Congratulations to the terrific trio: Jill LaFetra of Rolling Hills 4-H, Will Green of Coyote Crest 4-H and Jeff Hares of Pleasant Acres 4-H. Each of these three youths have exemplified responsibility and an infectious camp spirit. We are looking forward to seeing what they have in store for camp this summer. - Susan Weaver State Record Book Competition Results The state record book competition is focused on selecting senior 4-H members who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their 4-H project work. Books are judged against standardized criteria. Those books displaying the most outstanding 4-H work, goal management skills, and leadership and citizenship development are selected as state medalists and/or state winners. Kyle Geringer and Theresa Willard are state winners! Congratulations! They ll receive a certificate and pin, and their books will be returned in mid- January. - Karen Werner Bryce 1

2 How do I get one? Where do I start? Who can help me with it? Come to the Record Book Workshop, where we ll help you make your record books. Record Books are like a scrapbook that keep track of what you ve learned in 4-H over the year. At the end of the year, you can earn award stars by showing off the things you ve done. We ll help you get started, or we can help you if you re stuck. You ll need to bring a laptop or a tablet so that you can use the online record book system. Then enter the 2015 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest! 2015 Essay Topic: Planting for Bees from Backyards and Up Submit a 750 to 1000 word essay with the listed criteria here. Awards: 1st Prize - $750, 2nd Prize - $500, 3rd Prize - $250 Essays must be submitted electronically as a Word or.pdf attachment, to the State 4-H Office by February 6, to: ca4h@ucanr.edu. In the subject line write: 2015 National Honey Bee Contest. The National winners essays will appear in an issue of the American Beekeeping Federation s newsletter. 2

3 California Focus A Unique Citizenship Educational Experience Youth aged June 19-23, 2015 Located at the Holiday Inn Capital Plaza Sacramento Witness California s government in action by participating in the legislative, political, and judicial processes. As a conference delegate you will: Register to vote, conduct a primary election, and develop a political campaign through a two party system. Elect constitutional offices. Analyze the needs and issues of your district and enact legislation with the goal of securing the governor's signature to make your bill a law. Create a service plan of action for your community Tour the State Capitol, Governor's office and 3rd Court of Appeal Participate in fun recreational activities, tours and cultural events Make new friends California Focus can be the beginning of a life of public participation that leaves you with a strong determination to become involved in your community. Don't miss being a part of this stimulating, funfilled learning adventure in Sacramento with opportunities to gain new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Youth must be at least 14 years old by 6/19; conference fees are $665 per person. An opportunity to work with kids, and build your leadership, decision-making and planning skills. Free monthly bus pass to travel to Elliot and/or Glenview Elementary School locations in Gilroy. Tech Wizards mentors teach hands-on activities to 3 rd -5 th graders in afterschool programs. 6 3 rd Annual State 4-H Shooting Sports ARCHERY Match It s time to sharpen up your archery skills for the 3 rd Annual State 4-H Archery Match in partnership with the state 4-H shooting sports program and Mendocino County 4-H Council. Entries must be postmarked by March 16, 2015 and returned by June 16, Don t wait until the last day to enter once your entries are received the targets and scorecards will be mailed. Here s the simple rules: DIVISIONS: Age as of December 31, 2014 Junior Intermediate Senior 9-10 years of age years of age years of age CATEGORIES: Traditional Longbow and recurve bows. Fingers only Any number of sight pins Kisser buttons and clickers OK 60 lb. maximum draw weight Any length stabilizers & torque compensators No string peeps No mechanical releases 2. Compound Any bow that uses pulleys, wheels or cams Fingers or mechanical releases Any type of sight with any number of pins or optical sights Any length stabilizers & torque compensators String peeps OK 60 lb. maximum draw weight Continued on Page 7 6

7 RULES: 1. Arrows may not be larger than 23/64ths in diameter for both traditional and compound categories. 2. Full color FITA targets, 80 cm faces, will be mailed to be used for the competition. 3. Scoring is 10 pts to 1 pt from the center outward. 4. The shooting distances for Junior are 10, 20, and 30 yards. 5. The shooting distances for Intermediate are 20, 30 and 40 yards. 6. The shooting distances for Senior are 30, 40 and 50 yards. 7. For each category, the participant will shoot 6 ends of 3 arrows each. 8. A member may enter traditional or compound or both with a maximum of three distances per category. 9. The entry fee is $5.00 for each category distance entered. 10. All entries must be verified by the county 4-H staff that participants are currently enrolled in 4-H archery. 11. Entries fees may be paid only by a check from the local county 4-H council. 12. Make checks payable to Mendocino County 4-H Council 13. Mail entries and fees to Mendocino County 4-H, 890 North Bush Street, Ukiah, CA no later than March 16 th. Match scorecards and targets will be mailed upon receipt to the county 4-H office or designated leader. No late entries will be accepted. 14. All targets must be shot and scored in the presence of a certified 4-H archery leader. There are 4 Certified Archery Leaders in Santa Clara County at this time. Please contact the 4-H Office if you need contact information for one of them. 15. All scorecards must be signed by your 4-H certified archery leader of record. 16. All completed scorecards must be returned to Mendocino County 4-H by June 16 th to be eligible for awards. No late scorecards will be accepted. 17. After the scorecards are verified, the results will be distributed through the county 4-H offices. Awards will be sent to the participating counties for archery leaders to present. 8 Office Closure The UCCE Santa Clara County 4-H Office will be closed Monday January 19, 2015 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 4-H Calendar January /10 Small Animal Science Field Day Santa Barbara Peppered Herb Cheese Ball Ingredients 3 Tb snipped chives 3 Tb snipped basil 2 Tb snipped parsley 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 4 ounces goat cheese 1/4-1/2 tsp cracked black pepper 1 clove garlic, minced Assorted crackers, crudite s, etc. In a medium bowl beat cream cheese and goat cheese with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Mix in herbs (reserve 1 Tb for outside), pepper, and garlic,. Form into a ball or log, roll in reserved herbs. Per serving: 121 cal., 5 g total fat (6 g sat. fat), 36 mg chol., 220 mg sodium, 1 g carbo., 0 g dietary fiber, 5 g protein. Daily Values: 9% vit. A, 10% vit.
