the hill was the new bathroom line with running water and a collection tank for the treatment of raw sewage. Below this also was a tiered constructed wetland system for the resistance of erosion and filtration of the waters returning to the lake. The people are very happy with these new advancements. It enhances long standing traditions with safer more hygienic practices. The local committees are conducting training in the proper use of the wash station and toilets as well as education about general sanitation, hygiene and disease control. All residents are expected to contribute as best they can. If unable to give monetarily, many will contribute hours of labor helping with construction, maintenance and cleaning up garbage before it gets to the lake. It was great to see this project becoming real to these people. Back in our boats, we motored over to the north end of the lake to the town of Tsununa. The poverty and isolation of this town were visibly more intense. It is one of the poorest villages in all of Guatemala. Soil was dry, hard and pale; plants struggling. Visiting Rotarians noticed a scrawny squirrel in a cage which they first thought to be a pet, but we learned it was livestock waiting to be fattened for a family meal of 9. Space was cleared in this town for the construction of the wash stations, latrines, filtration wetlands and a playground. The mayor was excited and grateful. He had seen the other modules underway and could see the benefits and necessity. Hopefully, as the village becomes involved in these projects, the outcomes will inspire further endeavors that will better their lives.

Zimbabwe is Grateful for Tractors Tractors donated by Titan Machinery and Rotary International reach Zimbabwe. It started with a dream. What if we raised enough money to send tractors to Zimbabwe? Rotarians and Missionaries, Don and Maryjane Westra, work in Zimbabwe to improve health care and develop sustainable farming projects. Farming in Zimbabwe has been decimated by war and a failed land reform policy. Rotarians from the Fergus Falls Sunrise Rotary, Fergus Falls Noon Rotary, Titan Machinery and Federated Church, in coordination with members of Mutare (Zimbabwe) Rotary Club, took the challenge and began a project that developed into not only one tractor, but two tractors, two chisel plows, two disks, three corn planters, two row crop cultivators, two Woods mowers, two sprayers, two fertilizer spreaders and numerous hand tools. Rotarians from District 5580 and non-rotarians raised money and shopped for quality used equipment. Titan Machinery donated two tractors, with low hours, along with their expertise in disassembling, loading two 40 foot long containers and making arrangements for shipment. The tractors traveled around the globe by sea, tracked on the internet by Rotary members. On February 11, after spending several weeks in the port city of Beira, Mozambique and in the hands of customs officials, the tractors arrived at their destination in Mt. Selinda Mission, Zimbabwe. The tractors and equipment are being used on the mission to revive the agriculture program, grow food crops to sustain the hospital, school and children s home on the mission, and provide jobs for local people. The project in injected $12,000 in local wages in an area where people live on a dollar a day. The primary people leading this project were Rotarians Rud Wasson, John McFarlane, Don Westra and Wayne Miller. Machinery isn t the only thing needed to have a successful farm. Money was raised for seed, fertilizer, a security fence as well as wages for hand labor. Don Westra coordinated the project in Zimbabwe; however, he was recently denied entry by the Zimbabwean Immigration Authorities and is in Minnesota awaiting word of a possible return. The tractors and machinery are in the hands of a farm committee on Mt. Selinda Mission. There is a qualified farm manager on sight as well as capable employees to keep the project moving forward. The machinery is being used and is greatly appreciated. The question often asked is do they know how to assemble and maintain the machinery. Prior to the year 2000 about 80% of the work force was involved in agriculture. Their farming practices are similar to the methods we use in the US, just on a smaller scale. Rotary was saddened by the recent death of Rotarian Wayne Miller, local farmer and one of the key players in the tractor project. Wayne worked hard to make this project a success and lived long enough to know the tractors arrived successfully in Zimbabwe.

D-5580 Rotary Foundation Future Vision News Vol. 2 no 10, July Welcome to the launch of Rotary Foundation Future Vision. As the three year Pilot program wound down June 30 I am happy to report that D-5580 Rotarians and Clubs are well prepared to participate in the new Model of Grants commencing in the Rotary year. Thanks to the Future Vision Transition and Grants Subcommittees with support from District Leadership we were able to promote the new programs, conduct Grant Management Seminars (GMS) and give one to one advice and mentorship to those clubs pursuing grant opportunities. And: thanks to the keen interest of Rotarians district wide we were successful in qualifying 96 members representing 49 (74%) of our 66 clubs via attendance at one of our 6 GMS opportunities. Remember; in person attendance is required annually. We are currently planning an improved, updated and more inclusive version, to provide next year s training. There was an impressive response from D-5580 Clubs to the new District Grant process. Our spending plan includes Matching Grants totaling $62, to help fund 10 Community and 2 International Projects with a total value in excess of $240, involving 20 Rotary Clubs. The balance of total available $65, was directed to allowable district administrative expenses of $1, and a contingency of $ that could be applied to a possible late application. That spending plan was submitted to The Rotary Foundation May 25 th for final approval, to allow funds to flow in the Rotary new year. We are currently updating the District Grant Application and applicable criteria and will post it on the Grants Subcommittee Webpage of the district website as soon as possible. Clubs can apply for District Grant funds anytime from July 1, 2013 to March 31, Please do not hesitate to contact any member of the Grants Subcommittee or myself for advice or assistance. As outlined in the February newsletter , Global Grant can be submitted anytime until March They are available and completed online via TRF Member Access or the Rotary Grants Site at Applications are considered and approved on a rolling basis as the applications are received and funds remain available. Since Global Grants utilize both, TRF World, and District 5580 Designated Funds; club contributions are maximized with matching grants from both. Again, I encourage you to contact the Grants Subcommittee or myself for assistance. A mentor will be assigned to help with your application. District Grants and Global Grants are available thanks to your generous contributions to The Rotary Foundation Annual Program Fund. Please let s all strive for Every Rotarian Every Year. This is the last edition of Future Vision News and will be replaced with the new, all-encompassing version D-5580 Rotary Foundation Newsletter that will give all Foundation Subcommittee Chairs an opportunity to promote their areas of expertise. The Future Vision Webpage on the district website will be dismantled and amalgamated with the Grants Subcommittee Webpage. All relevant grant information and links will be moved there. So- Stay tuned cause we ll be Back Roly Turner Chair; District 5580 Rotary Foundation Committee. Keith Brokke Chair; Future Vision Transition Committee.

WELCOME BACK THE 88 TH ANNUAL PEACE AND GOODWILL WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 13 & 14, 2013 HOLIDAY INN on the Lake Detroit Lakes, MN Join the fun and fellowship with our Canadian Rotary Friends in District 5550 as District 5580 hosts the 88 th Annual Peace and Goodwill Weekend. As many of you will recall, the annual Goodwill Weekend used to be held in Winnipeg, MB in mid-february, but over the years, attendance had declined due to several factors, including excessive costs, driving in hazardous weather, and hosting this at a time when many of our snowbirds are gone. Now, all Rotarians in D5580 have an opportunity to attend the Goodwill Weekend at a reasonable cost, with time on Friday afternoon to play some golf or enjoy other Friday afternoon activities. On Saturday, a workshop entitled, Non-violent Peace Force will take place, and on Saturday night, the evening Banquet will top off the weekend. The Holiday Inn on the Lake in Detroit Lakes will be this year s venue, and this will be a wonderful location. September is a beautiful time of year in MN, and the Holiday Inn and surrounding hotels are offering excellent prices for the weekend. A Registration Form is located in this issue, but on-line registration is encouraged. Simply go to to register on-line and see the information regarding lodging and events. This is a weekend you won t want to miss. Bring your spouses and lots of your Club Members and a good time will be had by all!
