4 Race Entry Procedure Coaches must submit their entries online by 5:00 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, May 8. Entries for the championships may only be submitted online, through DirectAthletics.com. Upon completion of the championship entries, all coaches must generate an confirmation of their entries. No additions or event changes may be made after this deadline. All distances below 1,500 meters must be FAT to qualify for the outdoor championships. Each team is limited to 4 entries per event and 1 per relay. All scratches will take place prior to the heats being drawn and distributed at the coaches meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 9. Coaches Technical Meeting The coaches technical meeting will be held on Monday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Williams Stadium Club Pavilion (3rd floor). Stairs and elevators to the 3rd floor are found off of the main concourse of Williams Stadium, adjacent to the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. This is a mandatory meeting, and at least one representative from each institution s coaching staff is required to attend. Each team s credentials will be distributed at this time, for fulltime coaches and athletic trainers, as well as any school administrators planning to attend the meet. Dinner will be provided for all in attendance, starting at 6:30 p.m. Practice Times and Location The Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex, along with the hammer throw venue on Campus East, will be available for practice between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9. The track will also be open for practice each morning from 9:00 a.m. until 30 minutes prior to the day s first track event. At that point, all non-competing athletes must leave the track area. The team tent/warm-up area, located on the turf football practice field just north of the track, will be available throughout the championship and will have its own set of hurdles to utilize. The infield of the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex is strictly off limits as a warm-up area. Only competing participants escorted by the clerk and credentialed personnel will be permitted on the infield. Parking The small parking lot by the Luurtsema Center will be reserved for VIPs and meet officials ONLY, and parking passes will required for entry into the lot. The primary parking area for team buses/vans, officials and spectators will be located behind the Liberty University bookstore in the Upper Speakman lot. Spectators may also be able to find parking in the Bailey Lot off of Williams Stadium Road. Please note that the Bailey Lot is adjacent to Liberty Baseball Stadium, which will be hosting a game Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Team Tent/Warmup Area Team tents may be set up in designated locations on the turf football practice field just north of the track. Hurdles will also be provided for warm-ups on the practice field. Team buses and vans will be permitted to stop temporarily on Evans Boulevard to drop off athletes and equipment at the team tent/warmup area. Teams wishing to rent tents for the meet are encouraged to call FDS Tent Rental at If you bring your own tent, please use water barrels or sand bags. NO STAKES ON TURF! Competition Venues All events will take place inside the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex EXCEPT the men s and women s hammer throw. Those events will take place on Campus East. Shuttle service will be provided between the Luurtsema Center parking lot and the hammer throw venue on Tuesday (1:30-5:30 p.m.) and Wednesday (2:00-6:00 p.m.). Clint Lowe will be heading up the shuttle service, and his cell phone number is
5 Implement Weigh-in All multi-event field implements must be weighed in prior to the start of Tuesday s competition. Implement checkin will close 60 minutes before the event start. Implements will be impounded after weigh-in and released back to the athlete at the implement weigh-in area at the conclusion of the competition. The implement weigh-in area is located inside the men s soccer locker room (near the common start/finish line). Any implement may be weighed in at any other event s specified time, but no later than the time designated for that particular implement s event. Weigh-in hours: Tuesday: 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Women s Discus implements must be weighed in by 11:30 a.m. Decathlon implements (for both days of competition) must be weighed in by 1:00 p.m. Heptathlon implements (for both days of competition) must be weighed in by 1:45 p.m. Men s Hammer implements must be weighed in by 2:30 p.m. Women s Javelin implements must be weighed in by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Men s Discus 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Women s Hammer Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Men s Shot Put Noon - 1:00 p.m. - Men s Javelin and Women s Shot Put Check-in Procedure All athletes must check in to the meet clerk no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of a running event. The clerk tent will be located on the pavement between the team warmup area and the track, near the common start/ finish line. Athletes competing in a field event may check in with the designated event officials anytime prior to the start of the event. Spikes Only 1/4 pyramid spikes are allowed at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. The exceptions are inset shoes for the high jump and javelin, which may use up to 3/8 spikes. Seeding For all lane events (including 800 meters), all events shall be seeded using Rule of the NCAA rule book. The fast heat in any not-trial final must have a minimum of six competitors. The fastest seeded heat will be the last heat run, where applicable. Empty lanes in a final will not be filled. Competitors with no actual mark or time in an event must be entered in that event with no mark/time. Please refer to the Big South Conference policy manual for information pertaining to heats, flights, qualifying procedures and staggers. Lane Preferences for 100, 100 hurdles & 110 hurdles: Lane Preferences for 200, 400, 800, 400 hurdles, 4 x 100 and 4 x 400:
6 Protest The track & field liaison from the Big South Conference, Matt VanSandt, will establish a protest form for the championship. Protest forms should be available to all head coaches. All protests must be made in writing to the clerk of the course. All protests will be acted upon in accordance with NCAA track & field rules. Jury of Appeals All appeals on a decision will be made to the Jury of Appeals. The Jury of Appeals will consist of the Conference liaison and the two referees not involved in intial protest, with all three allowed to vote. Scoring and Championship Awards First Place 10 points Second Place 8 points Third Place 6 points Fourth Place 5 points Fifth Place 4 points Sixth Place 3 points Seventh Place 2 points Eighth Place 1 point The top 3 finishers in each event shall be named all-conference and shall receive medals. The medals for each event will be awarded while the meet is in progress, on the infield of the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex in front of the primary seating area. The overall team awards shall be presented immediately following the conclusion of the meet. All head coaches will vote for the men s and women s outstanding track performer and outstanding field performer, freshman of the year and coach of the year. Restroom Facilities Restroom facilities are available behind the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex seating area, off of the Williams Stadium concourse. There will also be portable facilities located at the hammer throw venue on Campus East. Locker Rooms There will be no locker room facilities available during the championships. Hospitality Area A hospitality area for coaches, meet officials and university administrators will be available during the meet. It will be located in the Williams Stadium Club Pavilion (3rd floor). Credentials will be required to access the stairs and elevators at the south end of Williams Stadium, leading to the 3rd floor. Credentials will be available for pickup at the coaches technical meeting Monday evening. The hospitality area will have food available during the following times: Tuesday, May 10 from 11:00-1:00 (lunch) and 4:30-6:30 (dinner) Wednesday, May 11 from 11:00-1:00 (lunch) and 4:30-6:30 (dinner) Thursday, May 12 from 11:00-1:00 (lunch) During hours that food is not being served in the hospitality area, drinks and snacks will still be available in the same location. Tickets Admission is free for all spectators for the entire 2016 Big South Conference Men s and Women s Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 6
7 Programs Meet programs will be free for all spectators throughout the 2016 Big South Conference Men s and Women s Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The programs will feature a schedule of events, rosters, records and more. Athletic Training The Liberty University athletic training staff will be available to assist you and your team during the Big South Championships. The following services will be provided for you during your visit: Water Cold tubs Ice Bags and injury ice Therapeutic Modalities (Used only by ATCs) Hot packs Emergency Supplies (splints, crutches, etc.) EMS personnel will also be on site for the competition. The Athletic Training area is located on the football concourse near the north tower elevators. The athletic training room will be available one hour prior to the first event and will remain open until the end of each day s competition. Please notify the LU athletic training staff as early as possible if an athletic trainer will not be traveling with your team or if special accommodations are needed (megreen1@liberty.edu). Medical Care Facilities: LU Athletic Training Room (434) LU Health Services (434) Lynchburg General Hospital (434) Lightning Policy: In the event of lightning, the Liberty University Lightning Policy will be implemented. (The policy may be found at the Sports Medicine link on The Thomas Indoor Soccer Center will be used as a shelter area for athletes, coaches and officials, if necessary. 7
8 Results Event results will be posted on a board on the main concourse of Williams Stadium, behind the seating area at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. Results will also be updated live at and www. flashresults.com throughout the championship. At the conclusion of each day s events, results will be posted on and ed to each school s sports information contact. Printed results will also be available to each team s head coach upon request. Video Streaming The entire 2016 Big South Conference Men s and Women s Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be video streamed through the Big South Network. Go one mile to the Liberty University/Candler s Mountain Road/Route 670 exit, which will be on your right. Go straight through the stop sign and make your first right onto Liberty University Drive, crossing the bridge onto the main Liberty University campus. Once across the bridge, turn left onto University Boulevard and continue through the traffic circle, taking the second exit. Make the first left past the traffic circle (in the middle of the large parking lot behind it) and park in the half of the lot (Speakman) closest to the bookstore. The Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex is located across the street from the Speakman lot, at the corner of University Boulevard and Williams Stadium Road. FROM 29 SOUTH (from Charlottesville, Va.) Take 29 South to Lynchburg. Merge onto 29 South/460 West just outside of Lynchburg. Take the second Candler s Mountain Road exit, entitled Candler s Mountain Road/University Blvd. Turn left at light onto University Blvd. and continue straight to enter the main Liberty University campus.
