We are pleased to announce that Marissa Argiero and Karmen Humble have joined the City Club Staff. Marissa is our new Dining Room Manager and Member Club Liaison. A native of Ann Arbor, Marissa has a degree in Hospitality Business from Michigan State University, and a great deal of experience acquired while working at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club Marissa Argiero (Egg Harbor, WI), and most recently at Meadowbrook Country Club. Karmen, who was promoted to the position of Office Manager, attended Washtenaw Community College and has developed a well-rounded knowledge base through her work at First of America Bank, the 14th District Court, Evangelical Homes of Michigan, and Linden Square Assisted Living. Professor Paul Mohai s teaching and research interests are focused on environmental justice, public opinion and the environment, and influences on environmental policy making. He is a founder of the Environmental Justice Program at U-M, and a major contributor to the growing body of quantitative research examining the impacts of disproportionate environmental burdens on low-income communities and communities of color. Professor Mohai is a past member of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He is currently a member of the Governor s Environmental Justice Work Group charged with developing an Environmental Justice Plan for Michigan. SPOTLIGHT ON SHEILA SIKKENGA Again, first things first. How do you pronounce Sheila Sikkenga s name? Sheila is easy, SHEELAH; Sikkenga a little more tricky. It s SICK -eng-ah.

4 SPOTLIGHT ON SHEILA SIKKENGA Again, first things first. How do you pronounce Sheila Sikkenga s name? Sheila is easy, SHEELAH; Sikkenga a little more tricky. It s SICK -eng-ah. There, you knew it all along. It is important to state that Sheila is not all fussy about her name s pronunciation. She says that she answers to anything beginning with s. Sheila s family is from Scotland. In 1939, when gas masks were being handed out, her parents decided to immigrate to Canada. They landed in Windsor. Sheila s mother was already pregnant when she left Scotland so Sheila says of herself that she was made in Scotland and born in Canada. Sheila s father joined the Canadian Navy until he was demobbed in He came from a background of tool and dye makers so he took a position as a teacher at the Ford Trade School. Henry Ford had established the school in 1916 at the Highland Park plant to teach young men to work with their hands. The school remained open until The family moved to Ann Arbor at this time to be nearer her father s job. Sheila attended local schools through high school. According to the immigration rules then in force, unlike her younger siblings who were both made and born here, Sheila had to achieve citizenship on her own. She was a high school student at the time. It was the time of the uprising in Hungary and Sheila was incredibly impressed by the numbers of Hungarians who desparately were studying for their citizenship exam because they were so eager to acquire it, many with a very slender grasp of the English language. Sheila attended the University of Michigan with a major in education. As luck would have it, Bill Sikkenga sat behind her in English 101. They dated during four years of college and married a week after graduation. Bill entered the Navy and so the family moved to San Diego. Sheila s first teaching position was the sixth grade which she loved. Actually, over the years Sheila had many different teaching jobs and loved them all. It s easy to imagine that the feeling was quite mutual. Unexpectedly and sadly, while Bill was on assignment in the Far East, Sheila s mother died at forty-nine. Sheila returned to Ann Arbor to help her father but it was a very difficult time for her. Bill got out of the Navy and the whole family returned to Ann Arbor so that Bill could attend the University of Michigan Law School. Sheila taught in South Lyon. The Sikkenga s first two children, both girls, were born. The family moved to Shelby, a small town north of Muskegon so that Bill could practice with his father. Here, their third and last child, a son, was born. Sheila happily taught sixth grade, until the kindergarten teacher became ill. It happened that this was the time that the Headstart Program was just getting off the ground and the school needed an experienced teacher. Whom to ask? Why, Sheila Sikkenga, of course. Sheila said that she especially enjoyed the challenge. It was time to move again, however. Bill took a job in the legal department of Ford Motor Company. Sheila decided it was time to move from the world of work to the world of volunteers. She says that she got involved with volunteering big time. Because she knew that open heart surgery was in her future, she began a strict swimming regimen at the Y. This led to her serving on the Y Board where she was secretary for seven years. It was a problematic time for the Y as the building had residents at the time and Board minutes needed to be especially accurate. She also volunteered with the AAUW where she ran the book sale twice(!!) and served as President. Sheila also served on the Board of Governors of the Michigan League and as its President. During her term, the Friends of the Michigan League was founded. When Bill took a one-year job setting up a law library for a steel company in Ohio, the whole family moved, lock, stock and barrel. When they returned at the end of the year, Bill gave Sheila a present to help her reintegrate back into Ann Arbor: a membership in the Ann Arbor Women s City Club as it was then called. While she was very grateful, Sheila really didn t have time to make full use of the Club. Two years ago Bill passed away and Sheila is most grateful that she has kept her membership and is getting involved in many more activities. She says that it is a wonderful new focus. There will be a 25 percent dues discount to new Gold and Silver members (those who have not been Ann Arbor City Club members during the past 12 months). When recruiting new members be sure and pass on this important information! Thank you. Connie D Amato President SEE WHAT YOU ARE MISSING? Ever wonder what the Signature Interest Groups do at their meetings? The Poetry Group had fun on February 1 by asking each member to provide a word. It had to be told on entering the room. We put the words up on an easel in the order in which people had arrived. After we ordered our dinner, we took about 20 minutes, interspersed, of course, with conversation and greetings, for each of us to write a poem that used those words. The only rule was that one had to use at least all but one of them. The words themselves showed the broad interests of the group. They were: mindfulness, angel, heart, panacea, mirror, and climb. After the time was up, we went around the table and read our new poems to one another. The results were surprisingly well crafted and appealing everything from a haiku to a love sonnet. Evening Book Discussion Group The Evening Book Discussion Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8. The selection for March is The Wrong Side of Goodbye, by Michael Connelly. The latest in a series, the book is a mystery-thriller featuring Detective Harry Bosch. Our group meets in the Pub for dinner and a lively discussion. SAUGATUCK TRIP MAY 31, 2018 The City Club Travel Group invites you to join us for a day-trip to the scenic town of Saugatuck, Michigan, on Thursday, May 31, This will be a full day but should prove to be a very enjoyable one. We will leave the Club at 8:00 a.m. by chartered bus and arrive in Saugatuck around 10:30 a.m. You will have a couple of hours to explore the shops and galleries and have lunch on your own before boarding the Star of Saugatuck at 12:45 for a cruise on the Kalamazoo River. Weather permitting, we may be go out onto Lake Michigan before turning around and heading back to port after our 90-minute cruise. You will then have some additional free time in Saugatuck before an early (5:00 p.m.) dinner at The Butler Restaurant (see menu choices below) on the river. We expect to leave Saugatuck around 7:00 p.m. and be back at the City Club by 9:30 p.m.. The cost for this day of fun and adventure is $125 for members and $135 for non-members.
