1 Alex P. Allain-Franklin Amelia Bayou Vista Berwick Centerville Patterson West End-Baldwin St. Mary Parish Library Newsletter stmarylibrary.org Shake, Rattle, & Roll into! It is time again for everyone, children through adults, to hang out with us for our 2018 Summer Reading Program. Research shows that children who participate in Summer Reading maintain their reading skills better than children who do not read in times that school is not in session. Summer Reading Programs have been proven to help preserve and strengthen reading skills, expand vocabulary, broaden word recognition, and help improve spelling. Join us for a program designed for different ages, with weekly activities that encourage reading in a fun, non-academic manner. Registration Registration began May 1st and will continue throughout the summer. Come and register at your local library if you haven't already. This will give you the opportunity to make sure you have an updated library card, pick up calendars, our newsletter, and flyers listing all of our upcoming events. Registration is allowed at only one branch, but you are welcome to attend all programs, activities, and special performers at ANY of the seven branches of the St. Mary Parish Library System. Kick-Off Day Our kick off day will be held on Monday, June 4 th from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Dance in and check out the stories, crafts, music, games, and other activities being held at the libraries located in Amelia, Baldwin, Bayou Vista, Berwick, Centerville, Franklin and Patterson. Rules Participants can only submit minutes that were read on their reading level. Adults or young adults who are reading to their children or younger siblings CANNOT count those minutes for themselves if they are participants in the Summer Reading Program. Participants will need to turn in at least the minimum of 600 minutes or more to complete the program. (That s just 15 minutes of reading a day.) This is the ONLY way to receive an invitation to our finale. For our finale, we will be hosting a pizza extravaganza featuring final awards, prizes, treats and games. No one can attend without an invitation. You will not want to miss the fun!
