1 Bowie Senior Center October 2016 All Around the Center News - Events - Activities - Classes - Schedules - Services Bowie Health Fair Saturday, October 15, 11 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The annual Bowie Health Fair will be held in October. At various locations along Health Center Drive, starting at the Bowie Gymnasium and ending at Dimensions Healthcare, the fair will offer the community numerous free screenings and services, such as cholesterol, diabetes, massage, nutrition counseling, flu vaccines, EKGs, and much more. Health and wellness exhibitors will be on hand with information displays. Also, be sure to join us for a lecture on quick and easy healthy meals by the Center s Wellness Coordinator Mark Shields. You can get more info at Falling In Love... in the Fall Show Friday, October 28, 12:30 p.m. Entertainer Charles Sullivan, tenor extraordinaire, returns with some of your favorite songs from the Great American Songbook about falling in love, and we know you will love this concert. It celebrates great composers and performers of popular American love songs, giving one of today s brightest vocal talents the chance to shine in styles ranging from big-band sounds, blues, broadway, jazz, and pop from the 1920s through the 1960s, from Johnny Mathis and Frank Sinatra to Patsy Cline and Doris Day - all in one show. At this performance, styles converge, standing firmly at the intersection of historic music and popular artists. Hear their songs and a little of the story of each towering talent s life. The fee is $3 for residents and $4 for nonresidents. Please register by October 24. SAGE: Continuing Education Class Registration Fall semester begins the week of October 3. SAGE (Seasoned Adults Growing Educationally) classes are designed to help keep both mind and body active and engaged. Our creative, competent, and caring faculty enrich your classroom experience and the camaraderie of like-minded peers is both stimulating and supportive. The Center is fortunate to partner with Prince George s Community College in offering a variety of over 70 classes that are held at our facility each week. Students may choose classes in the following topics: languages, exercise, history, writing, literature, music, art, healthy living, and more. In addition to registering for your favorite classes, consider trying something new. Complete registration information and class descriptions are available at the Center s front lobby. There are three ways to register: in person at the college, by mail, or online through Owl Link which is the preferred method. A $75 registration fee is payable to PGCC for Maryland residents age 60 and over. Students are responsible for purchasing their own class supplies.

Senior Tech Tips - Cookies Many commercial websites use cookies to store information that you have provided. Whenever you customize a site (such as specifying which city for which you want weather updates or entering a password to access that website), your computer remembers the information by setting a cookie - a small file saved on your computer's hard drive. Then, the next time you visit that website, you automatically get information that is geared specifically to you. All this is done behind the scenes. Cookie files are harmless since they can't hold viruses or other codes that might be damaging to your computer. However, some users view them as an invasion of privacy and with good reason. In general, websites cannot share cookies with each other or get more than just basic information about your surfing preferences. However, there have been some reports of cookies being used to create user profiles, with information as detailed as the URL of the page you were last viewing. Websites may also use these profiles in order to present you with banner advertisements that are customized to your interests. If you are so inclined, you can choose to: 1. Turn off ALL cookies. 2. Set your computer so it accepts cookies ONLY from certain websites. 3. Set your computer so that you get "prompted" before a cookie gets planted on your computer. (Warning: This approach becomes tiresome very quickly, since almost every website you visit these days wants to plant a cookie on your computer.) 4. Delete your cookie files without harming your ability to surf the web (although you will have to reenter passwords, etc., every time you revisit your favorite sites). In some internet browsers, you can find these settings under Tools/Options. In Edge, these options can be found in the browser Settings. October

9 Wellness Bowie Health Fair Special Offerings - Mark Shields, Wellness Coordinator One of the most common complaints I hear from members about visiting the doctor is that it all seems so rushed. With increased work demands on physicians these days, they often can t spend as much time with patients as either party would like. Well, now s your chance to have some time with a doctor to have your most pressing questions answered. At the upcoming Bowie Health Fair on Saturday, October 15, there will be several opportunities for you to engage with a doctor either in a group setting or one-on-one. Dr. Stephanie Trifoglio, who is board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics, will have open discussion periods. The community brings questions and it generates both answers and more questions from others in the group. One topic leads to another and a lively discussion ensues. The group is limited to 20 people. Registration assures a space, but walk-ins will be welcomed if space is available. To register, please call There will also be oneon-one Ask a Doc stations at the Dimensions Surgery Center. At various times, a cardiologist, an OB-GYN doctor, and emergency and family medicine doctors will be available. Speaking of rushed lives, a big hurdle for many trying to improve their health is eating better while being short on time. If you re looking for some quick and easy meal options to improve your health or help weight loss, join us at noon during the health fair at the Bowie Senior Center where I will be giving a talk on the subject. This will be an interactive session so the group can share their ideas as well so others may benefit. It s time to simplify nutrition. Flu Vaccines It is that time of year again to start thinking about getting your flu vaccine. There are several options. The annual Bowie Health Fair which will be held on Saturday, October 15, will have 200 vaccines available for free on a first-come-first-served basis. The vaccines will be administered at the Bowie Gymnasium. The fair starts at 11:00 a.m., but it is advisable to arrive early. The Safeway pharmacy at the Bowie Town Center also offers free vaccines for seniors who have Medicare Part B. Many health insurances will also cover the cost. So, feel free to call the pharmacy at to confirm your insurance coverage. Here are some tips to avoid getting or spreading the flu: Try to avoid close contact with sick people. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Please do not work out while you have the flu. Not only can it endanger the life of others, it can make your symptoms worse and even be fatal. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way. Be extra cautious when in a gym setting. For example, use the inside of your shirt when you need to rub your eyes. Healthy Weight Basics Thursday, October 27, 10:30 a.m. Join us as Wallace Merriman, a local personal trainer, discusses the basics of achieving a healthy weight. With so many fad diets and misinformation in the media and online, it can be difficult to determine the safest and most effective way to manage your weight through nutrition. This workshop will cover the basic concepts of achieving a healthy weight loss, along with strategies for making it happen. October

Fireside Chat: Seniors Matter - Gloria Gaddy Tuesday, October 11, 11:00 a.m. In my work as Service Information & Referral Specialist, I sometimes wonder how those of us in the industry can continually improve our focus on the goals and preferences of the people we serve. We all are passionate about making a difference in the lives of seniors and family caregivers; but, sometimes I am concerned that the day-to-day realities of business and policy can distract from what really matters to them. We will chat about dignity, independence, and successfully aging in place. Please join us and bring someone with you. Hot Topics: Are you Prepared for the Next Disaster? Tuesday, October 18, 5:45-6:45 p.m. Preparing makes sense for older Americans. Get ready now.
