1 Volume XXXIII No. 1, September 2015 The Grand Master s Message: A year for our youth My very first message of the year starts out with a big Thank You to the members of this jurisdiction for the honor of serving as your Grand Master. The Grand Lady, Pat and I are humbled at the opportunity to represent this Grand Lodge and its members as we travel throughout this state and other jurisdictions. The Grand Lodge Officers and District Deputies will do their utmost to engage you in our programs and welcome your comments for the betterment of our Fraternity. We are here to serve you, its members, and look forward to an exciting and rewarding Masonic year My pin this year depicts a video camera with the slogan, Spread the News Oregon Freemasonry Rocks. I spent 36 years as a Photojournalist for KATU-TV in Portland. That slogan is what I want the Masons of this state to embody spreading the news of the good work we are M.W.B. Don Stapleton Grand Master doing in our communities. Let them know our Masonic Fraternity is making a difference in the lives of so many of our friends and family. Spread that Brotherly Love, Relief & Truth to everyone, as this is our obligation. Pat s pin is a Tap Shoe, with the slogan, Step Up, Support Our Youth. The Grand Lady has taken tap dancing for many years and thought this would be a great way to promote our project. Pat and I met while she was Honored Queen of Job s Daughters and I was Master Councilor of DeMolay. Our fundraising efforts this year will benefit Oregon s Masonic youth groups: DeMolay, Job s Daughters and Rainbow for Girls. These pins and more are available for purchase at the Grand Lodge. In addition, we are also collecting cans and bottles for the youth. We are asking Lodges and individuals to support our fundraising efforts to help provide needed funds for youth members to attend leadership camps and annual sessions. continued on page two Educational Assistance Now accepting applications A new Masonic year is upon us and we must all start anew with our projects for the year. Whether you are a new Worshipful Master or a new Junior Deacon, we all must learn what lies ahead and forge on. The same goes for the Grand Lodge Officers, and this year I have the honor of working with Educational Assistance for eligible students within our Masonic Family. Let me start with an explanation of this program as the title can seem a R.W.B. Myles McMillan Senior Grand Warden little misleading. This is truly assistance, designated for educational and general living expenses of the families of eligible students. The goal of this assistance is to aid the families of Master Masons so their children and grandchildren may not be hindered in seeking their education. Let me repeat this, this is assistance to the families to help the students succeed. 2 Grand Master s Message, continued from page one Looking back at the first three months of this Masonic year, it was off to the races with three official visits in the first week after the Annual Communication. Pearl Lodge No. 66 hosted the Ole Timers Night, a great event with home cookin and a Mark Twain rendition by the Grand Master of New Mexico; then it was the Annual Strawberry Feed at Gresham Lodge No. 152 and the Wild Game Dinner at Umatilla Lodge No. 40. We traveled up to Kennewick for the Grand Lodge of Washington and then off to Orlando, Florida for the 95th International Sessions and 48th Congress of DeMolay. It was an absolutely fantastic event with DeMolays from around the world. I was one of two sitting Grand Masters to be present, along with M.W.B. Art Shoemaker of Idaho, there supporting Derek Sprague, Grand Master of DeMolay, who is from Oregon & Idaho. Next, it was back to Oregon for Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Grand Assembly for the International Rainbow for Girls, where the DeMolay and Grand Lodge participated in the crowning ceremony. The Fourth of July was indeed a celebration as we traveled to Houston, Texas for the Imperial Session of the Shrine. Our participation with the Divan of Al Kader Shrine was outstanding and both Pat and I truly appreciate the lasting friendships we have developed by attending these events. The activities continued with the Oregon Masonic Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament and two very special events, the Constitution of Enlightenment Lodge No. 228 and the 150th Anniversary celebration of Rainier Lodge No. 24. The month of July ended with the East-West Shrine Football game in Baker City. The Grand Lodge of Wyoming, the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite in Washington D.C. and the Malheur Cave Outdoor Degree were definitely memorable events that rounded out a very busy summer. I want to thank all the Brothers that participated in the many activities during the last three months. We welcome your suggestions and encourage your individual Lodges to make your meetings fun and rewarding, not only for the newer Masons but also for those that have contributed so much to your Lodge over the years. Brotherly Love, Relief & Truth and living your Masonic obligations each and every day will make this year one that we can all be very proud of. Fraternally, Don Stapleton, Grand Master of A.F. & A.M. of Oregon Let s be a Mason every day, not only on Tuesday night; For it s being a Mason all the while, that gives our Craft its Light. Ronald Hahn, Alt Heidelberg Lodge No. 821, Trestleboard, March 1961 Bundle up in your Masonic Pride As Fall approaches, wrap up with a thick fleece Masonic Pride jacket or vest. Proceeds benefit our Masonic Youth Groups. They come in black and red and are still available in a variety of sizes S-4X, and cost $32-35, respectively. The Grand Lodge can certainly ship them to you, so give us a call to place an order for your Masonic Pride today! Call now! (503) Mason-supported Low 12 assistance A Letter to our Wives; Ladies, Oregon Freemasonry has an organization called Low 12. Its purpose is to enable our members to meet the Masonic obligation to aid the widows and orphans of our passed Brethren. This program provides immediate financial help to the designated person upon the notification the death of our Masonic Brother. It is during this time of sorrow that unforeseen expenses may occur. By having your husband participate in Low 12, he will be meeting his obligation not only to you but the other members of the Masonic Family that may be assisted. Currently, we are able to provide $500 to a surviving spouse or family. This is not an insurance policy; but a method for Masons to come to the aid of the family. An application is required to participate and is can be acquired by contacting Jay Raymond at (503) or Jerald Schierling at (503) or via jschierling@comcast.net. The fee associated with participation is $10 for the application and $50 annually. These funds go directly into the maintenance of the program and funding for qualified families. Join today and get a discounted annual fee for the 2015 year. Please take a moment to discuss this with your husband. Page 2 September 2015

3 Educational Assistance, continued from page one or food for the table, this is truly family assistance. If you are an Oregon Master Mason in good standing, and have children or grandchildren attending a public school (K-12) or post high school (through age 22), your family may be able to benefit from this program. Whether they live within the state or not, do not hesitate as time is critical and dollars are limited. To qualify, applicants must: 1) be the child or grandchild of an Oregon Master Mason (living or deceased); 2) attend a public school K-12 or if under the age of 23, a public post high school; and 3) show there is truly a need for this assistance through personal interviews, educational requirements (GPA), and proof of income and expenses of the family. These details must be verified and of course are kept strictly confidential. Time is of extreme importance, so do not hesitate to apply. Funding is based on the nine month school year and amounts vary depending on family need, up to as much as $300 per child, per month with a maximum $600 per family. The deadline for K-12 applications is Dec. 31, and post high school applications are due by Jan 31. Members may find a request for application form (30.1) in the protected forms list on the Grand Lodge website, You can also reach out to a local Lodge or District Deputy for assistance. Oregon Freemasons have supported public education from our very beginning, and we are still committed today as strongly as ever. Last year over $90,000 was given out to families in need. We remain dedicated to this service and want to help the children and grandchildren of our Masonic family. - by R.W.B. W. Lyle Logan MMSAP just in time for Fall In preparation for the 2015 school year, packets of information are being prepared to be mailed to Oregon Lodges regarding the Masonic Model Student Assistance Program. Lodges are encouraged to use this information to ensure participation of your local schools in the session. The upcoming session is scheduled for Oct , the second MMSAP offered in 2015 by the Oregon Masonic Charitable Foundation. Educators are welcome to attend and better prepare to help at-risk children. At this writing, twenty spaces remain for the October training and Lodge members should consider how to best approach local schools to enlist participation. We love to welcome new faces to the program and spread the positive impact of this successful material to as many schools and children as possible. A letter regarding the Jennings McCall Center As you may have heard we are getting ready to start an expansion of our Memory Care as the need for this specialized offering has continued to grow. This project will consist of three phases. The first phase will be a refresh of six apartments; these refreshed apartments have been reserved for residents who will be moving out of the south wing on the second floor. The second phase will be a remodel of the second floor south wing; this will become the Progressive Care Unit (PCU). It will be remodeled to hold a capacity of six residents and feature a dining and activity area. Phase three will be the Memory Care expansion. The current PCU on the first floor will be remodeled to accommodate an additional thirteen Memory Care residents. This will be a combination of private rooms with private baths and also private rooms with shared baths. The Memory Care will still be one secured unit, able to continue to serve more memory care residents. I will continue to update everyone as the project progresses, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time. 6 Blue Lodge Ritual Instruction Five sessions available locally On Saturday, Oct. 24, a new Blue Lodge Ritual course will be held in several locations including: Portland, Salem, North Bend, Medford and La Grande. The sessions will run 8:30-4 p.m. and are open to all members of the Lodge. Many of you, throughout the years, have attended a Basic School of Instruction, a step which is required if you wish to read for an individual proficiency card. In the Basic School, you are reminded of the proper words and actions that comprise the opening and closing rituals of the three degrees. Skillful execution of these ritual components will set the tone for a solemn and serious Lodge meeting or degree conferral. It is only natural, then, that we extend the instruction to include the entire working of the degree, as many of you have requested on numerous occasions. The new expanded Blue Lodge Ritual Instruction will devote three hours to the conferral of the Entered Apprentice degree. In great detail, we will examine the floor work and dialogue of the Stewards, the Deacons, the Wardens, and the Worshipful Master. In the afternoon, after a supplied lunch, there will be five to six classes offered to all members of the Lodge, covering new subjects developed by the Education Committee. The information will focus on what the committee feels are important subjects to Lodge and individual growth. Further detail will be announced. When you attend, be sure to bring a copy of the current ritual book (Form 200, available from the Grand Lodge office) or plan to purchase a copy at the event. Space is limited so register early, fee is only $15 for pre-registration and $20 at the door. - by W.B. Robert L. Fountain, Grand Lecturer Mason of the Month Brethren, there s no denying it is nice to be recognized for the good works we do, not only in Lodge but also in the community. This year we are giving you the opportunity to do just that. The Grand Lodge welcomes you to nominate that Mason who, in your experience, exemplifies what it is to be a Mason. To do so, we ask that you submit a short bio on the Brother (500 words or less) and send it to our Senior Grand Deacon, Ron Eggers by to ron.eggers44@gmail.com. Submissions must be received by W.B. Eggers before the fifth of the month to be considered for that month s award. All entries will be reviewed by the Trustees and one nominee will be selected each month through May, Out of those nine, one will be selected as the Mason of the Year. That individual will be featured in the Oregon Masonic News and presented with a plaque. There are countless Masons out there working tirelessly for their Lodge. Please nominate a Brother today. 7 In Loving Memory CAROLYN MAE JUDAH May 2, 1924 to July 16, 2015 Carolyn and her husband, now passed, Bro. Sampson Judah (Holbrook No. 30), were the very first members of the MESHCare program. She had lived in the Home for over 4 years. Masons rededicate Turner City Hall The city of Turner was named for and originally platted in 1871 by Henry L. Turner, who arrived in this area in As the town began to take shape, the Masonic Lodge was begun in 1874 and chartered in 1875, thirty years before the town of Turner was Incorporated in Three of the first four mayors of Turner were members of Pearl Lodge No. 66, which was named for the baby daughter of the town s second mayor and our chartering Lodge Secretary. The landscape of town has changed significantly since those early years. The only building in view of City Hall is the old two-story Masonic Lodge building, which was constructed in 1888 by a member of Pearl Lodge and our records show it even survived the Columbus Day storm without losing a single shingle. Thanks to all who attended and we invite you to help us celebrate Pearl Lodge s 150th anniversary in ten years. - by W.B. Stanley Miller + September 2015 Page 7

8 Highlights of Annual Communication: A good ol Masonic Family time The 2015 Annual Communication featured many entertaining and heart-warming moments. Again, the Brotherly Love and sense of family between the Masonic groups was a joy to experience during these and many other instances: Toe-Tapping Bluegrass: Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising entertained with a highenergy bluegrass show. Hailing from Tualatin, Ore. the group is familiar with the local Masonic Family (Ms. Boyd was even a Rainbow Girl). What a treat! Mason of the Year: M.W.B. Wick presented this prestigious award to R.W.B. J. J. Fontana for his years of dedicated service to the Fraternity and our Jurisdiction. A roar of applause welcomed R.W.B. Fontana to the stage. Boy Scout award: Bro. Fred Linton of Maple Lodge No. 127 was presented with the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award, given to Masons who have been very active in Scouting. M.W.B. 9 Lodge safety Get your AED today Now is the time to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and save 50 percent. The Grand Lodge Trustees have approved a new program to share the cost of several units between local Lodges and Grand Lodge. The program began with a $5,000 budget for this fiscal year. OMN + 150th Anniversary of Rainier Lodge On this historic occasion, the sesquicentennial anniversary celebration of Rainier Lodge s founding, W.B. Thomas D. Pierce addressed attendees of the event: One hundred and fifty years in the life of any institution is significant, but for a Masonic Lodge it is remarkable because of the regenerative work Freemasonry is engaged in. Rainier Lodge has been actively seeking to transform its members from good men to outstanding men. The original isolation of the town inspired reliance on one another for the Masons and community of Rainier. Their history has been marked by diligent and humble work in the quarries of Freemasonry and Rainier Lodge has always endeavored to embrace those timeless Masonic principles of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. 10 NEWS FROM OUR LODGES Beaverton Masonic Lodge No. 100 On May 7, 2015, the members of Beaverton Masonic Lodge held their biennial Widow s Night Dinner. Five spouses of departed Brethren were in attendance, as well as many spouses of our current membership. Our widows were presented with flowers and enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the young ladies of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Meridian Assembly #80. The Rainbow Assembly then performed their Ribbon Ceremony recognizing Freemasons and the appendant bodies of the Masonic Family. W.M. Tom Binkerd spoke from the heart about how important it is to a Mason to have the loving support of a spouse. The evening culminated with short speeches and reflections by the widows on their Masonic heritage and experiences. - by W.B. Burow Tigard-Orenomah Lodge No. 207 Tigard-Orenomah Lodge No. 207 conducted a Colonial Festive Board with forty-two Masons in attendance. The purpose of this Festive Board or ritual Masonic dinner was to recreate the atmosphere of Masonic dinners of the Colonial era when Brothers enjoyed good food, spirits and song, all while hearing an educational presentation and holding discussion afterward. By all accounts, the Lodge succeeded in recreating this old custom and the attendees were uplifted. There was a broad representation of Lodges with nine sitting Masters in attendance as well as two Past Grand Masters and two District Deputies. Portland s own renowned chef, Sarah Schafer of Irving Street Kitchen masterfully crafted a meal from local ingredients reminiscent of the Colonial period. A feast of rosemary-sage free-range chicken, baked Yankee beans, green salad, cornbread and Boston CreamPie was served. A fine lager accompanied it. W.B. Thomas Pierce crafted a program for the evening s toasting inspired by 18th Century rituals. W.B. Frank Blair of Union Lodge No. 3 (above) performed period music and expertly presented each piece explaining its origin. The highlight of the evening was Bro. Birol Yesilada s presentation, The Influence of Freemasonry on the Nation s Founders and the discussion our good Brother led afterward. Tigard-Orenomah Lodge will hold its German Festive Board on Oct. 28 and details will be forthcoming. Page 10 September 2015

11 Vista Masonic Lodge No. 215 On June 23, 2015, Vista Masonic Lodge No. 215 was part of the Keizer Community Fun Day. While doing the Child ID program, we had the privilege of having the King of Rock n Roll stop by to lend his support for this program. Elvis commented on the importance of this program and wished us the best. Our Lodge processed about 70 kids and the program was very well-received by the crowd. North Bend Lodge No by W.B. Jerry Schierling The Brethren of North Bend Lodge No. 140 got a surprise at a recent Stated Meeting! During Good of the Order, the Senior Warden requested permission of W.M. Charles O. Cornell, for the Deacons to Pay the Craft their Wages. Receiving permission, the Deacons passed out to each Brother in attendance a beautiful Masonic coin 1-3/4 in diameter displaying the Square & Compasses on one side and on the other symbols depicting three things representative of the North Bend/ Coos Bay area: a Saw-Blade encircling a representation of the McCullough Bridge and a Three-Masted Ship. The coin was designed and purchased by the Worshipful Master and each Brother who attends a Stated Meeting of the Lodge may be presented with one. - by M.W.B. John H. Smith, P.G.M. Eugene Lodge No. 11 On Saturday, May 23, 2015, seven Members of Eugene Lodge No. 11, met at the Garden Cottage of the Eugene Masonic Cemetery for an open house tour of the grounds and Hope Abby Mausoleum. There was a special, annual cornet playing of Taps by a Vietnam veteran, Adrian Vaaler, in the Public Square (shown at right with W.B. Lloyd Henson and Bro. Frank Argun). An impersonator of President Lincoln was present following the playing of Taps on this 150th anniversary of the Civil War. One hundred forty-one members of Eugene Lodge No. 11 are buried or interred in the ten acre cemetery which, unlike more common lawn cemeteries, is a pioneer forested venue with walking paths and trails community members use for daily walks. Members of Eugene Chapter Order of DeMolay also volunteer as a community service project. The Lodge members (shown below) who met at the Garden Cottage, left to right are: Frank Argun, W.B. Fred Hasse (#195), David Wagner, Anthony Hale, W.B. Rich Maris, W.M. Zack Blalack, Terin Mueller, and W.B. Lloyd Henson. Clatskanie Lodge No. 133 The Clatskanie Lodge membership has been working with Clatskanie Elementary School in the Bikes-for-Books program for ten years. Again this year Clatskanie has awarded four bikes to two girls and two boys. It started slowly with 115 students in the first year (2005) and has now increased to 221 out of 340 students, 65 percent of the student body in It has been rewarding to note that the names of students in the program often appear later on the honors lists for Middle and High Schools. It would be nice to attribute that in part due to early reading skills. - by W.B. Art Robare September 2015 Page 11

The Jennings McCall Center hosts a summertime full of fun The Jennings McCall Center has developed a list of fun activities for the residents and employees to partake in this summer. A representative team attended the Relay for Life walk celebrating cancer survivors, a complimentary wheelchair wash was offered, Crazy Hat Day was a creative outlet for the residents, a race of mini-boats was enthusiastically cheered on and some lucky managers got a pie in the face (for a good cause, funds raised to benefit the Relay for Life). The Jennings McCall staff, particularly the Life Enrichment Coordinator, Rebekah Cormier and management, led the coordination of these events to ensure the residents have a variety of activities to choose from to get involved and remain active within the close-knit community.
