2 THE BULLETIN California State University, San Bernardino CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY San Bernaruino NOV r*3aa<ai 9,i984 Parking^ Student Fees Changed For Fall '81 Parking fees for students and employees on all CSU campuses will go up from $5 to $7.50 per month, beginning next fal 1. In the action taken by the Board of Trustees Oct. 25 was an Increase in the daily parking rate, which will go from the present 50 cents to a new range of 75 cents to $1. The trustees approved the system's request of $1.2 billion for a support budget and $32.8 million for plant and facilities. Included in the request, which goes to the Department of Finance and Legislature, are two priority proposals to improve preparation of teachers and increase access of ethnic minorities. The items are $9.7 million for upgrading teacher preparation programs and $12.2 million to deal with minority underrepresentation. Under a revised budget approach approved by the trustees earlier, the CSU student services fee will be combined with the state university fee beginning next fall. Undergraduates enrolled for more than six units will pay slightly more--$594 per year compared with the current $573. Undergraduates with less than six units would pay $342. The additional $12-per-quarter fee assessed on graduate students a year ago will be eliminated. Clarence Goodwin Heads Advisory Board Clarence R. Goodwin, administrator for youth services with the San Bernardino City Schools, is the new chair of the University Advisory Board. Goodwin, who has been with the city schools for nearly 20 years, joined the Advisory Board in June The 13-member group is composed of civic, business and educational leaders who meet periodically with President Evans and other senior administrators to review both the needs of the university and the communities it serves. A former junior high teacher and coach, Goodwin has held a number of positions in central administration of the city schools since He is active in various community groups. His wife, Etiwanda, earned her B.A. and M.A. from Cal State, San Bernardino and currently is a teacher. Library Book Sale Set For Wednesdayy Nov. The Pfau Library will hold a book sale on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the north end of the Library basement. m Hundreds of new and used books on all topics will be sold for 50 cents, hardcovers; 30 cents, large paperbacks; 20 cents, small paperbacks; and 5 cents for loose magazines and pamphlets. Remaining books will be sold for $2 per bag from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. All proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new books for the Library, The Library has held the surplus book sale several times in the past and has raised several hundred dollars each time.

Ib assessment instruments, provide an overview of student outcomes research, and enhance professional networking in the Inland Empire area, will be held Friday, Nov. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Lower Commons. Sponsored by the Inland Empire Student Services Consortium, the program will consist of five workshops Including on-campus evaluation, surveying graduates, retention, remediation/assessment, marketing strategies and community college transfer predisposition. Campus lecturers include Dr. Peter Wilson (Student Affairs), Dr. Nabil Razzouk (Marketing), Don Kajcienski (Enrollment Services) and Dr. Robert Schwabe (Institutional Research). Interested staff members are asked to send a registration form by Friday, Nov. 9 to Dean of Students. A $7 fee includes morning coffee, donuts, lunch and conference materials. Faculty Nominations Sought The student Services and Programs Committee is c AW seeking nominations for faculty appointments to For AQVlSOry LOmmittGG Educational Equity Advisory Committee that will work closely with the campus' current equity programs (EOP, Student Affirmative Action, Upward Bound, SAIL, Learning Center) as well as new ventures. The committee will provide advice on on-campus policies and procedures, programs and services, priorities, timelines and budgets and the development of a long-range plan for recruitment, retention and graduation of underrepresented students. The committee will work with the associate dean of educational support services and his staff, the dean of students, the academic vice president, and the Student Services and Programs Committee. Membership would include five faculty, three students and an administrative representative. Nominations should be sent to Johnnie Ann Ralph at PL 66 by Nov. 16. 4 Faculty Lecture/Recital A faculty lecture/recltal, part of the Thursday To Highlight French Poems H held Thursday, Nov. ib in the Kecital Hall. Dr. Jerrold Pritchard (Academic Programs, Music) will provide a preview of works to be performed at an evening faculty artist recital on Nov. 26. Dr. Larry McFatter (Music) will do the piano accompaniment. A series of 12 poems, "Bilitis" by Claude Debussy, will be narrated by Dr. Mireille Rydell (Foreign Languages) in French with English translations, and Mario Davidowsky's Cynchronisms for Flute and Electronic Sound" will be discussed. Pritchard will provide background information on each piece and discuss how they were written. Golojuch Exhibit Held At Loma Linda University An exhibit of portrait photography by Janice Golojuch (Art) will be displayed in the Martha Alice Little Gallery and the Visual Art Center at Loma Linda University, La Sierra campus, Friday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Dec. 14. A reception for the artist will be held Monday, Nov. 19 from 6 to 9 in the Visual Art Center', Included in the exhibit will be a two wall murals measuring 12 feet hand-colored self-portraits. Bedell, chair of the CSU Academic Senate, acting associate vice chancellor of academic affairs, effective Nov. 12. Bedell, a professor of Sociology at CSU, Fullerton since 1969, was appointed by CSU Provost William E. Vandament to fill the position vacated by Dr. Robert 0. Bess, who now is fice president of operations and finances at CSU, Sacramento.

Cleaves (Psychology) and Sheryl Wilson, a former -... student In the Psychology M.A. program and now a Ph.D. candidate Activities University of Arizona, gave a presentation on "Support for the Qualitative Difference in the Structure of Intelligence of Retarded Children Compared to Normal Children," at the fourth annual meeting of the National Academy of Neuropsychologists in San Diego, Oct Dr. Cleaves^^and Sharon Jordan, a graduate student in psychology, also gave a presentation on "Influence of Gender on the Verbal Components Measured by the Halstead-Reitan Trail Making Tests" during the meeting. Dr. David Shichor (Criminal Justice) was appointed as a visiting scholar for the fall quarter at the Social Science Research Institute of the University of Southern California. Frank Slaton (Computer Center) served as a judge at the Tournament of Robots III, an educational competition for personal robots, Oct. 28 in Santa Ana. Dr. Edward M. White (English), a consultant to a committee of the Medical College Admission Test, was on a panel at the Chicago meeting of the American Association of Medical Colleges. Oct. 28. His topic was "The MCAT Experimental Essay Project: Study Issues." He also spoke at the Institute of Issues in English Language Arts sponsored by the UCLA Graduate School of Education, Oct. 30 in Culver City, on "An Overview: History, Theory and Problems of Direct Measurement of Writing Ability." Comnunity Pat Hadlock ( Arts) served as a lighting consultant for the ^ Victoria Community Church in Riverside Nov. 3. Service Dr. Michael Weiss (Psychology) presented a program on fatliering at the Redlands YMCA on Nov. 5. Cherif Zein (Athletics, Soccer Coach) has chosen 14 area youths to participate in a number of exhibition soccer games in Costa Rica. The youths also will participate in several other activities as a cultural exchange with the Costa Ricans. Directed by Paul Kardos (Music), artists participating include Dr. Jerrold Pritchard (Music) who will perform "Carnival of Venice With Variations" by Cappola, on flute; and Gianna Pirelli, who will play "The Warsaw Piano Concerto" by Richard Addinsell. India Discussion Faculty, students and staff are invited to a panel discussion of the,recent events in India from noon to 1 p.m. today in PL 241. Drs. Jim Thomas (Political Science), Held Today At Richard Saylor (Music) and Elliott Barkan (History) will address the subject with Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian faculty members. Dr. Brij Khare (Political Science) is arranging the program. A native of India, Dr. Khare has spent much time there on sabbatical and research projects.

6 Frank Slaton DesignatGd with the growth of computing equipment and capability nirprtnr nf rnrmiitinn throughout the campus, Frank Slaton has been given new ^ ^ coordinating responsibilities and has been designated as director of computing. j The new title will formalize some of the service Slaton has been providing to the campus community In the past. He will provide assistance to all computer users on campus, both microcomputer and those with terminals attached to larger equipment. Part of his responsibilities will Include development of training courses for faculty and staff and furnishing of technical advice In the selection of equipment and software for administrative and academic uses. He also will be the liaison with the Chancellor's Office on computer matters. Slaton came to Cal State In February 1975 as manager of data processing services following a career In the Air Force. He also has taught evening computing classes here before the computer center grew to Its present proportions. A CPA, Slaton holds a B.S. degree In accounting from the University of Kentucky, an M.S. In computer science from Stanford and an M.B.A. from Cal State. He has published articles and given numerous demonstrations on the use of computers and robots and Is the originator of the successful ME (Microtechnology for Everybody) Festival.
