2 WELCOME TO ROLLINS! Rollins School of Public Health Mission The mission of the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) of Emory University is to demonstrate excellence in the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge as it trains and supports future leaders in health promotion and disease prevention through organized community efforts around the world. New Student Orientation Purpose The Purpose of New Student Orientation is to prepare students for academic success by connecting them with the resources and information necessary to fulfill the RSPH Mission. Health is created and lived by people within the settings of their everyday life; where they learn, work, play and love. Health is created by caring for oneself and others, by being able to make decisions and have control over one s life circumstances, and by ensuring that the society one lives in creates conditions that allow the attainment of health by all its members. WHO Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, 1986

8 Monday, August 22 nd ROLLINS-TEER DAY OF SERVICE Public Health is just as much about social justice as it is about health and wellness. As part of Fall Orientation, each incoming student participates in a morning of service around metro Atlanta. Students work with local organizations that focus on poverty, homelessness, chronic disease, and environmental conservation. The goal of the Rollins-teer Service Day is to provide public health students with an opportunity to "learn while doing", so they can begin to think about how to tackle issues that adversely affect thousands of people in Atlanta. Ideally, students may stay connected to these and other local organizations throughout their MPH program to complete course projects, the practicum or other practical experiences, or volunteer service. At the conclusion of the day, students will have the opportunity to share their experiences with other students and RSPH faculty and staff at the Rollins SGA Lunch (Cookout Extravaganza!). Student Organizations and campus representatives will also host information tables so that students learn more about how to connect and engage throughout the year. 8:00 a.m. 8:30 a.m. Meet with Site Leaders for Breakfast RSPH Outside Plaza: Area in front of the Grace Crum Rollins and Claudia Nance Rollins Buildings 8:30 a.m. Shuttle to Sites 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Service Activity * Designated Sites 12:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Cookout Extravaganza! & Student Activities Resource Fair Sponsored by the Office of Admissions and Student Services and Rollins SGA RSPH Outside Plaza Come out for an afternoon of fun brought to you by RSGA!
