Instructor: Terry Kubista Thur, May p.m. $28 History: Minneapolis Teamsters Strike of 1934 The Minneapolis General Strike of 1934 grew out of a strike by Teamsters against most of the trucking companies operating in Minneapolis, a major distribution center for the Upper Midwest. The strike began on May 16, 1934 in the Market District, the modern day Minneapolis Warehouse District and ensuing violence lasted periodically throughout the summer. The strike paved the way for the organization of over-the-road drivers and the growth of the Teamsters labor union. It also was an important catalyst for the rise of industrial unionism in the 1930s, much of which was organized through the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, May 17 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5 British History: A Short History of Ireland We ll sum up the History of Ireland in just two hours with apologies to all involved. Instructor: Terry Kubista Thurs, June p.m. $7 History: Minnesota Iron Range The Minnesota Iron Range refers collectively or individually to a number of elongated iron-ore mining districts around Lake Superior, in the United States and Canada. Despite the word range, the iron ranges are not mountain chains, but outcrops of Precambrian sedimentary formations containing high percentages of iron. These cherty iron ore deposits are Precambrian in age for the Vermilion Range, while middle Precambrian in age for the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges. Natural ores and concentrates were produced from 1848 until the mid 1950s. Then taconites and jaspers were concentrated and pelletized and started to become the major source of iron production. Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, June 14 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5 History: The Black Death in Europe (The Plague) The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, analysis of DNA from victims in northern and southern Europe indicates that the pathogen responsible was the yesinia pestis bacterium. The plague created a series of religious, social and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history. Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, June 28 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5 History: French and Indian War The French and Indian War ( ) comprised the North American theater of the worldwide Seven Years War of The war pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France, with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries of Great Britain and France, as well as by Native American allies. Fighting took place primarily along the frontiers between New France and the British colonies, from Virginia in the south to Newfoundland in the north. The dispute erupted into violence during which Virginia militiamen under the command of 22-year-old George Washington ambushed a French patrol. 14 2017 SUMMER BROCHURE Page 60 History: Seven Years War The Seven Years War was a war fought between 1754 and The main conflict occurring in the seven-year period from 1756 to 1763 involved every European great power of the time except the Ottoman Empire, spanning five continents, and affecting Europe, the Americas, West Africa, India, and the Philippines. The conflict split Europe into two coalitions, led by the Kingdom of Great Britain on one side and the Kingdom of France on the other. For the first time, aiming to curtail Britain s and Prussia s ever-growing might, France formed a grand coalition of its own. This, however, ended in failure when the Anglo-Prussian coalition prevailed. Britain s rise as the world s predominant power destroyed France s supremacy in Europe, altering the European balance of power. Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, July 26 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5 British History: Filthy Old City of London The sanitation problems of a city the size of London today are immense but what were they like in London during the 14 th century? Combine the dense population of the city, no running water, the pollution of the river Thames and the diseases caused by human waste and you have some idea of the problems. How was the problem attacked and the city made safe for its inhabitants? Instructor: Terry Kubista Thurs, August p.m. $7 History: Washington at Valley Forge Valley Forge was the military camp 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia where the American Continental Army spent the winter of during the American Revolutionary War. Starvation, disease, malnutrition and exposure killed more than 2,500 American soldiers by the end of February General George Washington sought quarters for his men with winter almost setting in, and with greatly diminishing prospects for campaigning. Washington and his troops had fought in early December what was the last major engagement of He devised to pull his troops from their present encampment in the White Marsh area (now Fort Washington State Park) and move to a more secure location for the coming winter at Valley Forge. Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, August 30 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5 History: Immigration in America Immigration to the United States is a complex demographic phenomenon that has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of our history. The economic, social and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, jobs for nonimmigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime and voting behavior. In 2005, the United States per capita ranked 34 th out of 179 world nations in the number of immigrants allowed into the country. Instructor: Dan Hartman Wed, August 16 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. $5
