Parents should contact teachers if there are any questions or concerns. Calendar reminders. There will be NO CLASS on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19 for Presidents Day. Snow days. School closings are normally announced on the local media when bad weather hits. St. Charles is never mentioned separately, but as part of Columbus Catholic Schools. Attendance. Parents please note: Per our student handbook, page 20, parents are required to call our office before 9:00 a.m. if your son is going to be late or absent for any reason. If a student needs to leave early for an appointment, please call the office as early as possible to notify us so we can give your son a pass to leave. Students at no time can excuse their own absence or tardy. Class of Our freshman class for next year is filling up quickly. Parents are encouraged to call the main office at to schedule interviews to finalize the admission process. Cafeteria volunteers. The St. Charles Cafeteria is in need of adults/parents/grandparents to help serve lunch to students Monday through Friday. Shifts begin at 10:30 and typically end around :30. Please consider volunteering one day a month or serving as a substitute on an as needed basis. If interested, please indicate the day(s) you re available to help serve lunch and reply to: sccafeteriavolunteers@yahoo.com No experience or hairnets required! National Honor Society. NHS forms will be released to all qualified Sophomores and Juniors interested in becoming members of the National Honor Society this Wednesday, February 14. These verification forms must be returned to Mr. Miller, in the Library, by Wednesday, February 21. Personal interviews with the Faculty Council Committee begin after school the week of February 28 in the Guidance Office conference room. St. Charles Mothers Club. The next Mothers meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m.in the Cavello Center. Senior Parents. Please 3-4 pictures of your senior to Jodie Westin at scmomprom@gmail.com by Monday, April 2. These photos will be used for the Mother-Son Dance evening. Theater. The St. Charles Preparatory School Drama Department is proud to announce its winter production, The Odyssey adapted by Mary Zimmerman. The Odyssey will be presented Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 22, 23, & 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Charles Campus Theatre. Adult tickets are $10 each, and student tickets are $5 each. Reservations may be placed by calling the St. Charles main office at between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This dramatic adaptation of Homer s myth begins with a modern young woman who is struggling to understand Robert Fitzgerald s translation of The Odyssey. A classical muse appears, and the young woman becomes the goddess Athena a tireless advocate for Odysseus in his struggle to get home. With her trademark irreverent and witty twist on classic works, acclaimed playwright Mary Zimmerman brings to life the story of Odysseus s ten-year journey, depicting his encounters with characters such as Circe, the Cyclops, Poseidon, Calypso, the Sirens, and others. St. Charles Spring Musical Auditions. Men s & women s auditions for the American premiere of an exciting new musical, The Battle of Boat will be held Wednesday and Thursday, February 28 and March 1 at 4:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Campus Theater, 2010 East Broad St. (You need only attend one of the two days.) For the audition, please have a song prepared that shows off your voice. It need not be from the show. But it can be! An accompanist will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothing. Auditions are open to all area high school women in Central Ohio. Cast Size: Variable Rehearsals for The Battle of Boat will begin Monday, March 5 at 4:00 p.m. Production Dates: April If you would like additional information, please Doug Montgomery, at scdramadirector@aol.com The Battle of Boat is a courageous tale of a group of children trying to find their place in a world at war in Frustrated by their inability to join the soldiers in battle, the children decide to do whatever it takes to help in the war effort. However, they soon have to tackle their own conflict in the form of a local gang of bullies who will stop at nothing to see every plan they form fail. Heartwarming, funny, emotional and exciting, this original new musical is a true celebration of the steadfast British spirit that shone through during WW1. A cinematic musical from British duo Donnelly and Maltby with a sweeping, epic score and a timeless story of courage and hope.
2 Robotics. Scrap Metal - Do you or your company have scrap metal, particularly sheet aluminum or angle iron? The Robotics Team is in need of such items. If you have questions, please contact Joe Moyer at jmoyer@cdeducation.org. Summer Technology Camps - The Robotics Team will be holding a series of summer technology camps over the summer, including programming, design, and robotics sessions. Look for more details in the March and April home school bulletins. Nurse s office. The Ohio Department of Health added a meningitis vaccine requirement for all students entering their senior year of high school. Two doses of meningococcal MCV 4 vaccine must be administered prior to the start of school in the fall of If your son received the first dose on or after his 16th birthday, a second dose in not required. Please submit documentation that your son who will be a senior at St Charles for the academic year received the vaccination, by July 1, Contact the school nurse for any questions or concerns. More information is available at Thank you for encouraging your sons to take care of their health. Frequent handwashing, rest, and good nutrition help lessen infections and viruses. Daily showering and washing of gym clothes, towels and sports equipment decreases the incidence of skin irritations and infections. St Charles does routine cleaning of all classrooms and meeting areas. Hand sanitizer and wipes are available throughout the campus buildings. Our goal is for your son to stay healthy and in school. The annual blood drive will be Thursday, April 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the gym. All eligible students, parents, alumni, neighbors and friends of St. Charles are encouraged to help us in this lifesaving project. Every freshman is required to submit a current physical by the start of the school year. Physicals are then required yearly only if participating in sports. When submitting your son s freshman physical, please include a copy of their current immunization record. CAMPUS MINISTRY Women s Care Center Service Needs. The Kinder Women s Care Center, providing compassionate care for women in crisis pregnancies, has requested St. Charles volunteers to assist with sorting and storing donations. The center is located at located at 935 E. Broad St. Students may sign up in Religion Class or contact Mr. Warner for more information - mwarner@cdeducation.org St. John s/holy Rosary Community Kitchen. To continue our relationship from the Advent collections, St. Charles students will be serving meals on Saturdays, March 3 and 10 at the Community Kitchen - Sign up to volunteer by contacting Mr. Warner - mwarner@cdeducation.org 2018 MBK Black History & Culture Series - Featuring Aaron Diehl. This not-to-be missed performance by St. Charles graduate and world renowned Jazz Pianist, Aaron Diehl. Includes SC student piano and spoken word performances. February 27 6:00-8:00 p.m. at St. Charles Walter Student Commons Sponsored by My Brother s Keeper. Free Tickets available at CRS Rice Bowl - Lenten Collections. Throughout the Holy Season of Lent, we are reminded of the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and alms giving. This year, we will again partner with Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl to deepen each of these disciplines. Students (and through them their families) may contribute on Ash Wednesday and each Friday during Lent, beginning on February 23, as students pass through the lunch line. An account has been established whereby a student may specify the amount of his desired donation, and by way of finger swipe may easily transact the donation. Students and parents are again reminded to stay vigilant regarding the balance of lunch accounts. In addition, students will receive a Rice Bowl in their religion classrooms to take home - this will be collected after Lent. Lenten Resources. More than an exercise in donating money, our participation in the CRS Rice Bowl allows us to enter more deeply into solidarity with those who benefit from our sacrifices. What is Lent? You can begin your Lenten journey with these beautiful, insightful and challenging videos helping us understand the very basic question of What is Lent? Students and our community will have the opportunity to view one these following our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Curriculum Connections Each grade level s Religion Class will be following the below curriculum to raise our collective consciousness on the sufferings and needs so easily ignored from our position of safety and security. With videos, personal stories and Catholic Social Teaching integrated into each lesson, you may find this a helpful personal or family resource for entering into Lent. You may follow week by week at CRS Rice Bowl Curriculum Lenten Recipes There are few more worthy Lenten commitments within the busyness of daily demands than to recommit to the family meal time. With these delicious meatless meals you can connect with each other and with people in those regions of the world who will benefit from CRS Rice Bowl. 3 ATHLETICS Hockey. Back this Spring with the popular St. Charles hockey spirit wear sale running now until February. We offer quantity merchandise from Nike and Under Armour; including 1/4 zip pullovers, lightweight jackets, golf shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, jogger pants and more! Order through with access code. See the attached flyer for more details. Proceeds from the sale benefit the St Charles hockey program. Items will be available early April and distributed to the boys during lunch. If you are purchasing gifts, please contact Cheryl Carey at or to make alternative delivery arrangements. Baseball. It s time to start getting excited for the St. Charles Baseball Bash Auction and Reverse Raffle for a $2000 prize, Saturday, February 17, at Villa Milano. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 which includes Dinner and one Reverse Raffle Ticket. There will be a cash bar. Additional Reverse Raffle Tickets can be purchased for $20 each. You do not need to be present to win. The Soccer program will hold its annual Meet the Team Night on Monday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Walter Commons. This event provides an opportunity for all incoming freshmen who plan to try out for soccer (and their families) to meet the coaches, players, and families in the program. This will be a chance to receive all the pertinent information on upcoming summer events and the 2018 season, including captains practices, camps, weightlifting and conditioning, tryouts, and fundraising. Join us in officially kicking off our 2018 season and become a part of something great! Light refreshments and desserts will be provided. Saint Charles Volleyball will hold its Fat Tuesday Chipotle Fundraiser on Tuesday, February 13 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Please come support the Saint Charles Volleyball team as it raises funds for the spring season. The team receives 50% of purchases made at the Bexley Chipotle at 2484 East Main Street. Simply tell the cashier that you are there for the fundraiser before checking out. You do NOT need a flyer. Just tell the cashier before paying. The spring volleyball season is nearly here. All current students interested in playing this spring should talk to Coach Ned Gruber about upcoming open gym opportunities. Coach Gruber is available in room 403 before or after school. You can also contact him by phone at or by at ngruber@cdeducation.org. Practices begin on March 5. We have never cut a player from the program, so you do not need to feel any anxiety about trying a new sport. We want players with no volleyball experience. Tennis. There will be a player/parent meeting for all interested in tennis on Sunday, February 11, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cavello Center. Practices begin on March 5.
