HEY GLACURH! I am so very excited and prideful to present to all of you Oakland University s bid to host the GLACURH Regional Leadership Conference 2018! If you ll recall, back in January there was an sent to the region from Regional Director Cassie Govert. The letter in essence was a rally to encourage members of the Great Lakes to dip their toes in life of conference hosting. For many, hosting a Regional Leadership Conference seems almost farfetched due to the many constraints perceived about their respective campus. When I arrived at Oakland University in August to begin my graduate career, that is exactly where we were at. With the university having never hosted a conference, it was almost as if they could see the islands up ahead but had never known how to get to them. Once I received that in January, I immediately got to work on mapping logistics in order to gain institutional support. After countless days of compiling room capacities, local hotel rooms, catering information, and forming a well rounded list of student leaders, I was able to gain the support of two conference advisors and the Director of University Housing. As an institution we have made strides over the past couple of years to get further involved in the region, and we hope to continue that trend in having the opportunity to offer our warm hospitality to those that are part of our polar bear celebration. After 50 amazing years full of amazing leaders, we at Oakland know that GLACURH, MOWII, and HOMES are ready for a cruise; we hope you re ready too! As leaders in residence life settings, we are constantly faced with new challenges and ideas. As many know, travelling can be one of the most enriching experiences that will help an individual challenge themself and the preconceived notions of the world around them. The theme for the GLACURH RLC 2018 at Oakland University is one that focuses on self discovery where you can immerse yourself in topics of inclusion, diversity, understanding, outreach, and self. Much like our conference, those that have been on a cruise will tell you that once they have docked and returned home the memories and experiences at sea and in other cultures has resonated with them. It is my sincerest hope that you enjoy the bid we have presented here today, and will truly consider all that we have to offer. Oakland University is well prepared to host GLACURH Regional Leadership Conference 2018, and if selected will ensure that every delegates is prepared to Set Sail into LeaderShip! Peace. Love. Polar Bears. Daniel S. Hill Conference Chair 02

About OAKLAND UNIVERSITY Oakland University s unique history started in 1957, when Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband Alfred Wilson, donated the entire Meadow Brook Farm estate to Michigan State University to form its satellite Oakland County campus. The farm land had its roots from Matilda s first marriage to John Dodge, while the prominent home Meadow Brook Hall, was built by Matilda and Alfred Wilson. Meadow Brook Hall stands currently as a museum on campus and is listed as a Historic Landmark with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. In 1963, the university changed its name to Oakland University and officially became an independent university in Oakland University has amassed more than fifty major buildings on campus which includes academic and administrative, residential, athletic, and some unique venues like Meadow Brook Theatre and Amphitheater. OU currently offers residents the ability to live in seven different complexes including freshmen, upperclassmen, and co-mingled facilities. While OU can currently house 2,700 students, it will expand to approximately 3,400 starting Fall 2018 when Hillcrest Hall makes its debut. Over 2,700 of OU s 19,333 students opt to live on campus to its community feel and proximity to all campus happenings. Oakland University s 1,443 acre campus is located at the intersection of Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills, Michigan, and is officially native to Rochester, Michigan. The campus is accessible via Exit 79 - University Drive of I-75, which has nearby connections to I-94, I-96, and M-59. Nestled 30 miles Northwest of Detroit s center, the area boasts a large variety of local businesses, chain establishments, and corporate headquarters (including Chrysler Headquarters!) While Oakland University has not hosted a NACURH or GLACURH conference, it is no stranger to special events. Meadow Brook Hall and OU have served as the site for the filming of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, a Miley Cyrus music video, a runway fashion show, countless music festivals and concerts, and the wedding of the rapper Eminem. 04

About OU'S RHA & NRHH The Oakland University Residence Hall Association is the governing body for the residential communities on campus, constructed similarly to other schools within the Great Lakes Region. The Executive Board consists of 9 positions, is advised by a Residence Director and Programming Graduate Assistant, and works with the five different residential councils on campus. In recent years, Oakland s RHA has strived to fine tune it knack for programming and providing outlets for students on campus. During the course of the year, RHA has already hosted a large mass of programs around issues of stress, inclusion, mental health, and more. At the 2017 Regional Leadership Conference, RHA bid and won the Commitment to Diversity Award for Oakland University. The Golden Grizzly Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary consistently has shown growth and improvement since its beginning at OU in Fall Over the past year, the Chapter has sought to get back to its roots in restructuring its programming predominately around the values of recognition and service. Through the events Blessing in a Backpack, Penny Wars 2017, Paws for the Cause, and Kindness Carnations the Chapter has been able to provide service and donations to local school children, humane societies, and Haven, a nonprofit committed to work with sexual assault and domestic violence victims and prevention. At the 2017 Regional Leadership Conference, NRHH bid for Student Staff Member of the Year, NRHH Outstanding Member of the Year, and NRHH Outstanding Chapter of the Year; ultimately, Oakland won two of the three bids submitted. Additionally, NRHH has submitted bids for the OCM First Year Experience Award and NRHH Outstanding President of the Year at the 2018 Regional Business Conference. Oakland University hosted Tim Nickels and Allen Dahlka to serve on the Regional Board of Directors. Tim served as the Associate Director for NRHH during the academic term, and Allen serves as the Associate Director for Administration and Finance for the term. Additionally OU has hosted members on the NACURH and GLACURH OTM Selection Committees. 05

THEME OVERVIEW It is no surprise that we as student leaders face difficult course loads, organizational stress, and the general pitfalls of adulting. That s why we have chosen to invite the GLACURH region to a fun-filled, yet educational, weekend aboard the S.S. Oakland. Our theme of Set Sail into LeaderShip encourages cruisers from across the region to partake in this all-inclusive experience. This two-night adventure invites cruisers to embark on the journey of self-discovery, skill development, and the building of lifelong friendships. Throughout the weekend, cruisers will have the opportunity to attend some amazing Enrichment adventures where they will experience everything from diversity and inclusion to community building. The theme will incorporate various forms of entertainment and spirit to encourage the notion that student leaders can both advance their skills and networks, while practicing meaningful selfcare. By intertwining the theme to the conference aspects we hope to create an immersive experience where student leaders will connect as if they are on vacation, while still gaining important skills and programs to take back to their home campuses. Having the chance to host hundreds of inspired and motivated individuals on one campus is an experience Oakland University does not want to miss out on. We are truly excited at the prospect of serving as the Gold Line Crew while students fine tune their leadership skills and discover their inner adventurer. 06

PHILANTHROPY For the Regional Leadership Conference 2018, we will be working with the Regional Philanthropy, Ronald McDonald House Charities. We believe it is crucial to continue to encourage schools to give to an organization which we all agreed to work with in Pre-Conference Collecting At conference check-in we will be accepting donations for RMHC in both the forms of pop tab and monetary. We believe this will allow schools which cannot necessarily collect and donate money, to participate in this important aspect of the conference. The school which raises the most will win an award, and all participation will go towards spirit point totals. Philanthropy at the Conference During the lunch rotation, a philanthropy project related to RMHC will occur. Currently we are exploring the idea of doing a stuffed animal building program which will result in hundreds of toys to be donated to the Southeastern Michigan Chapter in Detroit. 31

VOLUNTEERS The staff captain will begin the process of gathering volunteers beginning September 2018 to engage students in an opportunity to experience a conference such as this. We will be reaching out to several on-campus organization including, but not limited to, Oakland University s Residence Halls Association and Hall Councils, NRHH, and residential life staff, and those involved in the leadership and service program to devote their time to help during GLACURH as needed. We are seeking a volunteer crew of people that will be working in shifts. The volunteers training will be done through a process that will have them next to perfection in time for their big performance -- GLACURH RLC 2018! 32

LETTERS OF SUPPORT & ACKNOWLEDGEMENT 33

February 23, 2018 To all of those in GLACURH: I am writing you to express my support for Oakland University s bid to host the 2018 GLACURH Conference. While I have only been involved personally with Resident Halls Associations for a year, I have been attending Oakland University and involved in housing for 3 years. During the past 3 years, Oakland has received multiple awards for conferences we have attended. With that being said, Oakland s recognition is growing and we would like to use this momentum as an opportunity to show GLACURH who we are. Being the President of Residence Halls Association, I know how dedicated and hard working the staff is. Within our board of 10 members, many of them are working on this conference and preparing the campus. Oakland University Housing is opening a new residence hall in the fall names Hillcrest. There is no better way to welcome the new residents to campus than a warm GLACURH hello. I believe that hosting GLACURCH will not only bring insight to our existing residents but is an opportunity to get our new residents involved with housing. Which will result in more involvement with GLAURCH. Not only does Oakland have a new housing building opening up, but our main campus hangout the Oakland Center is being remodeled and will be open in fall as well. Oakland University is located in Rochester, MI just an hour away from Detroit. Although you do not need to visit the city to get a taste of culture, Rochester s main street just a few miles away. Every winter they illuminate the street with thousands of lights hanging from the buildings and it attracts people from all over. Oakland University is surrounded by many restaurants and businesses, so there is never a dull moment and these grizzlies do not hibernate. This conference will allow not only our residents but every delegation a leadership experience that only Pure Michigan can offer. Thank you for your consideration in hosting the 2018 Regional Leadership conference. Sincerely, Kristine Allor President Residence Halls Association 34
