1 Volume XXXIV No. 9, May 2017 The Grand Master s Message: Benjamin Franklin, the Man & Freemason M.W.B. Arthur L. Borland Grand Master Of all the great American figures, Benjamin Franklin was among the best known and revered. He contributed greatly to the establishment of America and helped determine its direction over the past 241 years. A Renaissance man, unparalleled by his contemporaries, his life was varied and extensive. He was a wellknown inventor, writer and publisher as well as an ambassador, statesman, outspoken abolitionist and women s rights proponent. At the age of 12, Benjamin left school to become an apprentice to his older brother, James, in the printing business. During this time, he wrote many articles, published either anonymously or under the aliases of Richard Saunders and Silence Dogood. After James was arrested for publishing scandalous libel, Benjamin began publishing The New-England Courant under his own name. He also wrote and published Poor Richard s Almanack in 1732 and numerous other books and articles throughout his life. Benjamin devoted himself to organizing and joining societies which contributed to the good of the community. One such society, which met his ideals, was the young organization known as Freemasonry. In 1731, Benjamin joined St. John s Lodge of Freemasons in Philadelphia. His Masonic education and involvement grew over the next 50 years as he served the Fraternity, not only as a member, but as Grand Master of Pennsylvania in He also served as the Provincial Grand Master of Pennsylvania in 1749 and joined the Masonic Lodge of the Nine Sisters in Paris, serving as its Venerable Master from His belief in a strong public school program established a direction for the Fraternity which still exists today. Benjamin believed the order of Freemasonry, as an organization, would allow him to continue his learning as continued on page three MESH Board Report It has been a busy six months at the Jennings McCall Center since our last report. The facility has a new administrator and chef, and phase four of building upgrades has begun. This phase involves the Independent Living side of the building and will take nine to 11 months to complete. The entryway, reception area and hallways will be remodeled and the result will be a beautiful testament of our continued support to our residents. 2 MESH Board Report continued from page one Phase Four of the Jennings McCall Center: LRS Architects concept of the Independent Living entrance. Our new administrator, Mr. Paul Silva, a Washington County resident, started his duties on Mar. 1. He is working closely with Mr. Mark Remley of Aidan Health Services and getting acquainted with the residents and staff. We currently have five LifeCare residents at the Home. Ms. Tammy Vanderzanden, MESHCare Program Manager, is doing an excellent job answering questions and points out services can be provided throughout the state, not just in Forest Grove. Ms. Danielle Christopherson, OutReach Services Director, currently has 82 cases. She is doing a great job using local services to help clients and provides financial assistance to Lodge and Eastern Star members in need. As this is my final report as Chairman of the MESH Board, I would like to personally thank the members of the Board and Trustees for their dedication and unswerving support. Many decisions were made this year, enhancing our goals of providing the best care and living environment to our residents. To this end, my heartfelt thanks. Fraternally, M.W.B. Don Stapleton, I.P.G.M., Chairman of the MESH Board Mason of the Month The Lecturer On Mar. 29, W.B. Cohen has presented the Master Mason Lecture, in addition to many Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft Lectures since his initiation into our Fraternity in To the best of my knowledge, W.B. Cohen has never turned down a request to present the Lectures, unless he was already engaged with another Lodge. His cheerful acceptance to present the Lectures has never wavered. W.B. Cohen is a Hiram Award recipient and has served as Worshipful Master of Vista Masonic Lodge No. 215 and Woodburn Lodge No He is a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite member and a member of the Royal Arch Masons. 3 Grand Master s Message, continued from page one well as foster his ideas of a free public education and representative government. During the 16th and 17th centuries, education was patterned after the European educational systems which were primarily for the wealthy. Women and Africans were not allowed to attend educational institutions, and the curriculum was based upon learning Latin and the classics of art and literature. Women were educated in the home and subjects taught included homemaking, social skills, music and Latin. Benjamin believed an educational system should focus on teaching practical subjects such as English, agriculture, science and accounting to improve the potential of all students. He organized a movement to influence modern education by establishing the Academy and College of Philadelphia in This establishment later became the University of Pennsylvania which still exists as a prestigious school of higher education. During the formation of the United States, Benjamin contributed to our American way of life in many ways. He established the U.S. Postal Service, set a direction for free public education and helped arrange a treaty with France in Today, Masonry believes, as Benjamin Franklin did, that a free public education is the key to a free society. History has shown educated people are a free people. This is a philosophy Masonry believes and supports to this day. The Grand Lodge of Oregon offers many programs aimed at encouraging schools, teachers and students to be involved, making the education experience better for all. Please become involved and help the local schools in your community. Fraternally, Arthur L. Ken Hall shared an article he found in the research papers of Research Lodge No. 198 about M.W.B. Berryman Jennings, the first Grand Master of Masons in Oregon. The article is quite interesting and informative, especially the inclusion of the following: The Grand Lodge, each year on the 30th Day in May, reverently places a wreath upon his grave in fraternal remembrance. On May 30, Research Lodge will carry on the tradition of honoring our first Grand Master at the centuryold Greenwood Hills Cemetery, the final resting place for M.W.B. Jennings and many early Oregon pioneers and prominent settlers of Portland. Platted in 1882, Greenwood Hills began as the Portland Masonic Cemetery and opened in 1884 with 15 graves transferred from the Masonic plot in Lone Fir Cemetery. The area is known as Palatine Hill and is host to several other cemeteries all founded in the late 1880s. Many of our ancient Brethren are resting in this cemetery. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in Section 1 of the Greenwood Hills Cemetery, 9002 SW Boones Ferry Rd., Portland. Parking is limited inside the gate. Additional parking is available across the street at the church on SW Boones Ferry and Palatine Hill Road. Carpooling is encouraged. Members of Research Lodge will be there to assist you in locating the monument. -by W.B. Daniel Gray May 2017 Page 3

5 Upcoming Programs Back to the Basics The Masonic year is quickly approaching. In our continued effort to keep the Brethren educated, we are returning to the basics. Over the past several years, we have witnessed a change in the structure of the Lodges. We are not seeing as many Worshipful Masters returning to serve another year. Because of this, it was decided to get back to the basics. During the next Masonic year, we will be returning to the Wardens Charges, a series of Charges aimed at the three primary officers of the Lodge. This will be an opportunity for the Senior Deacon and Wardens to learn what they need to know to successfully run their Lodge as they progress through the chairs. You will see the first Charge in January; a catch-up for the sitting Worshipful Masters, as we do not want to leave them out and lose a year of Lodge enhancement. In the spring, we will start with the Junior Warden s Charge, aimed at the Senior Deacons, the typical rotation office to the Junior Warden s chair. This will be followed by the Senior Warden s Charge, aimed at the sitting Junior Warden, the typical rotation to the Senior Warden s chair. Finally, the Worshipful Master s Charge, aimed at the sitting Senior Wardens. These Charges are intended for the respective sitting officers but are open to others wishing to further their education. The Charges will be held at the Jennings McCall Center in Forest Grove. The Grand Lodge Trustees encourage Lodge officers to attend and will offer some wonderful incentives to aid them. Dates will be available in the Grand Master s calendar. Fraternally, R.W.B. W. Gedlick shared some of his Masonic experiences, recounted his time with the Coast Guard and how that eventually led him to become a Mason. W.B. Gedlick has been a great promoter and helper of Cove Lodge, keeping the Brothers focused and strong in our work and Ritual, as well as helping rejuvenate the Lodge building. After the public presentation, we opened Lodge, escorted W.B. Gedlick to the East and afforded him the Public Grand Honors of Masonry. It was a great night of recognition and remembrance. - submitted by W.B. Brian Lackey Laurel Lodge No. 13 Bro. Donald Reed was presented his 65- year certificate and Jewel. Bro. 7 Klamath Lodge No. 77 The Brethren of Klamath Lodge recently honored outgoing Secretary, W.B. Arnold Ellis, for his 24 years of dedicated service to the Lodge. W.B. Ellis assumed the office at the request of the sitting Master at the time. The Worshipful Master asked W.B. Ellis if he would consider taking the office for two years, telling him it was an easy job, only taking about a half-hour per week. W.B. Ellis joked the Master may not have been totally truthful with him. W.B. Ellis is pictured holding the plaque presented to him by the Lodge during the Official Visit of the Grand Master, M.W.B. Arthur L. Borland. Annual Masonic Cleanup Greenwood Hills Cemetery Butte Creek Elementary School Robotics Program On Mar. 24, representatives from Silverton Lodge No. 45 and Molalla Lodge No. 178 attended an award assembly at Butte Creek Elementary School. Worshipful Master Chris Warren of Silverton Lodge, accompanied by W.B. John Lalicker; Bro. Marty Hardin, Junior Warden; and Bro. Paul Buckley, presented a $1000 check for the school s Robotics program. W.B. Warren hopes Silverton Lodge will be able to make yearly contributions to the Butte Creek Robotics program, supporting a small school doing so well with limited resources. Molalla Lodge was represented by Worshipful Master Mike Early, who presented two robotic kits to the school on behalf of the Lodge for their use in learning how to build robots. Three of the four robotics teams have earned spots in the Create U.S. Open Robotics event. The fourth-grade class is going to the world competition in Kentucky, where they will compete against high school students. Their accomplishments are astounding, especially given the size of the school and the lack of a well-funded program. Teacher Stacey Boost explained that she started the program as a short-term class that has morphed into a full-year effort, from which both she and the students gain a large amount of satisfaction. Butte Creek Elementary School represents the best attributes of our education system in a small, rural environment. They are a shining star of educational achievement, and the two Lodges were very happy to be able to recognize their efforts. - submitted by W.B. Michael E.
