2 ECAASU 2011 Vision B.R.E.A.K. (Bridge, Revitalize, Equality, Action, Knowledge) Bridging the past and present by Revitalizing the APIA political movement to demonstrate Equality for all; Actions across color-lines, and sharing Knowledge to promote a collective community. Date: February 18-19, 2011 Location: University of Massachusetts Amherst At this year's ECAASU, we are trying to (re)build the Asian Pacific American Movement by creating a collective community. What does it mean to have a collective community? A collective community stems from a desire to create one whole community that promotes the well being of not just one group, but the well being of everyone. In order to have a collective community, it is important to bridge the gap and create a connection between the older and younger generation of activists, scholars, and artists. Through dialogue surrounding social justices issues, the younger generation will be encouraged to discover struggles for solidarity from the past Asian Pacific Islander Americans and the Third World Liberation Front Movement, Japanese Internment, Vincent Chin, LA Riots of 1992, Richard Aoki's legacy--to discover what it takes to fight for a community despite concrete color lines. This calls for attendees to rethink usable pasts and will force them to make a connection about what it means to be an American, in particular an Asian Pacific American. What was done in the past? What was our history? What does community mean? Does it mean your own community or the entire Asian Pacific American Community? What about other oppressed, underrepresented minority communities? In ECAASU UMass Amherst, we will create a safe space, where attendees can talk about their identity and how it relates to the community. Attendees will be encouraged to be honest and speak with their hearts, especially if they are talking about struggles within the APIA or allied communities--we want to understand why, analyze the problems in a local/national scale, and then come up with solutions/next steps to fight for equal representation. In order to build a strong, collective community, we must not be afraid to speak our minds. That will be one of many ways to encourage young activists and build communities in their hometown across color-lines through empowerment for a stronger sense of identity, and an urgency to improve their communities after attending ECAASU 2011 at UMass Amherst.

3 WHAT IS ECAASU? ECAASU (East Coast Asian-American Student Union) is an intercollegiate Asian-Pacific American advocacy organization. THE MISSION OF ECAASU IS TO: STRENGTHEN Asian American student organizations through intercollegiate communication to serve the educational and social needs of Asian American students ADVANCE the social equality of minorities by eliminating prejudice and discrimination, defending human and civil rights, and combating racism and hate crimes through activities permissible under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code ENCOURAGE Asian Americans to participate in the electoral process through nonpartisan voter education/registration and get out the vote drives that are not restricted to one election period and are executed in more than five states PROMOTE community-building and understanding among Asian Americans with different nationalities and people of color Ultimately, ECAASU strives to inspire, educate, and empower those interested in Asian American issues.

13 TRAVEL DIRECTIONS By Car Please note that if you are driving and chose to use GPS, the Visitor Center address is: 300 Massachusetts Ave, Amherst, MA If you are a first time visitor and traveling from the East or West on I-90 (Mass Pike), we do not recommend taking exit 8 off of the Mass Pike, rather follow the directions to exit 4 listed below. From the North From I-91 South, take exit 25 in Deerfield. At the end of the ramp, turn left and follow road to the intersection. Turn right onto Routes 5 & 10 South. Go 1 mile, then turn left onto Route 116 South. Follow 8 miles to the UMass exit. From the East From Route 2 West, take exit 16 (Belchertown/Amherst). Follow Route 202 for about 15 miles to blinking light at Route 9 and 116 Amherst exit (Pelham). Turn right and follow for 7 miles to Amherst center. Follow signs to UMass. From I-90 (Mass Pike), take exit 4 (West Springfield). Follow I-91 North to Exit 19. From the exit ramp, turn right onto Route 9. Travel approximately 4.5 miles to Route 116 North (turn left at traffic lights). UMass exit is 1 mile. From the South From I-91 North, take Exit 19 in Northampton.
