2 Dear Coach, Please take the time to read this handbook, as it is designed to provide you with important information. It will answer many of your questions about Summer Games and will allow an organized and safe event for everyone involved. All schedules are subject to change. Any changes made due to weather conditions will be announced as soon as they are known. Changes made prior to an event will be announced at the head coach and Head Delegate meetings. 4 HEAD DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITIES Each Area has designated a person to serve as Head Delegate. The Head Delegate is the individual directly responsible for the coordination and management of the Area in matters that affect the entire Area, particularly as it relates to the appropriate conduct of coaches, transportation, housing, meals and entertainment. HEAD COACH RESPONSIBILITIES The Head Coach is directly responsible for the coordination and management of those athletes from a Local Training Program. He or she is primarily responsible for assuring that athletes are at the various competition sites and events, and properly equipped for that sport. Any problems relating to a given athlete during the sports competition will be addressed to the Head Coach. All head coaches are required to attend all coach meetings in their sport. COACH / CHAPERONE RESPONSIBILITIES All coaches and chaperones are responsible for the following specific services to each Special Olympics New Jersey athlete in their charge: Provide for the general welfare, health and safety Provide a reasonable standard of supervision, working in cooperation with other coaches in their Area Assurance that credentials are worn at all times Assistance in accounting for luggage and personal items at all times Assistance in reporting to competition areas at the proper time Assistance in taking full advantage of clinics and other events Assurance that prescribed medications are taken at proper times Assistance in maximizing the benefits achieved through participation Assistance in moving to and from the residence hall Assistance in being assembled at the proper time and place for special events 3

5 COACH / CHAPERONE RESPONSIBILITIES All coaches and chaperones must also accept and carry out these responsibilities: Provide for the general welfare, health and safety of any athletes in their charge Dress and act in a manner which will be appropriate to their assigned responsibilities at all times Report any emergencies to the appropriate authorities after first taking immediate action to ensure the health and safety of all athletes in their charge Refrain from the consumption of alcoholic beverages and non prescribed, controlled substances during the course of their assigned duties Not engage in any type of inappropriate behavior, contact, relationship, sexual activity, or physical abuse with either Special Olympics athletes or other volunteers Be familiar with all information from scheduled coaches meetings Be thoroughly familiar with all information in this handbook SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COACH All athletes must have proper clothing for competition: (refer to Sports -- pages 12-18). In the judgment of the official, if the athlete is improperly outfitted, the athlete may not be allowed to compete. Jeans, slacks, sports shirts, sweaters or shoes are not proper competition clothing. Medals, hats and jewelry shall not be worn in competition. Water stations will be set up throughout the campus. Please make sure your athletes drink plenty of fluids. Programs must pre-register for Local Training Program (LTP) escorts if they wish to use this service. LTP escorts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can pick up LTP escorts between 7:30-9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Look for Local Training Program Escorts signs at the volunteer check-in tent located in the student center. (Refer to page 7 of this handbook.) 4

6 SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COACH Coaches should carry the following with them at all times: All athlete medical forms Athlete emergency contact information Athlete medications Schedule of Games & directions to venues Sports rule books Small first-aid kit Sunscreen A cooler or water bottles for each athlete Additional shorts & t-shirts for emergencies All participants will be presented with identification credentials for the Games. Credentials must be worn at all times, however they must be removed and secured during competition. CREDENTIALS Shown below is an example of the 2016 Summer Games Credential. Credentials for coaches, chaperones, and head delegates will be similar to the athlete credential, but will not list the area, LTP, and sport/event information. Please note that credentials will be needed for entrance to all meals in dining halls and access to residence hall rooms. Residence hall security will be enforcing this policy therefore, parents and guardians will not be allowed in residence hall rooms. A blue dot on the credential will signify day participants. 7 REGISTRATION Registration for Local Training Programs will take place Friday, June 10. Each program coordinator should confirm their registration pick-up time and exact location with your Head Delegate prior to their arrival at the Games. Each registration packet will contain the following items: Athlete credentials Games souvenir pins for athletes, coaches and chaperones Updated competition schedules if any changes are made Coach t-shirts for the entire area Coaches and chaperones must show photo ID before receiving their credentials and registration packets. Head Delegates are expected to check coach and chaperone IDs. It is the responsibility of the individual day athletes to coordinate with their Local Training Program coordinator or coach when they are arriving on Friday to receive their individual credentials. Check your registration packet! If you find anything missing, please inform your Head Delegate immediately. HOUSING All Areas have been pre-assigned to residence halls at TCNJ and Rider University. Please contact your Head Delegate before you arrive at Summer Games for your campus and residence hall assignment (Areas may be housed in more than one residence hall). Coaches must go directly to their assigned campus and residence hall on Friday to meet their Head Delegate and to pick up registration materials and room keys. TCNJ residents, please the Route 31 entrance onto campus & follow signs to your assigned residence hall. Rider residents, please the US 206 entrance onto campus & follow signs to your assigned residence hall. 6

8 HOUSING 5-minute parking is allowed for loading and unloading athletes and luggage near entrances to all residence halls. After 5 minutes, you must move your vehicle and park in TCNJ / Rider parking garages or lots behind residence halls. Any vehicle that violates the 5-minute parking limit will risk being ticketed and/or towed. SONJ is no responsible for any fines or fees associated with campus traffic violations. Furniture in each room (including the mattress) may not be moved. This is a violation of the college fire safety code. Items that are found missing from any room will be billed directly to the coach or chaperone responsible for the individuals in that room. An 11:00 p.m., a Quiet Hour Policy will be enforced by college security in all residence halls on both campuses. Please be considerate to your fellow coaches and athletes around you. At the completion of the Games, all keys must be returned to your Head Delegate. For details on this process, contact your Head Delegate and familiarize yourself with your Area s procedure regarding the collection of keys. It is your responsibility to make sure that all of your keys are returned before leaving campus. Any keys that are lost or not returned will cost the coach or chaperone $50.00 each. Each athlete s name and LTP should be permanently and clearly marked on each personal item. 9 MEDICAL The medical staff at the Summer Games will provide 24 hour coverage for all athletes and coaches in attendance. You, as a coach, serve as the liaison between medical staff and your athletes. Special Olympics New Jersey encourages you to handle any minor situation that you can. Please remember the following tips throughout the Games: Prevention is the best cure. Make sure your athletes are dressed appropriately. Encourage your athletes to hydrate prior to their events and continue drinking fluids throughout the competition. Avoid fluids that contain caffeine. High volume of fluids immediately following an activity may lead to stomach cramping. Sunscreen is recommended for all athletes during outdoor activities. Repeat the application of sunscreen throughout the day. Stretching prior to and immediately following activities will help to prevent injuries. A medical station will be located in The Spiritual Lounge for programs that need medications distributed. Athletic trainers will be available to assist with the treatment of sports injuries and provide taping, etc., for athletes. A medical station will be located at the track and will be staffed by medical personnel during competition hours. All venues will have a medical staff member on-site during competition at each venue. If a serious medical situation arises, please follow these procedures: During daytime hours, medical personnel are available at all competition venues during competition hours. If you are unable to immediately locate the medical volunteer, go to the public address system located at the venue. Each venue will have radio communication to call for medical assistance. All coaches are expected to carry a copy of each of their athletes medical forms with them at all times. During evening hours, there will be medical staff on site at all evening activities. Between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. please contact medical personnel located in the closest residence hall. Residence hall and room numbers of medical personnel are provided in your registration packet. 8

They will not receive credentials, therefore they will not be allowed to enter the residence halls or attend the opening ceremonies with their delegation. LTP escorts must be at least 16 years old and pre-register with Special Olympics New Jersey for a position. He or she must report to volunteer check-in first thing each morning for the duration of Summer Games, prior to attending any competition. Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games Committee members will present a general orientation to all LTP escorts prior to assigning volunteers to coaches. It is the responsibility of each coach to orient the escorts to specific athletes. Coaches should kindly express their expectations of each escort (i.e., athletes should get to events on time, take necessary steps to ensure safety, abide by athletes dietary requirements). Also, coaches should provide written information describing their athlete s checkin times, events, cell phone numbers, (in the event the escort needs to contact the coach), and any other pertinent athlete information. Special Olympics New Jersey recommends that all LTP escorts work directly with the coach and should not, at any time, assume independent supervisory responsibilities outside of the competition or special events areas. Coaches may wish to consult with their athletes about requesting the same escort for a second day or requesting another person. For information in reference to LTP escorts during the Games, please visit the volunteer check-in area inside Lions Stadium. 9

11 LOCAL TRAINING PROGRAM (LTP) ESCORTS If you requested an LTP escort, please meet your escort outside at the LTP match-up area at the volunteer check-in area inside Lions Stadium between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. each morning. Escorts will be assigned to you at that time. Please note that after 9:00 a.m., the assignment table will close. If you did not submit a request for an LTP escort, you may request an unassigned escort on a first come, first served basis. Those coaches must go to the LTP escort assignment table at volunteer check-in inside Lions Stadium each morning between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Instructions will be given at that time in regards to meeting with assigned volunteers. MEALS SONJ will provide dinner on Friday, June 10, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, June 11 and breakfast and lunch on Sunday, June 12. 12 MEALS Friday, June 10 TCNJ dinner will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eickhoff Dining Hall will serve penne marinara*, meatballs, tossed salad, garlic bread, cookies and soda or water. Rider dinner will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Daly Dining Hall will serve fried chicken, sausage and peppers, potatoes, corn and coleslaw. Saturday, June 11 TCNJ breakfast will be held from 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Eickhoff Dining Hall will serve scrambled eggs, french toast*, sausage links, juice, milk, hot coffee or tea, whole fruit, cereal, danish and breakfast potatoes. Rider breakfast will be held from 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Daly Dining Hall will serve eggs, french toast, hash browns and sausage patties. All programs will eat lunch at the ShopRite tent located in lot 12 on the TCNJ campus from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meals will be available at Mercer County Park for softball and tennis participants. TCNJ dinner will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eickhoff Dining Hall will serve chicken with bruschetta*, vegetable stir fry*, roasted potatoes*, steamed broccoli* and cauliflower*, tossed salad*, cookies and brownies and soda or water. Rider dinner will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Daly Dining Hall will serve roasted turkey, potatoes, penne and tomato sauce, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green peas. Sunday, June 12 TCNJ breakfast will be held from 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Eickhoff Dining Hall will serve scrambled eggs, french toast*, sausage links, juice, milk, hot coffee or tea, whole fruit, cereal, danish and breakfast potatoes. Rider breakfast will be held from 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Daly Dining Hall will serve eggs, pancakes, home fries and turkey sausage. All programs will eat lunch at the ShopRite tent located in lot 12 on the TCNJ campus from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meals will be available at Mercer County Park for softball and tennis participants. 11 * Indicates a gluten free option.

13 RAIN PLAN In the event of rain, all indoor events will continue as scheduled. Outdoor competitions will continue unless officials determine competition is unsafe. At that point, competition will be delayed and an announcement will be made at all competition venues and Olympic Village as to the status of the rain delay. In the event of a rain delay, when declared by officials at that venue, athletes and coaches should proceed to indoor competition venues or the Healthy Athletes location (AIMM Building). Official rain delay updates will be posted in the lobby of dining halls as well as in each residence hall. When rain subsides, it will be announced as to what time competition will resume and the schedule that will be followed for each sport. The committee will make every effort to conduct all events at the Summer Games. The Games Officials, though, have the authority to suspend or even cancel some events for the health and safety of participants. The possibility does exist that, in the event of rain, competition may be rescheduled for Saturday or Sunday evening. Listen for announcements and look for updates. Once athletes are staged, they will be escorted to the pool. No teams will be allowed on the pool deck. Females will stage first and males will stage after females. All spectators must proceed to the pool balcony to view the competition. AWARDS All awards will be presented after each race. Awards will be given in the North Gym of Packer Hall. If you have a swimmer in a back-to-back race, he/she must report to the staging area before receiving their award. Escorts will assist athletes to staging area. Coaches must pick-up athletes at the conclusion of awards. UNIFORMS All athletes must wear swimsuits for competition. Bathing caps are recommended. 20

Competition will be conducted in traditional doubles, Unified doubles and Unified 4 person team competition. All participants must be present and registered in order to compete. UNIFORMS Golf shirts, shorts, slacks (no jeans), sneakers, and athletic socks. GENERAL RULES Bocce competition will be conducted according to the Special Olympics Sports Rules/Officials Rules. 21

SATURDAY, JUNE 11 8:00 a.m. Women s Artistic Gymnasts Report / Open Stretch 11:40 p.m. Awards 12:15 p.m. Men s Artistic Gymnasts Report / Open Stretch 3:00 p.m. Awards VENUE PROCEDURES All practices must be supervised by a qualified coach or volunteer. This means that each athlete must be properly spotted on each piece of equipment when practicing routines. Women s coaches should bring the music that the athletes have been using in practice. The music must be presented to the music coordinator just prior to the athlete s competition in the event. Spectators will not be allowed in the competition area. Athletes must participate in the scheduled warm-up/practice prior to competition. No athlete will be allowed on the floor without a registered coach. AWARDS The awards ceremony will take place at the conclusion of each level of competition. All athletes receiving awards will be paraded together for the ceremony. UNIFORMS Male athletes should wear shorts, t-shirt, tank top or men s tank step-in, white socks or bare feet. White gymnastics stretch pants are optional. Female athletes should wear a leotard, bare legs, bare feet. Beam shoes are optional. See rule book for exceptions. 22

24 GYMNASTICS SCHAFER SCHOOL OF GYMNASTICS GENERAL RULES The gymnastics competition will be conducted under the United States Gymnastics Federation Rules and the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules Revised 2014 USA Artistic Gymnastics and Revised 2010 USA Rhythmic Gymnastics. POWERLIFTING KENDALL HALL SATURDAY, JUNE 11 9:00 a.m. Weigh-in 9:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Bench Press Competition Squat Competition Deadlift Competition COACHES NOTES Athletes must weigh-in on Saturday, June 11, at the competition venue (Kendall Hall). Competition will be conducted on Saturday on the main stage of the theatre at Kendall Hall. A warm-up area behind the stage will be fully equipped for warm-ups prior to competition. UNIFORMS T-shirt and shorts or wrestling suit (one piece) or lifting suit (one piece or lifting shirt for bench press only), sneakers or wrestling shoes, supportive undergarments or athletic supporter. A powerlifting belt is required (7-13 mm thick, 10 cm wide and of heavy duty material). GENERAL RULES Powerlifting competition at the Summer Games will be conducted under the Official Special Olympics Powerlifting Rules -- Revised 2014, in conjunction with the rules of the United States Powerlifting Federation. 23

Merge onto I-95 N toward New York / Camden. Stay stright to go onto I-295 S. Take the Sloan Avenue exit, exit 65B-A. Keep left at the fork in the ramp. Take the Sloan Avenue E exit, exit 65A. Merge onto County Hwy Turn left onto Edinburg Road / County Hwy-535. Continue to follow County Hwy Old Trenton Road will be on your left. Team competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. Games shall consist of seven innings or a one hour and fifteen minute time limit from the scheduled start time of the game. Alterations to the tournament schedule will be left to the Tournament Director in case of tied games superseding the one hour and fifteen minute time allotment. The game will be considered complete if, after five full innings of play, one team leads the other by ten or more runs. A Round Robin Competition will be conducted for all divisions. All teams will play at least two games. If a team does not report at the scheduled start time of a game, the team risks a forfeit of the contest. It is the coach s responsibility to know when his or her team is scheduled to play. Coaches should submit line-up cards to the scorer s table fifteen (15) minutes before scheduled game time. Awards will be presented at the softball venue following competition. At the conclusion of games, determining place finishes, an awards ceremony will be conducted on the field immediately following the conclusion of the contest. No more than four registered coaches and uniformed players are allowed in the bench area. 24

26 SOFTBALL MERCER COUNTY PARK COMPETITION VENUE There will be seven fields at Mercer County Park on Saturday and Sunday competition. All seven will have dirt infields. Game balls are provided; warm-up balls and other equipment is the responsibility of each team. Water will be provided. An athlete experience and lunch from ShopRite will be provided to participants next to the ice rink. Spectators must be seated in bleachers on either side of home plate, outside the field. LAYOUT OF MERCER COUNTY PARK FIELDS GENERAL RULES The softball competition will be conducted according to ASA Slow Pitch Rules and the official Special Olympics sports rules - revised All individuals on a team must compete in identical softball team uniforms as specified under ASA Rules. (No advertising is allowed on the uniforms or on the hats.) For Unified and traditional competition, baseline distance will be 65 feet. For Unified competition, pitching distance will be 50 feet. 28 TRACK AND FIELD TCNJ TRACK There will be a mandatory coach meeting held on Friday, June 10 at 5:00 p.m. in the track staging area adjacent to the parking deck. VENUE PROCEDURES All athletes must check in at the track staging (for running, walking or wheelchair events) tent located outside of the track. All athletes should arrive thirty (30) minutes prior to scheduled start of his or her event. Once your athlete has been checked in, all coaches must proceed into the stands to view competition. Athletes will be escorted in complete divisions to the start line of each race. At the completion of each race, athletes will be escorted to the awards area on the opposite side of the track. A seating and photo area will be designated for spectator, coaches and families to view awards presentations. At the completion of awards presentations, athletes should be picked up immediately from the athlete pick-up area located at the track & field awards area. UNIFORMS All athletes must be outfitted in athletic attire. Shorts, preferably nylon, tank top or t-shirt and sneakers are required. Running shoes are recommended. No jewelry, medals or hats shall be worn during competition. Relay teams must be in like uniforms. If athletes are NOT properly uniformed they will be subject to disqualification. RUNNING & STANDING LONG JUMP All athletes must check in at the field staging tent located inside the track. Each athlete will take three (3) jumps in rotation. Athletes will be jumping into sand pits. Upon completion of the event, athletes will be escorted to the field awards area located on Ackerman Baseball Field (see map). Athletes and coaches should report behind the Recreation Center on C Street by 7:00 p.m. Uniforms must be worn by all members in the Parade of Athletes. 2. At 7:00 p.m., athletes and coaches will be called to line up at their Area sign. As the parade will enter the stadium, pay particular attention to Area signs and marshals for direction. Reminder: No Area or school banners may be carried in the parade. It is also recommended that no purses or duffle bags be carried by coaches or athletes. 3. Athletes should line up six abreast with coaches on either end. Athletes in wheelchairs should move to the front of the Area Delegation. 4. Parade marshals will instruct each Area to begin moving. Please follow instructions. 5. NO SMOKING allowed in Lions Stadium. NO FOOD OR BEVERAGE allowed in Lions Stadium. 6. Athletes and coaches will remain on the turf following the Opening Ceremony for the special entertainment. Family members will NOT be allowed on the turf. MOVIE NIGHT Movie night will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. TCNJ residents can see Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day in the Travers-Wolfe Main Lounge or Decker Social Space. Rider residents can watch Star Wars outdoors on the campus green behind the Bart Luedeke Center. MASS Mass will take place at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 12 at the Spiritual Center on TCNJ campus. 31

33 FUTURE STARS RACE The Future Stars Race will take place both Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 at 12:30 p.m. with the Strider Bike Race to follow immediately after on both days. The Future Stars Races and Strider Bike Races will take place on the TCNJ track. OLYMPIC VILLAGE Summer Games will feature an event dedicated to making the most of every athlete s time outside the field of competition. Olympic Village provides entertainment and educational activities for athletes of all ages attening Summer Games. Olymics Village will take place on Loser Lawn on Saturday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It is each coach s responsibility to supervise your athletes consumption of food and beverage in Olympic Village. Please be cognizant of your athletes diet and allergy restrictions. YOUNG ATHLETE PROGRAM The Young Athlete Program will take place on the TCNJ softball field from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12. SHOWCASE BASEBALL GAME The showcase baseball game will take place on Ackerman Field on the TCNJ campus at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. While we celebrate the achievements of our athletes in sport, we recognize that good health is the foundation for every athlete. In addition, healthcare professionals are trained in providing quality care to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Healthy Athletes offers screenings in the seven different health disciplines: BASELINE CONCUSSION ASSESSMENTS are provided to Special Olympics athletes in a fun, game-like format that is taken on the ipad. FIT FEET provides free podiatric screenings to evaluate the feet, ankles, and lower extremity biomechanics while also ensuring that the athlete is wearing proper shoes and socks. HEALTHY HEARING offers audiological screenings designed to assess the prevalence of possible hearing loss among Special Olympics athletes and if treatment is required. FUNfitness is designed to assess and improve flexibility, functional strength and balance, as well as educating athletes, families and coaches about the importance of staying physically fit. HEALTH PROMOTION measures height, weight, Body Mass Index, and blood pressure while empowering and motivating athletes to make healthy lifestyle choices that will improve their long-term health. OPENING EYES provides vision and eye health screenings. Athletes who participate in an Opening Eyes screening may be fitted for new eyeglasses or sports goggles at no cost to the athlete. SPECIAL SMILES is a non-intrusive dental screening. It provides athletes with dental hygiene education to help ensure that they are doing an adequate job of brushing and flossing, as well as nutritional education to understand how their diet affects their total health. 33
