2 Upcoming Events and Holidays Spring Break March 14th 18th Staff Easter Egg Roll Wednesday, March 23rd United Way Spring Carnival at Temple High School Saturday, April 2nd Temple ISD Education Career Fair at Temple High School Saturday, April 16th Legislative Update TEA has now added the special education STAAR A test results under the Category 4 for accountability (college readiness). Open Carry has impacted college campuses and I feel that this will be coming up for public schools as well. Vouchers will be coming back during the next legislative session. If you are a member of a professional organization please look for these. School Finance Litigation the Texas Supreme Court justices truly listened to testimony and according to the Equity Center that are expecting a ruling within the next few weeks. The Supreme Court can return this to the lower district court whereby Governor Abbott has said that he would appoint a 3 judge panel to hear the case or the Supreme Court can make a ruling which would send a directive to the Legislature that we have an unconstitutional school finance system and that they need to deliver law to fix it. The law would then be interpreted by the Texas Education Agency. Accountability System: The A-F system and too much testing will be under fire Leadership Training Cohort Candidate Campus/Dept Bond, Amanda Bonham Dennis-Witter, Traci C&I Chandler, Tonya Cater Wolf, Ken Finance & Ops Jones, April Garcia Anderson, Brittany Jefferson Lopez, Laura Kennedy-Powell Manning, Hannah Scott Collins, Lamar Temple High Wireman, Amanda Thornton Saunders, Leticia Western Hills
3 Florence ISD spent time at Garcia Elementary and said it was amazing! They said they were "really pumped to spruce up the bilingual program in Florence."! Pretty Cool! HPG staff and students for continuing on in the face of adversity. Our Temple HS Tech Spot kids presented last week at TCEA and were asked after the presentation to present to Houston ISD in March! There were 10 students from every walk of life presenting. Wow. Five of the students also presented at Rotary yesterday and did a great job. PASS teachers at Western Hills for quickly de-escalating a student. Amazing. Temple High School Theatre Arts Department for Shrek! You have delighted us all, young and old. Temple HS Girls Varsity Basketball for being in the 3 rd round of play-offs! Scott Stewart for his selection as Athletic Director/Head Football Coach. Temple HS Boys Varsity Basketball Team for being 2 nd in District. Shout Outs Thornton, Scott, Kennedy-Powell for the highest district student attendance. Jackie Wright and Jessica Mays, Temple HS, for presenting across the State on our TechSpot program. Lynn Brock, Meridith-Dunbar, and Robert Whitehead, Technology Department, for helping with the Black History Month Celebration. Raye-Allen Elementary students raised $ for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. John Stumph Due to your generosity and active support, the United Way Campaign raised a total of: $17, Thank you all! These funds will directly benefit our community!

5 Walking with the Elephants A couple of weeks ago at the NAACP Founder s Day Celebration, Drayton McLane was talking about keys to success. One of the old fables that he used to make his point was called Walking with the Elephants. There was a flea and an elephant that crossed an old rickety bridge constructed out of twigs and twine connecting two mountains in Africa. As the pair crossed the bridge, it swayed and groaned and at many times felt it would fall. The pair successfully crossed and the flea looked up at the elephant and said, We shook it up a bit didn t we? The morale of the story, is that it is always best to walk with giants, they can take us far and that teamwork is not to be underestimated! Refrigerator Registrations We will not require refrigerator registration next year. We are not in a budget crisis at this point, although we highly encourage everyone to be mindful of our electrical usage, especially turning out lights when you leave a room. This makes a huge difference. MEETING WITH THE COMMISSIONER The ESC 12 superintendents had an opportunity to converse with new TEA commission, Mike Morath. He was surprisingly personable, approachable and inquisitive. He said he had 3 priorities, support educators in the field define expectations for Texas students and schools organize TEA to better serve districts He asked 3 questions. I pose these questions to you. If you want to send me a response, I will forward to TEA. I would love to hear from you. Is the STAAR test basically an IQ test? Is it useful to instruction? Is it useful for teachers? He said that his first order or business was reorganizing TEA to make it consumer friendly.
