2 From the Director's Desk One year ago I was siting in a doctor s office getting life changing news...i have breast cancer. I locked eyes with the doctor and didn t blink as she spoke of stage 2, been there for years, missed in previous mammograms, requiring surgery, maybe radiation and chemo. I couldn t look at my husband for fear of losing my composure or seeing the crushed look in his eyes. He told me later he suspected this news, but the eternal optimist in me was convinced all was normal. Normal has taken on a whole new meaning. Pretended it was a normal Friday as I drove my kids to sports and play dates. Pretended it was a normal Saturday as we drove 7 hours to Tennessee for my daughter s basketball tournament. Pretended it was a normal week as we cheered on our girl s accomplishments and celebrated victories with friends. But then we came home and the pretending stopped. We started fighting! Exactly two months after diagnosis I had a bilateral mastectomy. After four surgeries I am (hopefully) done with the reconstructive process. It was not an easy decision or recovery but I have no regrets. The focus now shifts from fighting cancer to ensuring it never returns. If this terrible diagnosis ever crosses my path again, I want to look back and say I did all I could to avoid it. I ve changed the way I eat, increased movement, decreased alcohol, lessened stress by saying goodbye to some toxic people and vowed to focus my time and energy on my overall wellness. Life s too short is my mantra. Too short for needless worry and stress. Too short to spend time with people who don t make me happy. Too short exerting energy on that 2 which does not bring me joy. I eat the good food, drink the good wine (in moderation), spend time with good people, and try to do good every day. I have been empowered in this fight with so many supporters. The Board of Directors at Mohler Center gave me all the recovery time I needed to come back strong. My administrative assistants covered the center s operations so I could focus on healing. Our wonderful volunteers pitched in to help keep things running smoothly in my absence. And many of the members told me stories of their own cancer fights, gave me hugs, cooked me food, and listened when I needed to talk. If anyone needs to beat cancer, the Mohler Center is the place to do it! As I look back over this past year, there are times I still can t believe I fought breast cancer. Other days I can think of nothing else. This is my new normal! Donate Now to Mohler Consignment Sale Starting in July, Mohler Center will accept donations of new and gently used clothing, handbags, shoes, jewelry or other items of interest. We will host monthly consignment sales in the Mohler lobby on the first Wednesday of each month as well as other pop up sales throughout each month. Items can be brought to the office during normal business hours. Proceeds from the consignment sale are used to fund the Festive Fun for Everyone party held in December. 3 Coming Events Monday, July 3 & Tuesday, July 4 Closed for Independence Day. Friday, July 21 Summer Movie and Munchies 11:00 AM. We will show Beauty and the Beast (2017) at Mohler Center. The free event requires reservations by Tuesday, July 18. Monday, July 24 Holiday Lunch with White Elephant Gift Exchange 12:00 PM. Come enjoy lunch with all the holiday favorites including baked ham, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, and dessert. Bring a wrapped gift (value less than $10) to participate in the gift exchange. This free event requires reservations by Thursday, July 20. Tuesday, July 25 Frozen Hot Chocolate and trivia in our lobby courtesy of Country Meadows of Hershey Drop in between 9:00 11:00 AM. Wednesday, July 26 Christmas Cookies in our lobby. Celebrate with friends and a few cookies. If you would like to bake cookies to donate, let us know. 6 Tax Wrap up 2017 Served a total of 1574 clients (12% increase from 2016) 90% of clients returned from last year $567,130 in total refunds processed Mohler Center took in over $8,000 in donations from the program Preparers and greeters logged over 1200 volunteer hours. The Mohler Center thanks the AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers for Preparers: Pricilla Bernola, Rick Elliott, Raquel Flake, Jerry Frola, Vera Greifer, Kay Gorse, Janette Murray, Leslie Nagle. Lynn Neely, Charlie Rice, Anne Shadis, Rich Spitler, John Sweeney, and Valjean West. Greeters: Al Kaplin, Pat Nester, Luann Taschek, Dotty Wychock, and Carol Yakstis Special thanks to Jerry Frola and Anne Shadis for giving their leadership and expertise to the AARP Tax-aide program. After 20 years, Jerry is stepping back from the tax program to enjoy a much deserved second retirement. Jerry has been a pleasure to work beside and had a huge part in making the AARP Tax-Aide program at Mohler Center a shining example in the state of PA! Mohler Travel War Paint on Broadway Wednesday, November 8 Back to Broadway for the hot new show, War Paint. Two-time Tony award winning legends Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole join forces to portray the trailblazing cosmetic icons who built empires in a business world ruled by men. War Paint tells the remarkable story of Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden fierce rivals who defined 20th century beauty. In creating an industry, they reinvented themselves and revolutionized how the world saw women. A Deluxe family style luncheon at world famous Carmines is included. Cost for the day is $265 and reservation including payment is needed by July 31. 6

7 Mohler Travel QVC and Kitchen Kettle Village Monday, September 11 We embark on a fun day, starting with a trip to QVC studios, seeing how products are sourced, tested and brought to life on air. We will tour the large facility, possibly watch a live broadcast and spend time in the studio store, where popular brands spotlighted on QVC are available for purchase. From there we head to Kitchen Kettle Village for a deluxe lunch at Kling House. After lunch we are treated to a tasting tour of Kitchen Kettle Village including jam, cheese, birch beer, wine and balsamic vinegar. We will enjoy free time shopping and exploring at our leisure at the over 40 specialty shops and hands on activities including buggy rides for an additional cost. This fun day departs at 7:30 AM and returns at 6:00PM. Cost is $110 and reservations are necessary by Friday, August 4. Divine Design Tuesday, October 24 Be inspired by the impressive works of Frank Lloyd Wright. Our first stop is the Flight 93 Memorial future site of the Crescent of Embrace, designed to be a lasting remembrance of the courage and heroism from the passengers and crew of Flight 93. We will then enjoy a luncheon at Oakhurst Tearoom. From there we enjoy the Fall Foliage on our way to Fallingwater, a FLW masterpiece. This home is dramatically cantilevered over a waterfall. Then off to the beauty of Kentucky Knob, a high end Usonian home designed by FLW in the last decade of his career. We will stop for dinner (at Hoss s) in Bedford on the way home. This trip departs Mohler Center at 6:00 AM and return home around 9:00 PM. Cost, which includes motor coach transportation, lunch, escort and taxes is $150. Reservations are necessary by September 22. 7

We provide a wide range of physical exercise opportunities, games, travel, educational courses, and social and volunteer opportunities in a pleasant, safe, and welcoming atmosphere. Our goal is to insure that older citizens can stay physically active, mentally stimulated, and independent for as long as possible. The Mohler Senior Center is an independent, non-profit agency, depending solely on private funding and endowments to operate. Although there is no formal dues structure, members are expected to contribute a donation of at least $75 per year.
