2 Michigan Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2018 State Summer Games presented by SpartanNash! 2018 marks a very special year for Special Olympics. We are celebrating the 50th year of our program s existence. This is 50 years of building friendships 50 years of creating joy and 50 years of celebrating the most amazing athletes. Since 1968, Special Olympics has been creating opportunity and changing attitudes about people with intellectual disabilities. Everyone here at the 2018 State Summer Games should be proud of what we have accomplished together. Everyone from athletes who train hard to be here, volunteers who take time away from their jobs and families to work with our athletes, our staff and Games Committee who ensure the best possible experience for our athletes, you are all changing lives, attitudes and perceptions about people with intellectual disabilities. I couldn t be more proud of the work we do. August 2018 also marks my retirement from Special Olympics Michigan. Our program has grown over the years and I m so excited to see what the future holds for Special Olympics Michigan and although you may not see me in an official role at SOMI events, I will always be cheering you all on! As Eunice Kennedy Shriver would say Look how far we have come. She would also say now, get busy, we have so much more to do. Thank you for your support, dedication, passion and friendship over the years. Keep up the good work and remember to always... Choose to Include! Denim material of any color is not allowed as a uniform for any sporting event. All team uniforms are required to have a Special Olympics Michigan logo. Parent & Spectator Code of Conduct Special Olympics is committed to the highest ideals of sport and expects all parents and spectators to observe the following code: Remember athletes are participating for their enjoyment. Encourage participation, but do not force it. Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants on their performance, regardless of the game s outcome. Focus on the athletes effort and performance, rather than whether they win or lose. Encourage athletes to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence. Never ridicule or yell at people for making a mistake or losing the competition. Remember that athletes learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skillful plays by participants. Respect the decisions of officials and teach athletes to do the same. Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials, teachers and administrators. Condemn the use of violence in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players. Show respect for your team s opponents. Encourage athletes and coaches to follow the rules and the officials decision(s). Swearing and/or inappropriate language will not be tolerated at Special Olympics Michigan events. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person regardless 7 of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
10 Special Olympics Michigan reserves the right to dismiss parents and/or spectators from a Special Olympics Michigan event if the Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct is violated. Honest Effort Reminder All athletes must participate honestly and with maximum effort in all divisioning and/or competition. Equitable Competition Plan In the 50M, 100M, 200M track events and standing long jump the following procedure will be utilized: A list of all entry times for each athlete will be available in a notebook at the staging area, so coaches can check the entry times. Corrections are allowed to be made up to 30 minutes before the scheduled time of the event, and the athlete will be reheated to an appropriate heat. A score of 15% over the time submitted will be utilized to determine if the athlete violated the honest effort rule. Athletes who exceed the 15% will be placed in a holding area and the heat will be determined by what the athlete should have participated in, based on their actual time. Athletes will then be awarded according to the heat they are placed in. Athletes will not run the event again, as this will result in double awarding. Athletes will be escorted to the award stand at the appropriate time. Some athletic events will be Open Divisions including 800M, 1500M, 5000M, and all relay events. Open Division means male and female and all age groups compete together, but they will be awarded separately. 8
