2 Page 2 ASCE President s Message By Marsia Geldert-Murphey On behalf of the St. Louis Section Executive Board, I extend our best wishes for a happy and prosperous On December 13th we held the Holiday Social at the Chase Park Plaza which by all accounts was a great success. I want to thank everyone that called and ed me after the event to offer such wonderful praise about the evening. In our newsletter this month we have information about the 2006 Structure s Congress which we will be hosting here in St. Louis, May 18 21, 2006 at the Adam s Mark. We are very proud to have this national event here in St. Louis. I want to thank our Structures and Seismic Engineering Committee for all their hard work in securing this event and the subsequent planning and coordination to organize such a large conference. This committee has been always been extremely ambitious; they have provided SE exam refresher courses and numerous continuing education courses to our members and community and of course pursued hosting the Structures Congress. Therefore, I am encouraging our members and community to support our committee s efforts so this conference highlights all that we are so proud of here in St. Louis. We have not had the opportunity to host a national conference here in over fifteen years, so we want to seize the opportunity to showcase St. Louis, our Section and our engineering community. We will need the support of our membership, our local engineering community, and our local business community to make this a success. If you would like more information about how you can help or sponsorship information please contact me at mgm@sciengineering.com. I look forward to serving you in Marsia Geldert-Murphey, P.E. 4 Page 4 ASCE 2006 Structures Congress St. Louis was selected as the place to host the 2006 Structures Congress, thanks to efforts of many dedicated members of the 2003 Structural/Seismic Committee who prepared a winning proposal, which was later presented it to ASCE National. These members are: Brad Cross, John Finke, Matt Westphal, John Harris, Stephanie Arbogast, Marc Bacchetti, Charlie Henke, Willie Noble, Ted Pruess, Brian Sides, Jim Taylor, Edward Wang, and Ron Williams. The 2006 Structures Congress will be one of the largest gatherings of structural/civil engineering professionals in St. Louis history. The last event of comparable size took place in St. Louis in 1988 when ASCE hosted the ASCE National Convention. Approximately 1,000 structural engineers will meet in St. Louis to discuss the latest developments in structural engineering and related fields. It is an extraordinary opportunity to showcase capabilities of our local engineering resources by taking advantage of national exposure. One of the most important issues which Congress Steering Committee is challenged with is to attract sponsors to help offset the cost of the conference. Engineers, contractors, and government managers are key atten- dees for this event. We believe that strong support from corporations and the engineering community is essential to the success of the Congress. This leadership can be demonstrated in several ways and at many financial levels. Many companies and professional organizations have already signed-up as sponsors to take advantage of this tremendous highprofile exposure for their company. Detailed information about the program is available at the Congress website at : s2006/. Please share information about this event with your employers, consultants, clients, business partners and encourage them to consider this opportunity. As of Dec. 27th the following organizations pledged their support for this important event: Jacobs Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas American Institute of Steel Construction National Fire Protection Association HNTB Fru-Con Engineering Inc. Portland Cement Association KPFF Consulting Engineers Burns & McDonnell International Code Council ABS Consulting David Mason & Associates Crawford Murphy & Tilly KCI Construction Company Geotechnology, Inc. Washington Engineering & Architecture, P.C. HDR Engineering, Inc Horner & Shifrin, Inc. ASCE St. Louis Section Structural Engineering Association of Kansas/Missouri A considerable support for the congress was also provided by the SIUE School of Engineering. The sponsorship campaign has been endorsed by the President of the Board of Public Service, Marjorie Melton, P.E. who wrote in their letter to local consulting firms this event is a unique opportunity for our region to attract the best and the brightest to St. Louis showcasing our city as the most appealing place in which to live and work. Message From Continuing Education Committee Since continuing education (CE) requirements were introduced by many states there has been a significant increase in number of courses offered by various organizations. It is important to keep in mind that an accurate record keeping is the responsibility of the licensee. Missouri Board of Professional Engineers requires that adequate records must be maintained for a minimum of four years for auditing purposes. Illinois Department of Professional Regulation requires record availability for a period of 6 years for licensed professional engineers and 5 years for licensed structural engineers. As a benefit to our members, ASCE Continuing Education Committee collects and maintains records of continuing education events sponsored or co-sponsored by the ASCE St. Louis Section. These records include: event announcements with date, location, topic, duration, speakers name and qualifications, and list of participants. The event records are provided by volunteer organizers. Members responsible for organizing qualified continuing education events should submit event records to Continuing Education Committee Chair - Jarek Czernikiewicz, PE - City of St. Louis Board of Public Service, City Hall Room 301, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, MO ; tel (314) or to: czernikiewiczj@stlouiscity.com Additional information is available from the following websites: Missouri Professional Engineers Illinois Professional Engineers admincode/068/ r.html Illinois Structural Engineers admincode/068/ r.html Important Register Information Make sure you keep your register information up-to-date by contacting the National ASCE at or call ASCE (2723)!!
