Bowie Seniors Computer Clubs The Bowie Seniors Computer Club and the Apple Computer Club hosted by the Center are two excellent resources for information regarding computers and other electronic equipment. Let Your Voice Be Heard Thursday, February 8, 10 a.m. noon Join the City of Bowie s Office of Grant Development and Administration for a community outreach meeting at the Center as we seek your input in the development of a five-year planning document called the Consolidated Plan for Community Development. As an entitlement community, the City of Bowie is eligible to participate in the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The city is responsible for creating the consolidated plan to ensure consideration for CDBG grant funding. We embrace the premise that residents affected by programs and activities funded through the CDBG program have opinions and expertise that enhance the planning process. To this end, the city encourages and solicits input in defining housing, community development, and public service needs for the benefit of low- and moderate-income families who reside in Bowie. Feel free to view the draft of the Citizen Participation Plan at fiveyearplan that will provide guidance for public input and participation in the development and implementation process. For questions, call Charnette Holland, City of Bowie grant writer, at Looking for a Job? Starting in February, the Center will be able to help seniors search for jobs. In partnership with the Prince George s County American Job Center Community Network, seniors 55 and older who are interested in finding employment will be able to register on the Maryland Workforce Exchange ( and search for employment opportunities. Center staff and volunteers who have been trained to support this service will be available for help on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the computer classroom. 2 City of Bowie Senior Center

9 Love Your Heart Month Wellness Wellness Coordinator, Mark Shields February is National Heart Health month. To keep your New Year s resolution of improving your health, here are some quick tips to keep your heart healthy. Decrease trans-fats, also known as partially hydrogenated oils, in your diet. These are typically found in highly processed prepackaged foods to help increase shelf life. Walk more. It s one of the simplest and lowest cost ways to be healthier. See the next tip and combine them to really boost your heart health. Spend time outside. There s just something about being outdoors in nature that reinvigorates us and reduces stress. Floss regularly. Our oral health is a good marker for overall heart health status, both directly and indirectly. Include nuts in your diet if you re not allergic. These contain some protein, as well as heart-healthy fats. Know your numbers. Two key ones to focus on are blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Spend time with animals. Studies have shown that simply petting a dog can help lower blood pressure, as well as release feel good chemicals in the brain. Not only that, it s been shown to be beneficial for the dog. Ongoing Exercise Activities at the Center Aquatic Exercise at Sport Fit Bowie Aquatic exercise provides a low-impact setting in shallow water which builds strength and endurance. Your body s natural buoyancy minimizes pressure or strain on working muscles and joints.
