1 Argyle Secondary School Scholarship and Bursary Information for Awards are available in four broad categories: 1) Provincial government scholarships and awards where students must meet the criteria explained in section A on the next page. 2) Post-Secondary Institutions offer monies to students entering their first year. Most institutions are now automatically making offers based on grade point average on the application for admission. Major entrance scholarships still require an application form, and to be eligible marks in the 90% range in addition to major community involvement is required. Information is always available on the universities or colleges website. 3) Private awards require separate forms and have differing deadlines. Some of these are advertised publicly and the information we receive is posted in the counselling area. Others are available only to dependents or relatives of members of a union, for example, or they may be offered by employers. These will have to be sought out by the individual ask your parents, check your own place of employment, don t be satisfied until you have a conclusive answer. Examples are the Paul Pollhammer award for soccer refereeing, the NVTA Member Scholarship, and the VanCity Community Scholarship for members only. Some useful websites are: ) Argyle Awards are available only to students registered in Grade 12 for the first time and who are eligible to graduate. You must be a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant. Preference will be given to students who have attended Argyle for two years. Argyle awards are made available through the generosity of clubs, businesses, and individuals and have different criteria. By submitting your completed Argyle application form, you will be considered for all the awards that pertain to you. These are outlined in section C below - please read the instructions carefully before completing the application form. In most cases, awards are intended to assist graduating students in their pursuit of further education. Unless specified, recipients are required to provide a tuition fee receipt from a recognized post secondary institution before payment of the award will be made. Scholarships: awarded on the basis of academic performance in courses and/or school and community involvement. Bursaries: awarded on the basis of need (proof may be required) and may or may not consider academic achievement. 1
2 A) Provincial Government Scholarships and Awards i) Graduation Program Examinations Scholarships: (formally The Provincial Scholarship Program ) The Graduation Program Examination Scholarships rewards graduating students for academic excellence on their provincial exams and the monies are for further education. The awards are for $1000 and are given to the top 5000 students in the province based on students five required provincial exam results from grades Students must also achieve at least a B (73% or above) final mark (provincial exam and school mark combined) in English 12 or Communications 12. Students may rewrite an exam once within the twelve-month period following their initial attempt and all rewrites must be taken by August 31 st of the year they graduate. AP scores will no longer count towards scholarships. In addition, the top 20 scholarship students in the province are awarded $2500 each. Students who qualify for a provincial scholarship are mailed a voucher, which they have five years to redeem. ii) The Dogwood District/Authority Awards: (formally The District Scholarship Program ) This reward is available to graduates who excel in any of the following areas: Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Dance Drama, Music) Applied Skills (Business Ed, Technology Ed, Home Economics) Physical Activity (not limited to Physical Education) Second Languages (including Aboriginal Languages) Community Service Technical and Trades Training The amount awarded for superior achievement in their chosen non-academic field is $1000. A cheque for $500 is mailed to the winner in October, followed by a voucher for the remaining $500 mailed in November. Vouchers can be redeemed within five years at a post-secondary educational institution. To be eligible students are required to have demonstrated superior achievement in any of the areas listed above. This is not limited to school course work and may include attendance, work habits, cooperation and community achievements. Application is made by filling out the Argyle Scholarship Application Form and returning it before the deadline. Argyle expects to be allotted of these awards. To be eligible for Provincial Scholarships and Awards students must meet graduation requirements, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and a resident of BC. Students are now able to receive both a Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship and a Dogwood District/Authority Award. For more information on this program visit 2
3 B) North Vancouver Scholarships and Bursaries: Completion of the Argyle Scholarship Form is required for some award offered only to students of North Vancouver. The school committee will meet, review applications, and nominate appropriate candidates. If you are selected, you will be asked to fill out the additional forms. Some examples are: a) North Vancouver High School Education Foundation Awards this group gives a large number of scholarships and bursaries for academic and non-academic studies; approximate value of awards is $1200. Argyle nominates up to twenty candidates. b) Kiwanis Club of Evergreen six awards of $1000 each (minimum) are offered to a student for good academic record, significant service to the school and community, and who is in need of financial assistance. Argyle nominates up to two candidates. c) Rotary Club of North Vancouver 4 awards at $1,000 each to students based on financial need, outstanding citizenship and above average scholastic achievement in Grade 12. Argyle may nominate up to three candidates. C) Awards available to Argyle students only: In order to be eligible for Argyle awards, students must: be enrolled in a minimum of 7 courses (including Graduations Transitions) with the exception of student in Peak Performance have good character and citizenship be enrolled in Grade 12 for the first time be eligible to graduate be a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant preference will be given to students who have been in attendance at Argyle for the past two years The availability and value of these awards may change between the printing of this brochure and the presentation of the awards at the graduation ceremony in June. The Argyle scholarship committee (consisting of teachers, counsellors, and administrators) will determine the recipients of these awards based on information provided in the application. Each student will receive no more than one Argyle award, and it is not necessary to apply for each award separately, however you will be asked to indicate awards for which you are uniquely qualified. The deadline for submission of the Argyle Scholarship application is 3:30 p.m. February 27 th, Andrea Feddersen Memorial Scholarship $1500 This award was established in 1993 in memory of Andrea Feddersen who was tragically killed as a result of a skiing accident at Blackcomb while on a school outing with her French Immersion class. The winner of the award should have a GPA of 3.2 or better, show community involvement with preference given to a French Immersion student. Argyle Grad Council Scholarships 1 or $500 The Grad Council provides monies to students who are good academically, but also contribute to the school by participation in school functions. 3
4 Argyle Grad 2010 Most Inspirational Student $500 Through donation from the 2010 after grad organizing committee this award is giving to a student who displays acceptance of others and has a positive influence over those around him/her. The student has shown personal growth and embraced the years at Argyle through involvement in extracurricular activities. Argyle Grad Class of 2011 Scholarship $500 Through donation from the 2011 after grad organizing committee this award is giving to a student who has made significant contributions at Argyle and or in the community in the area of coaching. Argyle Most Outstanding Graduate Award $1,500 Awarded to an Argyle Graduate who has excelled in academic achievement, school citizenship, community service, and extracurricular involvement. Argyle PAC Award $500 These awards are based on financial need, academic achievements and community service. Monies are donated by the Friends of Argyle, a group that supports the school s activities in many ways. Booster Juice Healthy Balance Award $500 Established in the 2011 grad year, through the generosity of Rory Barlow of the Lynn Valley Booster Juice, for an Argyle graduate who demonstrates a healthy balance between family, friends, school, community service, personal health and work. Canadian Federation of University Women Bursary $700 This award is to encourage female students to pursue their studies at a post-secondary institution. Capilano College Achievement Award 1 tuition waiver ($1,500) For a graduate of good standing who plans to spend at least one year at the college. Minimum 3.3 GPA required, must take at least 12 credits at Capilano College. Not Renewable. Catherine Wiens Memorial Award for LAC students 1 or $250 - $500 This award is available to any qualified graduating student who has received Learning Assistance at Argyle and who is entering further schooling, training or apprenticeship. Must include a separate letter describing how LAC has helped you. District of North Vancouver Centennial Bursary $600 Student must reside in District of North Vancouver, be a good student, and continue on to further education. E.H. Valentine Memorial Scholarship $500 Given to a student who has excellent work habits and is interested in becoming an engineer; the award is made available through the generosity of Ms. Valentine to honour her father, a long time Lynn Valley resident Fraternal Order of Eagles Scholarship $500 There are no special criteria for this award other than achievement in academics. 4
5 Fromme Elementary School Scholarship $250 Given through the generosity of the Parent Advisory Council to a student who attended Fromme in Grade 7 and who is a participant in the community at large and the school community in particular, demonstrating such qualities as inclusiveness, empathy, and an understanding or appreciation of the enriching effect a variety of people, needs, views and skills bring to schools and our community as a whole. Must intend to pursue postsecondary education Government Dogwood District/Authority Awards $1,000 To be eligible students are required to have demonstrated superior achievement in a specialty area (Fine Arts, Applied Skills, Physical Activity, Second Languages, Technical and Trades Training or Community Service). This is not limited to school course work and may include attendance, work habits, cooperation and community achievements. I.R. Miller Memorial Award $300 This award is to honour Mr. Miller, a former Principal of Lynn Valley Elementary and is awarded to well-rounded student who works hard in a multitude of disciplines and is involved in athletics and music. Jim Martin Memorial Award $1,100 In recognition of Jim Martin s contributions and dedication to the Argyle Rugby Program through coaching and leadership this award is given to a student who has made significant contribution and dedication to Argyle Athletics through coaching and or team leadership with preference given to a Senior Rugby player. Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver Scholarships, Most Community Minded Student $1000 This award is for our Most Community Minded academic graduate who serves the community in whatever way they are able. Koon Chang Yeung Memorial Scholarships $500 Monies made available through the generosity of the family of Mr. Yeung, the long-time owner/proprietor of Mountain Market, to be distributed as follows: 1 award for achievement in Visual or Performing Arts 1 award for overall achievement in academics (need may also be considered) 1 award for Humanitarian endeavours All winners should show evidence of trying to improve themselves and doing their best: effort is an important factor. These will not necessarily go to the student who gets the highest marks. To receive the Humanitarian award enrollment in a post-secondary institution is not required, but for the other two awards it is. Lynn Valley Lions Academic Scholarship $1200 Awarded to a student proceeding to a university, based on academics and citizenship, community participation as well as leadership. Lynn Valley Lions, Allan McDougall, Bursary $1200 Based 50% on financial need and 50% on marks, citizenship and community participation. 5
6 Lynn Valley Lions Career Scholarship $1200 Awarded to a student proceeding to technical or vocational school, based on marks, courses, citizenship, community participation and leadership. Mountain Market Scholarship $500 Given through the generosity of the owners of the Mountain Market, Mr. & Mrs. Steve and Mary Lee, these awards are based on financial need, academic achievements and community service. Mountain West Studio 4 or $500 - $750 These awards are based on academic achievements, community service and or extracurricular participation. Nashlyn Lloyd Argyle Appreciation Award $750 Given to one male and one female student who pursues Math and Music to a senior level at Argyle and intends on continuing with either of these after graduation. Mrs. Roberts will be consulted to determine the winners. Nicole Donald Memorial Scholarship $1000 Nicole graduated from Argyle in 1993 and was tragically killed in a car accident while attending the University of Victoria in November of her first year. The criteria are: (1) a solid B student, (2) someone who has shown an improvement in attitude, involvement, and achievement since Grade 8, (3) continuing with your education at either college, BCIT, or university, (4) deserving of assistance. North Vancouver Teachers Association Teacher Education Scholarship $500 The successful candidate will be a person intending on becoming a teacher. Park Royal Scholarship $1000 For a student who shows an honest effort in academic areas and participates in community events, sports, and other extra-curricular activities. Rotary Club of Lions Gate Award $1,000 For a student pursuing vocational training with priority given to a Special Education student who has overcome a significant challenge. Winner chosen in consultation with Special Education department. Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 114) Ken Smith Memorial Trust Scholarship $1000 The winner of this award must be someone who is continuing their education in the field of music. Seanna and Nicole Strongman Memorial Scholarship $2000 Winners must show commitment and dedication in five different categories: (1) academic achievement, (2) school citizenship, (3) community service, (4) involvement in athletics and the arts, (5) leadership. One award is for a male and one award is for a female graduate. 6
