2 CAMP JOURNEY Camp Journey is a federally-funded program designed to assist Kindergarten - 7th grade students in Title I schools improve their reading and math skills to attain proficiency. The theme this year is Arts of the Americas. Students will embark on a journey of the arts from South America to the Harlem Renaissance. Students demonstrating the greatest academic need will receive first priority for 1,800 seats available. Parents/Guardians will be able to enroll eligible students through registration materials produced for students. This program is organized by the Improvement and Innovation Department. Extended School Year services driven by IEPs for students with special education eligibilities will run concurrently within Camp Journey for grades 1-7. Parents will receive proper notification of these summer services. 3 EL SUMMER PROGRAM The Bilingual summer school program is federally-funded through Title III. It is designed for EL students in grades Seats are for students in the Newcomer/ESL Program and if any additional seats are available, students who have been referred by their teachers as needing further English language support will be notified. These seats will be assigned on a first registration returned - first serve basis. The focus of this course will be on the four domains of language development: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Instruction will be guided by the English Language Development Standards, as well as the Common Core State Standards. 4 ROOSEVELT STEP UP The Step-Up program is designed to build skills in preparation for the transition from 8th grade to 9th grade. Students are required to attend Step-Up by referral from their middle schools due to a need for additional instruction in math, reading and writing in an effort to ensure students are ready for high school. Students must be referred by their middle school administration. Attendance is mandatory. 5 HS CREDIT RECOVERY Credit Recovery is a tuition-based program designed to assist high school students in recovering credits from a previously failed course. Courses are taught by Illinois-certified teachers who are highly qualified in the subject area. Course offerings are limited to those required for graduation. Students may enroll in one or two courses during the summer program. Attendance is mandatory. Certified teachers (including special education) provide a range of instructional techniques; each differentiated and designed to focus on skills derived from the Common Core standards. Students are guided to work on individualized and/or group assignments to assist in meeting or exceeding benchmarks and recovering credits leading towards graduation. Assignments are supplied by alternative summer school or district-approved programs. Grade Level: 6th - 12th grade Times: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Location: Juvenile Detention Center Tuition: no cost
6 DRIVER EDUCATION RPS 205 Driver Education program provides excellent, affordable classroom instruction as well as Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) instruction to all students who enroll. Open to RPS 205 students as well as students who do not attend RPS 205. Grade Level: students must be at least 15 or turn 15 during the course, and students must have passed 8 classes during the past 2 semesters enrolled Times: 8 a.m. - 9:40 a.m. or 10 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. Location: Jefferson, Roosevelt District Transportation: NO Registration Dates/Times: Tuition: May 2 - June 1, 2017 at Roosevelt Community Education Center, 978 Haskell Ave. Tues/Thurs: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. (May 2 - May 18) Wed: 8:30 a.m a.m. (May 3-17) Late registration: Thursday, June 1: 8 a.m. - Noon/2 p.m. - 4 p.m. $250 / Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel $200 / Behind-the-Wheel only $50 / Classroom only **Note: This classroom instruction meets Law PA which requires all year olds to take/pass a driver education class before obtaining a driver s license. 7 HONORS ALGEBRA Summer Honors Algebra 1 is designed for students who demonstrate the ability to excel in math who have not yet taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade. This is an opportunity for those students to be on track to take Advanced Placement Math courses prior to graduation. The course meets for a total of 90 hours during the summer and follows the same curriculum students receive in a year-long class in high school. Upon successful completion, the student will receive two high school credits toward graduation and will then be registered for Honors Geometry in the fall of Freshmen year with the end goal of AP Calculus during senior year.
