The program includes music of all styles - traditional holiday favorites, Broadway tunes, popular songs, moving anthems, and stirring spirituals. Senior Tech Tips - IRS Tax Scam In a press release issued on August 2, 2016, the Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers about a recent increase in telephone scams that involve callers and robocallers impersonating the IRS. According to the statement, the real IRS WILL NEVER: Call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without first sending a bill in the mail. Demand tax payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed. Require that taxes be paid in a certain way, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. Ask for your credit or debit card number over the phone. Threaten to bring in the local police or other agencies to arrest you for nonpayment. If you receive a suspicious call about your taxes and do not owe taxes or do not have reason to think that you do, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal information. Contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Visit their website at to report the incident or call You should also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission by calling FTC HELP ( ) or go to Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your report. If you think you may owe taxes, call the IRS at IRS employees can help you. Intergenerational Breakfast with Santa Save the date: Saturday, December 17, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Plan to bring your grandchildren to the Center for a very special morning event. 3 Armchair Tour - India Monday, November 7, 12:30 p.m. This tour illustrates the 36 years host Barbara Parthasarathy has spent traveling in India. We will visit five states in India (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu). Our journey begins at the Taj Mahal and continues with visits to several cities, a hunt for geographical confluence, and the canals of Kerala, known as the Venice of India. Finally, we will attend a wedding in the largest city in south India, Chennai (Madras). Armchair Tour - Iceland Wednesday, November 16, 12:30 p.m. Only six hours from Baltimore via WOW Airlines, Iceland is a unique and exciting travel destination. Its summers are surprisingly warm, though it lies just below the Arctic Circle. Add geysers, glaciers, volcanoes, a rugged coastline, and hundreds of waterfalls to this remarkable mix, and that s what Iceland offers. There is a slight problem, though. The place names and surnames are all but unpronounceable and equally hard to remember. Join host Bill Cramer for this rare treat. Zumba Gold Mondays, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m. Zumba Gold takes fitness to the next level by moving to Latin dance music. You don t have to know how to dance. Just follow certified instructor Sharon McCarroll and have fun. There are two classes from which to choose. Classes start the week of November 14 and continue for eight weeks. The cost is $33 for residents and $39 for nonresidents. BioFitness Aerobics Class Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, 9:00-10:00 a.m. This fun, low-impact exercise program is choreographed to music. Join certified instructor Jill Snellings for a 60-minute cardio class that is designed specifically for seniors. Classes will begin the week of November 8 and continue for six weeks. The two-day-a-week class cost for residents is $30 and $34 for nonresidents. A one-day-a-week class is also available for $15 for residents and $18 for nonresidents. 9 Wellness Helping Caregivers Plan for the Holidays The holidays can be a challenging time for caregivers and their families. Advanced planning and deciding where to celebrate the holidays are two key factors in having an enjoyable holiday season. The cognitive level of your loved one is an important consideration when making holiday plans. If the person is alert, oriented, and physically independent, you will have more flexibility. However, if the person has been diagnosed with a form of dementia, the following information may be helpful. During the early stages of most dementias, memory is intact. They are able to recognize relatives, family members, homes, and enjoy the celebrations. Due to familiarity with past holiday visiting routines, participating in the planning can be beneficial. In the moderate stages, memory and level of independence decline. This can present challenges and require more planning. The decline in memory and function requires a caregiver to take an honest look at the person s status. Asking for input and cooperation from family members and friends is important when planning for the holidays. Try to maintain a normal routine and remember the three S s: Simple plan, Small gathering, and Short duration. If you are going to include your loved one in the holiday celebrations, remember: Talk to their physician about medication adjustments and traveling concerns. Understand that behavioral and personality changes can worsen in unfamiliar surroundings. Wandering is a very real concern. Take into account the person s mobility when determining travel plans. Returning home can be very disorienting, even after a brief absence. A brief celebration at your loved one's home or facility with a few familiar family and friends, plus a separate larger family celebration, may make more sense. Be sure to take care of yourself and your own needs. In the later stages, the three S's are very important. Your loved one may not be able to participate in a meaningful way. Any celebration should be in a familiar environment. Finally, do not let guilt or pressure from others get in the way of making appropriate plans. Trust your instincts because you know your loved one best. Rosemary Allender, LCSW-C, LICSW Owner, Family Eldercare Management If you are a caregiver who is looking for more help and support, be sure to check out our monthly Caregiver Support group led by Rosemary on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. Opioid Pain Medications and You Thursday, November 3, 10:30-11:30 a.m. According to WebMD, in 2007 there were about 1.7 million people abusing or addicted to prescription painkillers. While these medications can be highly beneficial, they also come with risks and side effects. In some parts of our state, the use of heroin can be as high as 1 in 10. What may not be as commonly known is that, at times, heroin use can begin after people become addicted to their pain meds. Join us as Priority Partners gives this important talk so you can be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of abuse, as well as learning how to determine if one is becoming addicted. Learn how to save a life. It could be yours. November

10 Information Services Information & Referral Services Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Center offers assistance to seniors in the community by providing information and referrals in areas such as health care, finance, family issues, housing options, and many others. Come to the Center or call for an appointment. Printed resources are also available. This year-round outreach service is available to help equip seniors and their families with vital information that they need to live the life they choose. Each month a different informative presentation is given at the Center through the Fireside Chat program. An additional information-packed evening program is also offered each month through the Hot Topics program. Fireside Chat: Your Vote Matters Tuesday, November 8, 11:00 a.m. As the 2016 campaign heats up, one story that is being largely ignored is how voter turnout will affect policy. Although many people - particularly senior citizens - believe that their vote does not matter, new research suggests that nothing could be further from the truth. Come out on Election Day and hear the statistics of the voter turnout and how your vote matters. Hot Topics: Pearls, Pumps, and Jeans Tea Talk Tuesday, November 15, 5:45-6:45 p.m. What great fun we will have when we come dressed in our pearls, pumps, and jeans to hear poetry, both original and famous. If you wish to dress in the attire, it will be fun or come as you are and join in this hour of relaxing and learning. You may even recite your own poetry. Let s listen to poetry together while the tea warms our hearts. Open to the public and another opportunity to socialize.
