2 WELCOME TO STETSON UNIVERSITY Welcome to Stetson University and your official start to life as a Hatter! I am so excited to be one of the first people to welcome you to your new home. My name is Samantha Fink and I serve as the FOCUS Orientation Student Coordinator. Over the summer, I worked to help organize this wonderful orientation experience for you and your family. In the days to come, you will begin your journey as a Hatter. This is your first opportunity to become fully immersed in our community and we are so happy you are here. 18 Appendices APPENDIX A Spirit & Traditions Brief History Stetson University was founded in 1883 as Deland Academy by Henry Addison DeLand, a New York philanthropist, and is Florida s oldest private college. In 1884, DeLand Hall, Stetson s first academic building, was constructed at a cost of $4,000. Today, DeLand Hall houses the University s Office of the President and is the oldest building in Florida in continuous use for higher education. The beautiful Stetson campus would have never been built without the support of others. Early in the university s history, a sudden cold snap froze the orange crops that Mr. DeLand had guaranteed. This caused a severe financial loss for Mr. DeLand, the university s primary benefactor. Founding trustee and hat manufacturer John B. Stetson stepped in to save the college from financial ruin. DeLand Academy s name was changed in 1889 to honor his donations. The Stetson hat, an American symbol of progress, hard work and independence, would become the university s official icon. Since its establishment, Stetson University has been known for its values of service learning and rigorous academics, and has become one of the nation s premier Liberal Arts institutions. School Colors As Florida s first private university, Stetson has shared a storied history with the state. To honor this heritage, Stetson s official colors are green and white. These are the same colors as the state s official flower, the orange blossom. Cheers Go Green! Fight White! Whenever you hear, Go Green! you must respond, Fight White! This cheer sometimes takes place during athletics contests as well. One side of the stadium will yell, Go Green! The other side will respond, Fight White! This cheer will sometimes go on for several minutes. One Stetson! Similar to Go Green! Fight White!, One Stetson is another great stadium cheer. One Stetson is also a reminder that although Stetson is made of many individuals, it is a single community that supports one another. One side says, One, and the other responds, Stetson. 18 P T M PARENTS/FAMILIES ONLY TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY MUSIC STUDENTS ONLY

Emblazoned on the bell is a statement that reads, Victory comes from doing your best. School Ring: The ring is a symbol that binds all Stetson graduates. Students are eligible to purchase a ring after achieving 62 credit hours. Tradition says that if students do not dunk the ring in Holler Fountain the first time they wear it, they will not graduate.
